Oddly enough I buy most games I am interested in right away. Usually I preorder for the steelbook and such. I love steelbooks. (My Yakuza and Thief steelbooks among my favorites) They can be hard to find after release or they are jacked up in price.
I mostly play for a couple hours or less and shelf it for later. Then I know what frame of mind I need to be in to appreciate it the most. It doesn't make a lot of sense admittedly but that is what I do.
Thought I was the only one with a secret steelbook fetish. Love my Persona 5 one the bestest.

I have no idea what a "steelbook" even is.
You crazy kidz....
Ha, I'm not familiar with the term either, but since it was blueturtle who said it, I assume that's another term for the art books you can get as a bonus for collector's editions, etc.
'cause I need my fix... more seriously, it depends on the game.
Games like RE2, God of War, Ace Combat 7, Persona 5, etc. (i.e. series that I'm a fan of) I'll get on week 1 if the initial player impressions are good (a demo also helps).
Games like F76 and Anthem (i.e. lots of hype but barely any real info), or just anything by EA, Activision, Ubisoft, etc. I've learnt not to touch until at least the full release reviews come out from trusted sources (even a demo doesn't help as these companies simply can not be trusted).
Edit: FYI a 'steelbook' is simply a metal case (as opposed to a plastic one), usually with unique artwork on it.
Wanting to be able to say I have played from launch.
Everyone says that anyway
I played my first Crysis game about two years ago. I was on a classic RPG kick. To be honest, it didn't impress me at all even for a 2008 game.
It was an on-rails game, the AI and graphics were awful even for 2008. I researched the sequels Crysis 2 and what came after. Seems the sequels are where they did major graphic overhauls and they got awful player reviews as short and shallow games.... Never looked back.
Sure I'm expecting to get backlash from Crysis fans. But this franchise is best left to the original players of it's time and its nostalgia..... I'm confidant it would "suck" for any one trying them out for the first time.
This is coming from a classic fan. I've found fun and a lot of enjoyment is much older games
Take advantage of all the xp/credits/loot bugs you found in beta before they fix them and miss out.
Wtf.
Isnt it the point of the beta to REPORT ALL BUGS ?!?!?!?!?!?
Yeesh.
If I was a mod, I would ban a player who pulled such a thing.
I suspect his reply was an attempt at humor, however there are definitely players who do exactly what he said, keep quiet on any exploitable bugs in order to take advantage at launch.
Often times these bugs are actually reported during beta, as was the case in FO76 but the devs go and launch anyways with the reported bugs still in place.
When players then take advantage I have to lay more blame on the devs and their greed instead of the players.
Better yet, in FO76 they recently released a patch which reintroduced many previously fixed bugs including an infamous item duping issue. Might as well hand the criminals the keys to the kingdom.

Because I'm starved for games I WANT to play. There are lots of games out there I could play, but few I want to commit time and effort to. So when I see something that looks vaguely like something I want, I hop on to that bandwagon.
I'm easily swept away by hype, something Fallout 76 reminded me (Painfully) to stop doing. So far, I've survived Anthem hype without putting money in for it yet and I hope my new behaviour continues.
-Stay away from graphically intense games... They’re ALWAYS shallow.
Crysis wasn't shallow. Only one I can think of, lol

To each their own. Crysis did a lot of things most shooters were not at the time, but most do now, like flexible abilities besides bullets and grenades and had max graphics capability. I was just pointing out max graphics arent an automatic red flag for many players. The rest of your original post was pretty spot on.

Yeah me too and I checked out some videos on youtube.
Complaining about bugs is complaining just for the sake of complaining.
...bugs are a non-factor in online environment.
Curious position which many don't seem to share.
I was one such but then I played FO76 at launch and either because I love Fallout I've come to better understand your point, the bugs weren't nearly as aggravating nor deterred me from enjoying it.
Weird
I waited on the game purely on two reasons:
Like someone already mentioned, I have a roaster of games to finish before buying new ones else I'll keep piling on and never playing them.
I read how it's pretty much fallout 4 changed a bit to turn into a survival game.
I'm currently playing fallout 4, and I experienced a couple of bugs and two game breaking bugs I managed to fix: 1) Couldn't see my pipboy menu no matter what I tried so couldn't do shit 2) Couldn't do half my actions because I was apparently stuck into a bugged power armour
I had to use cheat commands to unequip everything even my pipboy to fix these issues or reroll my savefile.
Anyway, a bug I'm currently hating is when I leave the game running while I go afk for a couple minutes and my computer either goes to sleep mode or the monitor screen goes black. It takes forever to load the whole system when this happens, and I've been exiting the game whenever I'm going to go away for long enough time. I did some research and apparently this happens for FO76 as well which confirmed by notion on waiting for the game to get in a better state.
No, I do not. I bought Anarchy Online when it first came out and instantly regretted it! Funcom blatantly lied about the system requirements needed to run AO and, as a result, 10's of thousands of players got burned. We had a choice: either upgrade our boxes, to some unknown level of acceptability, or eat the cost of the game. I wished that I had just eaten the cost of the game...but, I didn't. Instead, I decided to upgrade my computer...long story short: it took me 2 weeks and over $400 dollars to meet the actual computing requirements of the game. But again, I found myself regretting my decision. When I finally I got into the game it crashed within the first 5 minutes...and It crashed another 20+ times that day. Funcom knowingly and deliberately released an unplayable piece of garbage...and it took them months to get the game to a playable state.
I tend to buy somewhere between 20-30 games per year and I buy 1-3 games at launch. Its often a RPG that takes 20+ hours to complete and there was something in the gameplay footage that really made me want to play it immediately. I also found it on a 25% prepurchase sale on sites like GMG.
I can't remember the last time I paid full price for a game at launch since a 25% sale is only 3-6 months away and I often have something next in line to play.
Edit: I will probably end up buying Sekiro: Shadow die twice right at launch. Its a game that I really really want to play.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.
Take advantage of all the xp/credits/loot bugs you found in beta before they fix them and miss out.
Wtf.
Isnt it the point of the beta to REPORT ALL BUGS ?!?!?!?!?!?
I reported every bug I found.
Back when Ultima Online released (isometric, tile based game) the developers had failed to lock down every single tile in the game. Because of this some players were able to find rare tiles and pick them up and place them in their own homes. Eventually, those tiles were locked down by the developers and only a very few players had these rare items.
Likewise, there are always balance issues at first or mob spawn issues. In the game I'm playing now we had literally weeks where the mobs weren't attacking so I could mine/farm with impunity. I took full advantage of that bug and made myself rich.
I also have some in game assets future players will never have. As the developers changed the game they 'grandfathered' in some things that were permissible at one time but are no longer allowed.
That's why I put up with all the early access nonsense.
How about PAID early access, as is done now? I'm all for testing (preferably by professional testers), but charging for the privilege is too close to Tom Sawyer's white picket fence that needed painting

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

I found this on the Steelbook page, but still I'm thinking, people still buy and collect Blueray movies and games and their boxes, why?
For the terrific artwork, which I'm sure sits on a shelf stacked with others side by side, so it cant even be seen. Maybe people mount them in frames on their walls?

I have to move to another country and I am considering throwing away my collection of books and that already depresses me in spite of the fact that I have long since moved on to ebooks and audiobooks. Still the collector in me is huddled in a corner wailing contemplating the loss of years of going to various bookshops and riffling through the pages while inhaling the new book aroma.
As a nomad of sorts I have to keep moving because of my husband's job. This might be the first time we will find ourselves having to pay for the move ourselves (before the company always did) and finding we have no room in the new place. Depressing thought and I have stopped collecting things and steelbooks looks like a heartache waiting to happen.

Because at launch, everything is new for everyone. There is real rush to learn and explore uncharted waters. And also there is greatest convergence of players at starting areas. And everyone is setting on the trip together.
That being said
In today day and age, with all the scams, failed launches, abandoned games. Playing games at launch is madness.
