As always it must be pointed out that you have some kind of deeply rooted emotional dysfunction that has manifested into an obsession with SoE that you should really be seeking professional help for.
There are "some" underpopulated servers. The reason why people don't see the under population is because they either are on one of the more heavily populated servers, play with a "static" group of friends, or leveled to 50 with the player wave they started with and are now raiding to their hearts content.
Currently, they have their servers setup for more of a WOW player base, 800,000 to 1mill. And they currently have a 400,000 or so player load. So, I think they should look at the servers and genrally poll the population to see if they wouldn't mind the idea of a server merger with another extremely under populated server.

I think thats the fairest statement I have seen yet on it. And I beleive I fit into your static group category.

Personally, if a server merger was what people wanted I could care less about the "bad press" it would cause. No magazine is going to decide for me which game I like. A good communtiy is a happy community so if it needs to be done, do it. I would say wait until after DoF drops though.

DoF looks like it will bring a big revamp to the game.
I see people running around oasis everytime.Of course there is no mass crowd in one area because there is no such incentive for it like say the AH in WoW.
Did SoE expect to have 1million plus subs?Maybe it did but if anyone read my post back in october 2004 i stated like a few reasons which had nothing to even do with the game content ot gameplay that would ensure it never hit past 500k mark at best.
Here are a few-it has a high system requirement. As of oct 2004 less then 10% of the market owned a R9800pro/FX5900 or higher.Add to fact some may own this cards or higher and not own 1gb RAM.
-No pvp. This narrows out the pvp crowd.
-group oriented game.Narrows out solo players
-unknown outside mmorpg circles. So very few newcomers to genre will pick it up.
So I think when u make a game for such a select crowd you should not expect more then 500k .If SoE failed to see this then i find that funny.
But i see mmorpg games with under 100k hanging around for years(so i guess they are making a profit). So even if we want to be as skeptical as possible i seriously doubt EQ2 is below the 200k even.
I like EQ2 idea but not how it was implemented. I dont have much time explaining everything I like or dont like about EQ2 so Ill just say that when I play EQ2, i have a feeling as If im moving through a swamp. EQ2 is much more casual friendly but its still primarily a group-oriented game - thats the major flaw in my eyes. I dont think EQ2 will die anytime soon (or ever) but it wont hit the roof like WoW did because in todays busy business world, not everyone can afford to invest a lot of time into grouping.
But seeing what happend after EQ, seeing how games are more and more casual friendly im positive new and old games will turn into casual direction - thats where money are.
I wish EQ2 was easier to manage, was more casual friendly and wasnt so "artificial". I love it in general, but those tiny little things kill the joy for me. I will wait untill they revamp EQ2 or untill they include WoW into all access plan ( ) - then id play all my fav games - EQ2, WoW and PS..
PS: Mr Sony and Mr Bliz, PLZ make a deal to include WoW into all access station pass! Because if u dont... well, you dont want my uber stick of the drunken monkey clown shoved into your *censored*... EH?? eh??? .. or do you???
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

Sorry, but swiftflow is right on the money. I personally am very amused by EQ2's lackluster performance because they had it coming.
As more and more expansions were released for EQ, it became less of a quality game and more about purely milking the product for money. SoE knew they were about to have major competition. They made 2 big mistakes IMO. First, the quality of the expansions in EQ went straight down the toilet, starting with Shadows of Luclin and especially Gates of Discord which was a complete failure. This only served to drive players to other games.
Second, they milked EQ and put the money into developing EQ2. They had a good opportunity here with EQ2, but they screwed it up. They released the game way before it was ready and what they ended up with was a game that SHOULD have done better or at least as good as EQ but ended up falling way short of expected success. I'm glad about that because it sends a message to other companies developing MMO's - Polish up your game before you release it to the public.
I do not play Everquest II, but I did play Everquest I. From what I can tell Everquest does not exactly have it's priorities straight they can do what they want, but they need to be a little more giving. If they are doing anything like Everquest I they will make small expansions that get costly once you have to buy so many to get the latest parts of the game unlocked. Maybe they should just patch up their game for free to keep more members.
I do not want to sound like I'm dissing because I have not played the game so I can not judge. But, if people are getting free expansions through patches then it will keep them coming back for more. I do play WoW and have not bought one expansion pack yet.. They have added a whole PvP battleground system alterd classes entirely to make them better added several new areas in the world along with an epic dungeon. Next patch the Hunter class survival talents will be redone, along with druid feral combat damage increase, two new areas added along with another new epic dungeon for search of "uber" items. This is part of what keep's me interested maybe this could help Everquest II? Not trying to offend or diss~ anyone just putting ideas out there.
Hang in there Everquest II fans they will pull it off somehow any good gaming company is good for saving a good game on a trip with bad luck.
Aildrik, how was the game released before it was ready? It had a pretty clean launch. In fact, it was definitley more clean that many other MMO's launches. If you're going to make a statement like that at least explain what you mean. Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean it was released too soon.
