played all 3 alphas. huge fan of t1 and t2 but this one just isn't grabbing me. as it stands, and i know it's alpha--without an NDA -- it's just not that fun. Sorting which armor to use. Running off into the wilds just to find someone ahead of you has already killed everything... the pacing seems slow. it's hard to pinpoint what it is, it's just missing something. music is great.
p.s. as a person that hates to hear other people chewing that alpaca drives me nuts!
Honestly it sounds like you didn't even play the game either. Fire armor is best because that's what the goblins do to you, Weapon damage is up to you... but by no means are you running around and other players are taking up the recourses or killing mobs.... straight up lie lol. I have about 40 hours in the current alpha alone and I'm here to tell you that's bull. Pacing is not "slow" because its not a Path of Exile or Diablo 3 spam-fest of random numbers and lights. You need to dodge here and get out of the way, fight strategically and out-smart the mobs in many cases. Use your cool-down attacks properly and time it right with it's energy release. Again I do not believe for a second you actually played the game either. GG
Guessing you never played on a level with 3 dusk mages running in the same area as you spamming unholy bolt. Had one quest to kill 8 elite goblin mobs in an earlier zone, took me sitting through 5 day/night cycles to get it as a forge because the dust mages where killing things as fast as they popped up. Not a problem when you don't have others competing for those mobs now that everyone has move on to the higher level areas though.
The game is slow for myself and others it seems, just because you don't think so doesn't make it so. When you have multiple people all saying the same thing then the one saying the other is usually the one that isn't correct or on the same page with everyone else. It has nothing to do with comparing the game to any other game either. It just feels like you are moving slower than you should. The pacing for gaining levels is on point right now, that isn't an issue. The rate of killing is on point for the most part, it is the movement that feels slow, at least to me.
Hell sitting back and watching harvesting is about as fun as watching paint dry. I don't know about you but I have been running over areas every time I enter for all the harvesting nodes because I want to make another relic other than the sword which doesn't really fit with the dusk mage or at least the way I choose to play. I have probably collected over a 1000+ nodes at this point and it is boring as hell, just sitting there waiting for it to finish. They should cut that animation time in half.
Don't get me wrong I am enjoying the game myself. There are things that if they don't change might come back to bite them in the end. They have been doing a great job of listening, but things like people feeling like the game is slow will not help them in the end. They did a great job changing the way you level by adding levels and removing the grind where you had to choose whether or not to take the skill or gear upgrades. Now hopefully they will listen about the speed or the feel of the game.
Also I haven't had to worry about dodging anything other than boss mobs or when running a phase level with the bombard. Most of the trash mobs go down in one hit normally now that I have made a dusk mage for this round of testing. I also don't try to go running thru entire packs I kill them as they come to me.
Sad to hear this. Especially the fact that MMO side actually ruined the game. ( something I expected to be best feature ) I had high expectations for this one. But it seems that Wolcen is still best upcoming. And POE is still king...
Also PW is greedy company. They push well hidden, but aggressive monetisation. That kicks in late game. And can cost huge amounts, if you fall for paying.
If you are waiting for Wolcen be prepared to wait another 20 years. They can't stop remaking the entire game long enough to release the game.
Sadly. Because the gameplay is probably on side of best. Wish they would just manage to release it
I backed this game in kickstarter and I tried it in Alpha or early Beta (cannot remember) and it seemed awful. I am not even sure I will bother with it after release. Maybe on rainy days with nothing else, or if I watch some streams and videos and it is way better than what I remember.
I often ask myself that these days that about multiplayer games with no PvP. Maybe if I were active on Twitter and Instagram I'd get it. But I'm not, so I don't
Maybe because people enjoy playing with their friends? Why was Torchlight 2 even made? Oh that's right, the massive out-cry from the community for online co-op... that's right. Again, uneducated like the rest of the idiots on here. Keep proving yourselves stupid.
There's a big difference between wanting to play with friends some of the time and NEEDING to play with friends or not at all. One is fun. The other one is a modern disease.
I'm guessing you tweet a lot too.

I loved Torchlight 1, Torchlight 2, and because of the good standing they have built with those I'll have no problem with diving into Torchlight Frontiers.
With that said, some of you guys are such pom pom waving weenies that you gotta name call people who may not be in love with the concept or how it plays. Unless you're a board member at Perfect World or some intern whose boss is over your shoulder... chill TF out.
Whatever quirks TL:Frontiers has they'll sort it eventually. I have no problems with the game having an open world until I have a problem with it (launch time).
You weirdos act like you weren't the same ones who did the whole "DON'T TOUCH MY MOBS" or cried when guilds camped and farmed world bosses in your revisionist history favorite MMORPGs. Cut it out.
"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"
Okay, so monetization comes up a lot in the comments - the monetization is up to the developers and not to Perfect World. They said that they are going to sell limited progression boosts, cosmetics for characters, forts and pets and Relic Weapons which are time-limited activation skills that give you alternative attack modes to your primary weapon and can be obtained in-game though a system that is similar to how you obtain weapons and frames in Warframe. They said they are not selling zones or character classes.
As far as the gameplay goes - it is fun. The running speed is a bit low as mentioned before but the progression and combat speed are pretty good. The loot is a bit basic at the moment but not all affixes have been added to the game and legendary items are currently placeholders - they just have higher stats than normal items but are missing the special powers that are making them unique and build-defining. Currently the characters are also missing a lot of skills which obviously limits the build variety.
The MMO aspect seems to be pretty understated IMO. You are never in a zone with lots of other players and the mobs spawn pretty regularly so other players stealing quest objectives is not really an issue in my experience.
The frontiers - in my experience legendary items from one frontier work pretty well as starting items in another but it is recommended to get items that are from the frontier you are playing. The stats go down but overall the rate at which you change your equipment is the same one as starting a new act in other games. Your skills do carry over and a lot of the actual power of your character comes from passive skills. Still what the system allows is to choose which area to start with and move to another one at your leisure. In the future when new content is regularly released a new player can jump directly into the latest content where a lot of the player population is without missing out on old content which can be played at a good challenge level later on. One thing I wish they would throw out is frontier bonding for relic weapons because the relic weapons are a part of your skills build and not really an item.
There are a couple people in this thread who thought Devilian and Guardians of Ember were good ARPG games. I'd like those same people to explain why they thought those two finished games were good and this one that isn't even the final product isn't.
@Hariken - I have no problem with that. STO is still around after 9 years. I hope this game sticks around as long as that BAMN.
@Torval - "So why did it need to be an MMO? Why couldn't small group multiplayer work. Something like Diablo 3 that is easy drop in drop out? What does fighting others for grind space add to the game? How does MMO make it better?" - Cause the way you object to has not been available in any online multiplayer ARPG game since MH. There are players who don't want to bother with socializing to do activities and this mode caters to those people who want a multiplayer experience.
Nothing - also every ARPG-mmo hybrid with huge open shared world has failed big time in the west.
Lost Ark might change that. I've tried it and I was pretty impressed.
Your point still stands though, Lost Ark would have been the same if it wasn't an MMO.
Same here played it and sadly the whole endgame of running all over the world for encounters - it leaves a lot to be desired.
Lost Ark to me is worth one playthrough to see the content and then the endgame simply falls flat.
I would have much preferred to have character/gear depth theorycrafting like PoE and Grim Dawn.
The biggest problem is that Lost Ark is a mmo first (same pitfalls of liner progression and limited character builds and gear) and ARPG second.
I didn't have much experience with the endgame, other than jumping on someone else's max level character for a bit. It seemed typical MMO stuff though. There was 15 endgame dungeons to progress through, vertically. Some were just higher level versions of the levelling dungeons though.. but some events and mechanics were slightly different within them. There's lots of PvP options and then the world stuff you mentioned. Seemed better than all the other isometric-MMORPG style games.
The endgame content is not lacking, at least.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
MMOs are dumbed down. GoE had some interesting points, but overall was very mediocre compared to its ARPG peers. It fits well with a ton of other mediocre MMOs but it really failed as an ARPG. The loot chase was boring and MMO-like. The mob behavior and character building were MMO like (boring rehashes of existing systems). It tried to shoehorn MMO and ARPG together with a very bland result overall, plus it had some idiotic systems like 'housing' and 'crafting' tagged on that were just clunky. It ultimately failed to be a good MMO or a good ARPG.
Diablo 3 has great seamless multiplayer, just as an example. A friend can drop in and leave without screwing up my game save or theirs. The game scales multiplayer difficulty dynamically to good effect. I can game with friends or strangers and the multiplayer doesn't get in the way of the ARPG design or gameplay. MMOs inherently get in the way of any genre they're tied to and mixed with... MMORPGs, MMOARPGs, MMOFPS, etc blah blah. The MMO part of a game demands certain concessions for that massively multiplayer component. At one point the idea of playing with a ton of other people was worth it for that reason alone. Now it's not.
What is the MMO part going to add to the game other than dumbing down the good ARPG points to make the massively multiplayer part work? The very worst part of PoE is the MMO part and how monetization affects design. People into whale-driven gaming will probably scratch their collective heads at this criticism. Those who aren't I think likely know exactly what I mean.
If by "dumbing down" you mean a system in which you cannot simply create a build that plays the game for you....then good riddance.

Level WITH 3....not Level 3.
