The Rift site has been updated with a note from the Gamigo team to announce to the community that Rift Prime will be closing down on March 31st. No explanation is given for the closure. You may remember that Rift Prime is, or was, a progression server that started with "vanilla" and would gradually unlock content over time. Character transfers will be completed by April 7th.

What happened? They were popular at launch.

I decided not to give this a shot due to no openworld pvp or conquest. Even though I didn't see any of what happened to Trion coming I'm glad I didn't waste tons of time into this like I would have.

Keep that in mind the next time a shoddy F2P game offers a subscription server. They do not respect you and will not hesitate to go back on the product they offered you and transfer your characters to regular servers.

(Not that subscription fees ever protected you from cash shops anyway.)

I fear that AO's new progression server will see the same fate. Sad for the community that was built on the Rift Prime server, though. =(

The difference is, Funcom isn't known to just randomly shut things down, and they are the original devs. Also AO seems to have a decent community on the new server. I have no idea what is going on but I'm having fun on it. Gamigo bought Trion, probably saw that the population was low on the server, and didn't want to put effort into setting up the expansion releases.

I see this as just part and parcel of attempting to put Rift on a "sound" financial footing.

Gamigo bought Rift et al. in a "bankruptcy" sale - see the original thread. Rift was bleeding money. Laying off a lot (most) of the devs will have greatly reduced the costs. Closing low population server will - presumably - save them a bit more.

The question going forward is are there enough people playing to keep it opened?

Closing this server suggests its tough. The "hope" however is that based on what they said shortly after the take-over they obviously believe there are (or at least were) enough. Otherwise they would have simply got rid of everyone / closed it on day 1 / not bothered to buy the company in the first place.

Well they only bought the company at the end of October - so just over 4 months ago. I would guess that - having gotten the change over stuff out of the way they wanted to see whether existing players stuck around or maybe moved to new games purchased over the Christmas period and then make an assessment.

Didn't they say when they started this server that it would be shut down eventually? Meaning it was never intended to run "forever"?

Yeah, here https://www.trionworlds.com/rift/en/2018/02/21/rift-prime-launch-march-7-2018/ the announcement where it says an undetermined life span.

So yeah no surprise at all...because they said they were going to...yeah.

This is what happens when you release a really crappy version of your original game and expect people to be ok with it. Add to the fact Gamigo cant make it P2W to milk fools.

Lack of open world pvp sucked but honestly the arena pvp was pretty decent at launch.

There wasn't anything wrong with the prime server. The vanilla experience is just a phase that people go through to try and recapture the magic of the first MMO they played... they eventually leave. That's all that's happened here.

Problem is though, they don't realise how it makes the game look in general. They think "Hey, this will save us money." but now everyone thinks Rift is going to go bye bye at any time and it will be losing players like crazy. Which.. could cause it to go bye bye.

Same with the GW2 layoffs. They think it will save them money but they probably already know they've just lost a hell of a lot of players because of it and are gaining far few newer ones.

    Self destructive.

They all do because gamers are completely blind. They THINK the old days were the good ol days because it was simply a new experience, one which you can never relive. The idea lone is dumb anyhow...let's start over so i can get what i already have...ummm yeah sounds brilliant.

The game had the exact same problems as most of the rest, too linear/gaited and the very few ideas outside of the normal design we see in every rpg were not done very well.Rifts were below average fun, cool for a day or 3 then zzzzzzzzzzz.Invasions were utter garbage,no effort put into them at all.

So for myself after seeing the VERY lazy start to the game where we are dropped into this ugly small no effort hangar, then the lazy work on Rifts and Invasions,it became very apparent, this was simply a lazy attempt to cash in on the then mmorpg crave. Now a days the crave is BR so we have not seen many of these rpgs at this time.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Rift concepts have some nice ideas, I like the random world event but that is it. The big problems in this game for me is character models/customization which are lacking like a game made in the 1999.

The worst problem for any F2P player's are lacking inventory space which will SLOW any game progression by 2 years just needing to sell every 5-10 mins, boy thats sound like fun. So there solution is to encourage or rather more like FORCING me to spend money in Cash Shop. Why would I support that kind crappy idea and cave in. For every MMO out that are limited bag space/char slots in a loot game is as dumb as selling cars without wheels, I'm sure it will sell like hot cakes. AS I had said before, even gamer need a return on time investment in "playing video games."

Another problem in Rift are the skills which are locked by level which mean you need to get to end game fast in-order to test out your build, however, is hinder its progression by limited bag space, and thus made Rift as SLOW in every way possible almost on par with SWTOR level. SO which I conclude RIFT is for RICH ppl only and not so much as Free 2 Play, a real Rift faker lol.

In short Rift is not new start friendly nor anything in this game make it anymore compelling over others, especial GW2 can easy replace this game in regards to game design. Even in GW2 char models are low in poly and NEED a overhaul badly to keep the game feeling impressive in the long run. I can express how important a look of a char in all MMO can make or break your game. Looking cool/what have you is one key to why most ppl even play games, second thing is THE LOOT!!!

OH yeah those bastards game companies knows it, so only Cosmetics are ok in the CASH SHOP which IS NOT OK with me >_> not if you don't want to look like a clone. Black Desert Online is the finest and the most evil tac of all by selling a costume for $30 while the in game gears are designed to look like crap at lvl 10 and still crap at 60. Anyway, no character customization and or loot is a death of video game.

I disagree with the negative comments, Rift was the best dynamic and pug group mmorpg out. Its flaw was its needs to be busy to be fun and you had to ride the wave of players after release.

In fact you can see this happening on all vanilla WoW private servers: the first 6 months are a honeymoon then everyone is already looking forward to the next "new" server.
I guess that what draws the people in is the leveling process and the first part of the gearing-up which is best experienced when a server has just launched. For WoW it's also the fairer pvp which dies down when new max level characters have to compete with AQ-geared opponents, is PVP a thing in RIFT?

Sad. This game is such wasted potential. Met my wife on here too.
The end of rift is nigh. Also, any one who says they didnt play because it doesnt have open world forced pvp is trash
