Weren't the updates kind of meh for a while before the massive layoffs...?
Same standard they always were
No idea. The only thing I'd see this site report on in regards to this game in ways of updates is just additions to the living story. Outside of that, I have no idea what kind of content was added to the game since the release of the last expansion outside of more mount skins. I highly doubt a new expansion is coming this year since they were putting them out every 2 years. Oh well.
The living story permanently adds new story chapters, features, raids and new zones. It's not just some kind of the temporary event. They added new legendaries, armor sets, weapons and new mounts too. Adding a new mount is a big deal considering how they work. I'm not sure if you've played PoF yet but you'd know that a new mount is not just a new 'skin' if you had.
They've probably added at least another expansion's worth of content through the living story since the Path of Fire launch.
Living story has not added an expansions worth of content im sorry. It's added one raid wing per (which is very low considering the raids aren't near as complex as even a normal difficulty wow raid.) one mastery track which is near useless outside that area save for one perk. And 20 cash shop items.
That's quite an exercise in omission you just demonstrated.
Never mind the 28 story quests, 5 new zones, countless additions, tons of new enemy types and countless new items.
I guess they don't count towards what you think is content. Just raids and mastery tracks...
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
GW2 is a game that went out its way to insure that pvp was completely meaningless, and it is now firmly in the pvp era trying to survive.
Good luck.
PvP is still largely not enjoyed by a majority of MMO players, especially PvE'rs. Too many memories of griefers intentionally trying to make non-PvP'rs enjoyment crappy. You could argue that Fortnite, PUBG, and MOBAs prove that wrong, but I'd argue that those aren't MMOs in the way many hub-based and persistent MMOs are. Last I checked the most popular, highest rated MMOs are still PvE-first.
I also don't understand why layoffs to players == dying game. GW2 made $70 million in 2018 and about the same before. It's less than NCSoft's mobile, but nothing to sniff at. Layoffs in business happen all the time, many times because projects are cancelled or jobs are replaced with automation (which also tends to create new jobs). We see the Blizzard and ANet layoffs as bad, but Union Pacific (a non-tech focused company) is getting ready to layoff 20k people. It sucks, it's sad, and sometimes I can't contain my anger when a layoff looks to be unnecessary (I'm looking at YOU Activision/Blizzard). But I haven't worked in a job where some sort of layoff hasn't happened.... most of the time due to a change in business focus.

Name another AAA true MMORPG with better and more populated PvP? Now name one with better WvW/RvR? WoW couldn't do it. ESO tried to copy it and failed. SWToR had to take their mass PvP offline a couple weeks into the release.
People can complain till the day is long about WvW or sPvP in GW2 but it is still better than pretty much any other MMO out there.

Better pvp easy. Wow, ff14, tibia, Eso. More popular? Probably just eso, wow, and linage 1. (As for the eso tried and failed, cyrodil is way more populated and complex than gw2 wvw on any of the maps.)
Also Arena Shill has already released 5 gem skins for the new mount.

Oh wow 28 new linear quest with a plot more predicable than a fetch quest and characters that have the personality of either satin or sand paper. As for zones they wont be worht going to except to farm for the ascended item and the one useful mastery skill.

If you don't like GW2, then fair enough.. but lets not pretend a lot of content hasn't been added.

As deep as these lay off were I think NCsoft is putting Anet in a position to sell. It's a vary command thing to do. By cutting back the work force it makes the books look much healthier and since this was done before the end of the 1st quarter it should give them positive numbers on their P&L going into the 2nd quarter. At that time they would start to look for a buyer.
Now this is just a thought but I have been involved with quite a few buy outs and this looks like its a move to sell.
Now if this was a move just to make Anet more profitable we could see more if the P&L doesn't show a positive results at the end of the quarter. Never the less everyone at Anet is walking on egg shells and will be doing so for sometime at least till NCsoft shows their true intentions.

I certainly hope so. NCSoft has no business being in the western market.
I think that with the way things are GW2 can go on for a very long time. To avoid huge releases they can focus on gradually releasing new content via the living world. This is something they're already doing, i.e. allowing players to have access to Istan after episode one of living world season 4. They have done this with other living world seasons, Istan is just the most recent one. This would allow them to release high quality content on a smaller scale and still have it be enjoyable.
Look, just let me return to Cantha. That's all I want from the game. That's all I've ever wanted. Let me explore the Echovald Forest and Jade Sea again.
I'm sleepy and misread this as "Look, just let me return to Canada" Lol

Damn xenophobic Canadians with their Ministry of Purity and their attempted genocide of the Tengu.

I'd say higher standards even. Ever since the start of season 3, content production has been larger, more reliable, and of a higher quality than anything from the game's early years.

I wish my country had easily recognized products to blast people with. The durian is deadly and not funny.

New game please. Put this in maintnance mode, but give me gw3 that is closer to gw1
Sorry, a.net admitted that they made huge mistakes with GW1. Why would the company go backwards? At least GW2 is a true MMO. GW1 was a lobby game. You want a GW1 game then play GW1.

Lobby games have unique strengths that MMOs are not capable of (and vice versa). Guild Wars 1 had unique strengths which are not present in Guild Wars 2, or any other game.
And it is not unfair to want a new game like Guild Wars 1. It is, in fact, a huge loss to the industry that there is not a modern game like Guild Wars 1.
