Combat Levels

I still don't fully understand how combat levels work, i understand they make you better but how exacly do you raise the level? sometimes i dont level up when i get a skill, sometimes i level twice, very confusing.

Also, I play with my girlfriend but she just doesn't play as much, if my combat level is like 10 or 20 levels above her would that mess up xp? would she get less? or more? or how would that work?

One more random questioin, if i'm a private pilot can i also be imperal or rebel also (at the same time) or can you only be one at a time.

if a skill box contains combat modifiers, like for accuracy or speed, then you will see an increase in your combat level.

you can group with people of lower CL then you just fine, it's not the most efficient way to get XP, but it's not too shabby.

let me see if i remember:

 a rebel on the ground can be any of the 3 rebel factions in space.  as well as CorSec or Smuggler's Alliance in the nuetral line.

an imperial can be any of the 3 imperial space factions.   as well as Corsec or RSF in the nuetral line.

but i dont fully understand the grouping thing, if im higher level and we group would she loose xp? (i dont care much about my xp)
