The one thing I found about Second Life is its huge computing demands. My old AMD 2000 with FX5900 system struggled to cope with it and even my brand new AMD 3500 with ATI 256 Meg X800XL system wobbles when its busy. How do others find it? I've not seen any complaints here although I have on the official forums.

Sadly, you can only get at the many "official" wikis (run by volunteers and some members of the staff) after you log in, because there are lots of tips and hints there to improve the performance of Second Life. I rarely found someone that was happy with the defaults.
My apologies for the shameless plug, but I have some tips on improving performance on my blog. In the future, Linden Lab has announced that many areas of their web sites will be "public" (ie. viewable to people who haven't registered yet) and many users have volunteered to suggest tips and ideas on how to help new users to get proper settings for their own cards, so that they get a much better experience when logging in for the first time.
I suffered for 6 months with very low frame rates just because all this information was not written down Then one day one of the employees posted these suggestions on the forums - and things changed to a point I couldn't believe what I was seeing! It's really a matter of tweaking a lot with the settings...

yhea tweaking with the graphic option help a lot. i dont have a that big computer and my everage fps is about 25 fps. In crowded area it drop to about 15 and in area with not a lot of thing it will go higher then 50.
But its true that the computing demand is often huge, for exemple just to rander my av as is it now with hi tech armor and super hair attachment my fps go from 80 to 30 .
