any idea if this game will have boats that players can captain? That would be so awsome!! To sail the high seas wth you NPC crew or budies, talk about PWNAGE!
Yes, player owned boats. Sea travel will be dangerous (safe, known routes vs. quicker but riskier routes) & potentially profitable with the emphasis on regional economies.
Here is what is contained in the FAQ regarding boats. But keep in mind that player built and controlled boats will not be in game until sometime after release.
13.1.1 Will there be boats or ships?
Yes, both NPC-controlled as well as player-controlled and owned.
Player-owned ships will need to be crafted by the appropriate crafting classes.
Various types of player owned ships will be available, including 'coast hugger' ships, as well as ocean going vessels, some better for defense, some better for hauling equipment, etc...
Players will, just like with their residences and their horses, be able to both store goods in their ships. They will also be able to enhance their ships by equipping them with items.
13.1.2 Will there be anything to do on boats?
We believe travel should be funits a basic part of the adventure. With that in mind, encounters and other events can and will occur while on board boats and ships. Sea monsters will be able to attack not only the characters on a ship, but do damage to the ship itself. This is also the case with pirates.
A vast empty ocean, devoid of land, is unlikely. Expect to see lots of islands or archipelagoes en route to your destination.

It's being funded by microsoft so I would say it's a 50/50 chance. I am now chossing not to hit the enter key 50 times and will say now that was a joke chances are this game will be released.
On the original topic I want a ton of cannons so that I can blast seaside towns to the bottom of the ocean (there were cannons in the middle ages and I'm sure there were in middle earth which designed our perspective of high fantasy.) Well even if there weren't I want a cannon. I seem to be mindlessly typing pointless dribble so I'll just post this now.

I think boats will be in at release, it will just be a while until people are advanced enough to create/need them.

Well there might be smaler boats like 4 person max which would be easy to make because of small size (you got to start somewhere). And after that you make bigger boats and at end game you do big ships (also long building time) like galleon or something like that.

Boats will be in at release. I've never heard them say anything to the contrary. Instead they've discussed how boats are integral to gameplay in Vanguard, and how player ships will be needed to even travel between continents.
I find it difficult to believe that they aren't going to have ships in at release, thereby not allowing players to move between continents.
I don't think that players will be taveling between continents when this game first comes out. So I'm going with quick1silver on this. It is probably going to be a little while before any real boat travel and exploration begins.
Originally posted by Gresteh As far as i know, boats are already implemented in the beta 0. Horses are not implemented yet.
From what I've heard yes boats are in. The sailing mechanism (stearing etc) is not finished though, I read somewhere about a dev complaining that he kept smashing it into the harbour all the time so. I'm hoping they will be in at release but I wouldn't mind waiting till they finished the stearing system. It'd be mighty expensive to travel by sea if the only way to stop the boat was to ram it into the pier

Yes, it has been confirmed by Aradune Mithara (Brad McQuaid) that there will be boats that will be NPC-operated boats for lower level avatars so that if someone starts on one continent because they wished to be a certain race/class, but all of their guildies and friends started on another continent, they would be able to travel to their friends.
Keep in mind that there is a caravan system to move characters while they are offline between cities, but in order to partake in boat travel you have to be there and alert because of sea-attacks from pirates or other denizens.
These intercontinental boats at the beginning of the game will be costy or limited in their travel so that you cannot just switch between continents easily as a lower level character when the game starts. They have these boats available to lower level characters so that they can take a one-time trip to be with their friends, or at least that is their current view on boats in beta-0.
I will try to find the direct quote from the Vanguard forums or a fansite and will either edit my post or repost with the quote.
Boats and high sea adventures is a real plus. The more things like this they add to a game the better and more fun it will be for all. It will also have more staying power which is something I look for when picking a new MMORPG.

Sailing (op cid)
Possibly piracy and sea trading too.

Please don't talk about 'PWNAGE'...

That's the first rule of PWNAGE...
