It's not much of an MMORPG. Sorry to disappoint. It's a straight survival MMO with out of place RPG elements. It looks decent, has polish, but other games provide way more and better in each of the feature departments

What do you mean by RPG elements though? I'm guessing you mean NPCs and quests....but to me it seems....though I haven't played it....that a good amount t of RP fun can be had exploring with friends and trying to cut out your own piece of the wilderness to build a town or whatever...the game seems to be working on it's own lore...so not really sure what RPG elements it's missing but I could be wrong

I don't think it's ever tried or meant to be an MMORPG. It's always talked about being a survival game with other players. It's also in alpha with a long time to go before it's released to the public. I will say this, I do have a couple friends who were lucky enough to get in and while they cannot share details, they've all agreed that in its current alpha state, it's already better overall than most games that release in early access. That's saying something

This is a sandbox MMO. And I guess if you RP'd in it then it would def be a sandbox MMORPG for you. I can't wait for roving bands of multi-boxers rolling over players with butter knives taking all the lootz! It'll be fun to watch.

Is it against the NDA to mention the butter knives?

Had a friend not really enjoy the alpha, but I'm still looking forward to it. Have to treat it like a really big survival server though.

So many options for sandbox survival MMOs, seems all they are making these days. Would like to see how Amazon thinks they can impact the MMO market with more of the same? Whats different thats gonna win hearts?

RPG elements as in there's crafting levels, character levels, character stats to invest in, and when you're in combat numbers fly off the target.

In terms of you and your buddies going out into the wild and carving out your own thing, it's not really that either. Unless by buddies you mean your guild whose goal is to conquer a piece of the map and defend it if another guild decides they want it.

All housing/bases are currently built on contested nodes. It's not like other games where you just go find somewhere and do your thing and live. It's like a more visually polished passive aggressive version of Crowfall with abysmal combat and contrived lore.

Pick up flint rock, pick up sticks, magically make carving knife, axe, sickle, and pick. Chop trees, break up some rocks, make lumber and brick go store it in a sanctuary and have 0 reason to use it for yourself.

At least in a game like Archeage you chop a tree down, you make your planks, you make your pack, you transport it on your donkey or wagon and you make YOUR house. This isn't that.

I'll say this, if New World:
    • overhauled the combat
    • allow players to place their own small plots outside of the nodes
    • had much better mining mechanics (you're there for an alchemy resource)
    • Had WAY more enemy NPCs to engage with (like world bosses etc)
    • had actual packs you had to carry
allowed layered crafting of WAY more things

It would be on to something. It simply is not.

That does not change anything in what I said. I have seen some big budget games tank as well as small indy stuff. Matter of fact, EQ1 was a small studio with a great idea that started the MMO model that was copied over and over. I dont put stock in the size of any studio, big or small.

When I asked the question: "is it a survival game or is that what some people have just said - other than those who say its a running simulator"

the answer I got was: a survival game like Conan Exiles. Which ties into the article.

I have been in some alphas a while back - which eventually launched as mmos - which at the time of testing had very little to do: no progression, no quests, no gear, no npcs etc. etc. The term "survival game" hadn't been coined at the time but if it had .....

So I think its to early to say that New Worlds is a ..... or a .......

And it may end up being more than one simple designation. Maybe New Worlds the Survival Game, f2p and New Worlds, the quest based rpg for Amazon Prime members and New Worlds, the full blown mmo for members of Amazon Gaming Unlimited - doesn't exist today but you get the idea.

Maybe it does turn out to be just a survival game but until we know I think its a little early to jump to conclusions. Its clearly no longer just "a running simulator" that some posters called it!

Name a sandbox MMO that has come out since starwars galaxies that had any sort of budget behind it. I bet you cant.

And Verant was small-ish when they put together EQ, but it was backed by Sony. This is also not 1999 and online games are not in their infancy. Two of the most successful MMOs of that era were sandboxes anyhow, UO and AC. After WoW's success, most studios broke away from trying to do anything new or interesting and just kept putting out the same theme park trash which led the MMO genre into the pit it's in right now. I applaud Amazon for being willing to invest money into something different to see if it will work. The merging of traditional mmorpg elements and survival elements seems to be the logical next step for the mmorpg genre anyway. Nobody has done it yet.

No, Meridian was the first MMO and also a small studio. EQ1 was the first MMO model every copied. Pls read before responding.

EVE off the top of my head. My point is most new MMOs are Sandbox, what are they going to do different that gonna capture the hearts of gamers? Why you criticizing my questions? I want to know, because the last Sandbox MMO that got me playing for a number of year was SWG. Didnt like EVE myself. Sandbox MMOs seem to capture a large number of players and then most Sandbox MMOs turn into a ghost town. ARK seems to keep gamers despite the fact it's a buggy mess?

    NO WAY.!!!!

If Smedley is behind this it will be a half baked game similar to H1Z1.He was behind Landmark as well ,another half baked idea.

Knowing it is Smedley i expect ONE map and a very dull game.
I will just stick to Atlas because i have lost all faith in Smedley...ALL OF IT.

No Ark and Atlas are no longer a buggy mess, yes they were at one time but not anymore. It still wouldn't matter if i had to choose from a game like H1Z1 or Atlas/Ark i would choose both Ark and Atlas in their most buggy state way before Smedley's H1Z1.

Furthermore,WTF are those giant immersion ruining icons above player heads, geesh can we lose the 1990's game design? There looks to be a lack of resources/items in the game's world near the beaches. This game will never match the physx water of Atlas.

Hitting stone/rock sounds like hitting wood lmao.Brings back days of EQ using identical icons for different items. Why is there the same circle animation used in bandaging while harvesting?Going to have zombies..lmao something here smells of H1Z1 all over again but more in line with survival games.
Everyone uses the same outpost storage, crafting stations, seems weak.
I don't see this game holding any weight versus Ark or Atlas, none at all,a $15 game will likely be selling for $80 bucks.

Only if it works. And sells. If it doesn't no one will copy it. There are plenty of successful games out there with great features that other companies aren't copying, some have been out for years. So hoping that a game like this will change the industry is a little naive. Especially as the core concept is niche at best. Know why there aren't any other 16th century based games out there? No demand.

No matter how good this game is I will probably never try it, unless it's free, but even then I've seen the art and I doubt it'll keep my interest. I was pulled into Conan Exiles for a while, first real foray into the survival genre, and that kept my interest for a while, because CE is a famous IP and the game has a unique character and world design. But for me the survival genre is flawed at it's core. PvP is a hot mess most of the time, the building can be fun, but then the survival aspect is just an annoyance.

Amazon was working on 3 games, one has died already, Breakaway, I haven't hear much about Crucible for a while, but what are the odds it will be able to top Fortnite or Apex Legends in that category? And last there is New World. Looking at that line up, would you invest in that company? I have serious doubts in the leadership there. It's so baffling the direction they are going in that I wonder if they are making games just to expand the capabilities of their Lumberyard Engine. But even then, why not try to make games that will actually make money while doing that?

Despite all the money and talent they have - Amazon still struggling to make a compelling MMO.

I'm wondering if Amazon is using that money and talent to develop new game mechanics, or if they're focused on developing a new way to monetize streaming.  One of the main features in New World was the supposed to be the ability to stream gameplay.

I am interested in the historical period.  I'd love to see a full game based in this era.  I am not interested in streaming, either myself or others.  So, I'm very cautiously hoping that the effort goes into the game, and not the marketing of yet another survival game.

I am pretty cynical of the game.

When Facebook got into game dev they had a studio like Ready at Dawn to actually explore and make new genres.   The Echo series are pretty much amazing zeroG movement games (and genre making), a story game, a rugby like game, and a FPS.

When Amazon tried it they had two far too late esports games, that got cancelled.   And a survival game who's feature is that they tossed TONS of money tossed at assets and servers.   Then they pretty much utterly removed solo building (kind of the point of the genre, especially when most other things in genre are intentionally frustrating to emphasize building), in hopes of amplifying EVE style SOV PvP grouping.

New World will have it's fans.   But they'll be expensive to get and keep.

Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.

It's in Alpha...they just posted an article on how they are stopping the first ALPHA to implement ideas they got from the community.

Yes, we have all heard this before however, I am still willing to wait until it is released, and not in an early testing state before passing judgment. ALPHA is usually a long way from release. Did you know that?

I would like to know, at this point in a game in an ALPHA state, if the systems they have in place at this point actually work as intended or is it bug filled mess? Not a huge deal, but it would be a good indicator of how closely they are paying attention to quality going forward.

I do hope they add more systems, and I hope it releases complete and ends up being successful. Which we can't really judge from an ALPHA.

I'm always a realist with low expectations about everything, but I still hope for MMORPG success stories no matter the 'odds' stacked against a game. Whether that's Smedley involvement, a bad track record or whatever.

As a gamer I want more fun options to throw money at...

If Amazon is just trying to diversify their business portfolio and show the world that they have their 'fingers on the pulse of everything' and end up releasing a shitty game, then I won't waste my time/money at it.

Until then I'll hope for the best, but expect the worst until reviews come out.

Even then, if I see something in it worth while and think I can get my $$ worth out of a purchase I'll prbly still check it out, because some reviews I've thought were spot on and others way off the mark on other games.

I'm not worried about a Dev trying to create something outside the box like the 16th Century. I like when Devs branch out into uncharted territory like that. If we only wanted games based off other games all the time this genre would be doomed...oh wait...
