it powers down on its own? or does it just sit there? if it powers down, I'd check to see if your cpu fan is seated well, they're pretty touchy nowadays. if NOT on right, then i'd return the CPU and say it came that way, because it's burnt out and destroyed, lol. other boot up problems, make sure you've got your master and slaves straight, and be sure to put the hard drive (if e-IDE) onto the primary ide slot on the motherboard, rather than on an ide controller card. I did that on this computer and was so confused as to why it wouldn't boot up, I was trial and erroring everything, but the prob was the hard drive didn't have drivers for the IDE card. also make sure the ram is firmly put in, that's important.

*edit* what specs are you trying and what's the wattage on your power supply, that's a possibility. and is it ATX or BTX?

It power down on it's own. I cpu fan is on fine as I know of. The master and slave stuff is all find and I still have the problem if almost everything is unpluged like video card harddrive disk drive and sound card is all unpluged.

ATX or BTX, you mean motherboard right? 500 WAT. Do you have aim or somthing that would be easier to talk on.

id check your wiring from the case to the motherboard there might be a short or its not connected. only thing i could think of.

edit: check the way your mobo is screwed into your case there may be a short in the back from the screws touching parts on the motherboard.

all I have is xfire, hehe. by BTX I mean power supply, but 500 watt is plenty so we won't worry about that. check if the CMOS chip is ok, (stands for something really complicated, can't remember right now) because aside from that I can't really think of anything right now that would power the whole thing down... You may be looking at defective hardware, but wait a bit for someone perhaps more knowledgeable to help you out. make absolutely sure the RAM is firmly seated, but even if it weren't I don't think it'd shut down like that. it's just give errors. does the computer make any beeps at all? they're the indicator if the POST went all right. 1 beep is good, more beeps indicate something depending on the number/pattern from which you can look up what it means.

*edit* complementary metal oxide semiconductor (cmos) it's basically a small battery that keeps the settings on boot up, like the boot order and such. it's a circular silver disc on the motherboard, just check if it's scratched or anything.

*another edit* go ahead and plug the graphics/harddrive back in.
