imageTodd Howard Knew There Would be 'Well-Deserved Criticism' for Fallout 76 - MMORPG.com

IGN has a new "unfiltered" interview with Bethesda's Todd Howard where he acknowledges the rough start to Fallout 76. Howard admits that the company knew that FO76 was "going to have a lot of bumps", though he attributes the rough patches to "new systems and things like that".

I wonder how many players were lost because of that garbage bag they sent out with the CE instead of the one they couldn't make because of "production costs".

I didn't fall for it because I'm not a rube, I learned my lesson way back when Warhammer Online turned out to be garbage lol.

And yet Howard demanded $60 price at launch.

There is no comparison to ESO, which only had one real issue at launch which was bots. That and other minor issues were sorted by the six week point, I for one will want to see more then one post launch review of anything this guy has his hand in before I even consider buying.

I know right, the balls on this guy to try to compare ESO at launch to this baked turd.

Bethesda games are synonym with buggy games. They are also renown to be fixed by community effort. That is, until they forced their online store or in the case of 76, a game that is multiplayer and thus needs to be fixed by the company itself.

Since they seem to think that they will be able to aggressively monetise modding (an activity that, apart from sexual based mods, never made any profit for the modders), I don't foresee any bright future for any future Bethesda game, single player or otherwise.

There is also the issue of the sales pitch he peddled regarding this game. All in camera, all in high profile interview or events, all raising hype for the disaster that it was Fallout 76.

Bethesda seems to follow the same down spiral road Bioware took.

I think the masses of broken quests, crashes, instancing and phasing problems were pretty relevant too..

ESO was a complete disaster zone when it launched.

Right, but it is clear management felt releasing in time for holiday sales was more important than delivering a more stable game.

So to sum up... "We knew we were selling you a half baked turd cake, but decided that many gamers are overly monied fools with short term memories, so full con ahead." Glad I never bought into this train wreck.

Oh well Toddster, congratulations on absolutely destroying my trust and respect in the entire Bethesda brand with your complete cow pat of a game.
Slightly over dramatic, don't ya think? :)

I actually enjoyed playing back around launch, and plan on one day returning for another look in the near future.

I have a lot of fun playing it now. :) I don't look for the bad. If it's fun, I'll play it. If it's not, I put it away and look in on it later. Life's too short to get too bent out of shape over games. :)

There was more than just a bad product, like the bonuses for pre orders ordeal,Bethesda simply operates like a scummy business. This is what most big businesses do,they try their best to scam you with crappy products and then in many cases cash shops that do not belong in games.
They pulled scummy moves with Elder Scrolls then of course rebuffed and added in a cash shop,oh a cash shop is suppose to be better than a sub fee?

This is what they do,they start with real scummy moves and if nobody complains, they make away like bandits and if people complain ,they change it,either way they are trying to rip off customers, people that are loyal and giving them money, yeah good idea, let's try and screw them over.

How about the bonus items scam "the backpack"for example with pre orders, this operation/Zenimax never seem to stop trying to screw people over.

    Cash shop=SCUMMY business operations.

I jumped back in a couple of days ago and yeah it can be fun at times. Now, I never got to the super high levels, but it really sucks when a lvl 200+ guy runs through an area and spawns lvl 150 mobs in the middle portion of the map right in your main questline area.... i really wish they went with servers more like every other 'survival' game out there.

This sort of thing just shows that scaling only works in the other direction. Scaling should only be done downwards, never upwards.

That is the icing on the cake to all of this. They knew it would be pretty bad upon release yet released it as a full price game. To put the cherry on it, they quickly sunk the price as 'sales' shortly after release, so they knew they pushing it. If this released as 40$ or something originally, then maybe. I mean even Ubisoft with New Dawn knew that game wasn't worth 60$ (some will argue it wasn't even worth 40), but they weren't going crazy and it wasn't horrid upon release.

Todd should've just kept his mouth shut.

It isn't hard to look at that statement and realize how completely arrogant it sounds.  It doesn't take a PR manager to spot that.

It's sort of "damned if you do/damned if you don't" isn't it?

They are admitting they messed up. If they don't admit it then players think they are arrogant. If they do admit it then of course players go for the throat.

But of course, results speak louder than words so I think game companies should spend more on results and speak less to the players.

The whole "we knew it wasn't gonna review well" isn't so much a mistake as an acknowledgement they advertised and sold a game at full AAA price they knew wasn't up to snuff.

He should've stopped at "It wasn't well-received for good reason, we're working on improving it."  The statement here, on top of the bag fiasco, just screams "Fuck you guys, pay us."
