Not sure why Blizzard wouldn't develop a new MMORPG.
....because you are out of your mind if you think they would get +10mil subs, and Blizzard knows that.
They already have WoW.
People are talking how there are no new AAA mmos in the making but there are 2 factors that are never taken into account:
1) There is very limited number of developers with experience and expertize to pull it off. It is hard to believe from armchair developer perspective but it is quite a feat, those things are huge projects.
2) Those who do have the resources - in expertize and money mostly have their own mmo thus it makes no sense to makev a new one, you would only be shooting yourself in the foot with players leaving one of your mmos for another.
Case in point, let's say Bliz could hope to achieve same revenue with new mmo as they are making with WoW atm but the cost would be for 6-7 years drowning 150m into development while making 0 money back in that period + decreased revenue on WoW once it is released.
It just makes no business sense.
Makes no business sense for them not to have a next generation mmo ready to sell alongside WoW eventually as it loses market share. It is old and has bored too many previous subscribers and will soon be too dated-looking to attract new ones. It would make good business sense to tack a new mmo on to the WoW subscription in a manner similar to Classic to keep subscriptions up while still making money from the new games release and the separate cash shops, expacs etc.
Plot twist.... WoW Classic is a money grab to fund an all new MMO, either StarCraft or Diablo But on a serious note, it is fact that WoW is constantly losing subscribers, is it not? And even if Classic is a success, there are going to be plenty of subs that just came and went for the nostalgia, while the rest will resort back to wanting patches and expansions until it is back on track with modern WoW again. Does that make sense?? Probably not..
I dont' know how many players wow have now. But even if wow is bleeding subs, why are people surprise? It is a 15 year old game.

I cant agree with you. You should be developing your new MMO to retire your old one that is getting dated and lost the interest of all subs you used to have. Blizzard has with wow and will again get those subs worldwide if they launch a new mmo. Wow players will flock to it. As for your investment model it makes no sense. Of course you are going to pump funds for a new project without earning income on it but revenue from the others will be sustaining you. When its time to launch now you have a new revenue stream for 15+ years.

They are resurrecting the classic version of their old MMO and fans are one move away from turning into full musical.
What you are saying is purely subjective. WoW's initial success rode on many factors. Being a good MMO was just one of them.

"One of the most difficult tasks men can perform, however much others may despise it, is the invention of good games and it cannot be done by men out of touch with their instinctive selves." - Carl Jung
