Debating if I want to start playing SWG.

Hey everyone I had a couple questions reguarding if you guys think I will like this game.  Im a big mmorpg fan.  I've played almost all of them.  I never tried  SWG mainly cuz well... im not a star wars or sci fi fan.  I'm huge on PvP though.

So my questions are.....

How is the PvP in this game?

If I'm not a starwars/sci fi fan... do you think I will enjoy it?

What I'm looking for in a game is...  Solo friendly, Good PvP,  Good Crafting, No downtime and most important....... Fun Factor.

Thanks in advance.

Well, if you're not a Star Wars fan, there's not a lot you're missing out on. The PvP is decent, but some servers are more active than others. The crafting system is well done, the game is quite solo friendly, and there isn't much downtime at all. As far as things along the lines o the fun factor, some people love the game, and others hate it or what SOE is doing with it.
IMO, it's a decent MMO...I'm also a huge Star Wars fan, so I love the game either way. There's just some bad qualities. I would say to download a free trial and give it a try. Who knows, you may like it.

DAoC: Cadore Ironmace, 50 Cleric (retired)

SWG: Dolthin Erid, Master CH/Master Pistoleer (NGE'd)

Waiting for: Warhammer Online/Age of Conan

This combination of things you present actually has me thinking.

If these are your pre-requisites, then SWG is the game for you. It's not the best in any one of these categories except perhaps solo-friendly, but in tandem it has the most of these high up there of any MMO.

I dissagre... having crafted in just about every MMO out there I'd have to say that SWG is the best crafting system around. And I don't remember ever having downtime in the game... other than travelling to the next target.

I guess it wouldnt hurt to give it a try then.  I've had bad experiences with SoE games but I've never heard anything bad specifically about SWG other then the lag... which I heard they fixed.  I just wasn't sure if I would like it if I wasn't a star wars fan.   I mean.. I don't dislike star wars... I just never was a fan.

Thanks for the replies folks.  It helped alot.

So you are saying that SWG IS solo-friendly? If so, would you please describe your template? I am a TKM/Fencer and am having no luck doing mission terminal quests on my own.

Im about to start playing and would like to know which server the community here finds to be more active in pvp. What kind of pvp is it? Can I get ganked when just roaming about out of city? I don't care but I am curious.

More tactical than e.g. in WoW. Usually you gather with others of your faction and decide to hit an NPC city with enemy faction personnel or a base of the enemy (destroying bases can switch whole planets to your side if you destroy enough). That activity triggers a response by the enemy player special forces (aka PvP enabled players of the other side). Its more like the usual WoW response to a raid, where the defenders bring in more and more forces. Its usually NOT like the casual PvP you get on WoW PvP servers where you just travel to an area where players from the other side do their quests and you whack them.
To find out which servers are most active in PvP in the Galactic War check out this forum :

The OTHER PvP is BH vs mark (usually a Jedi). You get a bounty mission from a terminal, find the mark through seeker droids or informants and then travel there. You, and only you, can fight the mark.  Much more fun than fighting Jedi is fighting voluntary marks ... check out this site :
    http://www.swghuntersguild.com
All the fun of hunting Jedi with none of the whining and griefing.
If I'm not a starwars/sci fi fan... do you think I will enjoy it?
Yes, because there is plenty to do. You might even like SWG more if you are NOT a hard-core SW fan because the game is NOT exactly the canon SW universe.
What I'm looking for in a game is...  Solo friendly,
Not as solo-friendly as before (you could solo 95 % of the game, which was boring) but soloing is possible. Just takes a bit longer than in a group and you cant do the high end combat content alone. E.g. I do 80 % solo, 20 % in a group.
    Good PvP,
    IMHO yes
    Good Crafting,
SWG has maybe the best crafting system in the MMORPG genre ... its certainly one of the top three. You could spend 2 years in the game without a single fight, just playing crafters or entertainers. Thats a BIG difference to any other game I know where crafting is something that fighters do in their downtime.
    No downtime
IMHO there is ALWAYS something to do. Especially if you are a crafter. If you are a fighter and powerwaltz through all the content, you MAY have seen most content after 6 months or so. But that only means you have seen a small part of the game.
    and most important....... Fun Factor.
Fun factor is high, especially if you are in a guild or have a list of in game friends you can chat with. If you are an explorer, you will need MONTHS to explore the planets. If you are an achiever there are BILLIONS to earn and hundreds of high end items and loot to gather. If you are a killer, there is the PvP rating you can maximize or the bounty body count to raise (try to reach the 200 player bounties like the best BHs have). If you are a sozialiser there are player event tools in SWG that allow you to create a HUGE variety of different events ... especially as an entertainer you can be part of Big Bands, Ballet troupes, Phat Wookiee Rap Groups, Stand up comedians .. you name it.
    Have fun

    Simple answer:
    Any template can solo
    1) If you are a TKM / Fencer are you a MASTER fencer and are you using armor? A TKM/Fencer combo, while it has nice defense mods, is lousy if you're wielding a weapon because you don't get to use the best ability you have: Unarmed Center of Being. If you're wielding a weapon and NOT wearing armor you're killing yourself because you don't get your TKM innate armor bonuses while wielding a weapon.

    2) If you plan to solo it's best to have some Medic in your template.

Personally I loved my TKM/MCM/Nov Commando template. I could use various commando weapons (granted with crappy accuracy) from range until things got close and in a fight I was a total killing machine.

    Bottom line:
Any combat template can solo if you have some Medic in it.

Aside from the suggestion to get novice medic:  Power Boost, it's 500 free health and you should use it all the time and everytime.  Also, Teras Kasi gives innate TK armor, which isn't very good at all.  Get Battle Armor, as Fencer certs you in that and wear it.

Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
