Do you think and analyse before investing time and money on an MMO?

It depends on how much the game costs, if its a AAA game then yeah, youtube reviews, lets plays, the works, before i buy, or try if there is a free trial of some kind. I don't have time to play 'all' the games that are coming out these days, i am still playing Division 2 when i can after all, between BDO, FFXIV and occasionally, Eve Online. So a game really has to score big and not be laden down with red flags before i consider it, which is why Anthem never made it on my 'try' list nor did ME:Andromeda, FO76, Sea of Thieves or Atlas, so many dodged bullets!  i am practically Neo!  :p

Reading too much about games up front ruins the experience rather often, for me that is.

So I go in with as little info as possible. That way the experience is always fresh. Sometimes that means I get burned yes but I prefer it that way.

YA know.. Steam should offer a Game Roulette option, where every week you get a new game downloaded to your system to play.. and at the end of the week, you check box if you want to play this game again.. or Nahh.

And it uses that data to sort future games for you.. so eventually as the weeks go by, they use this algorithm to start to presort games, o you get more games that you enjoy as you wean your way through the suckage.

You know Steam is actually working on this right? Not the roulette function but the algorithm,  to predict and show specific games you might like based on previous games bought, time played, preference for AAA or Indie etc.

So how do you do it?

I don't really expect games to be anything other than what they are. I don't expect them to last forever, I don't expect that there will be any guarantees that I will like it the entire time.

If the aesthetics are decent, the world decent I'll give it a shot. If I find that I am enjoying myself I continue. If not then I don't play anymore.

I don't really believe in being "burned" by a video game. How is that even possible? They aren't that expensive and if one finds the cost a bit challenging then one must deal with that first and foremost.

As far as my time, again, if I'm enjoying myself then time well spent. If not then I do something else.

There are no guarantees in life and I certainly don't expect a bit of entertainment to be anything other than it is. Key word is "expect." If the game is really that amazing then bonus. If not then no skin off my nose.
The cost isn't the how much the game is priced at or even subs but costs in time. That is something I can ill afford which is why I am a little hesitant to invest in some games.

There are games where to get to the enjoyable part you have to take part in the not so enjoyable part. So not always the question of 'enjoying yourself' either.
Then I wouldn't play it. we all have a certain level of agency in our lives. If I couldn't find any enjoyment until I got to some sort of "end" then the game wouldn't even be on my hard drive.

And for me, time is more important than money. I value my time more than I value money. so if a game is wasting my time then I'd stop.

Life is hard enough without us making it harder for ourselves.

Sometimes picking games is like getting married.

My first marriage (right after college) was to someone I had known since 6th grade. Length of marriage - 5 years.

My second marriage was to someone I met and dated for only 2 months. Length of marriage - 21 years and counting.

So you plan and you plan, and you analyze and analyze - but in the end you roll the dice and take your chances.

I do some of that but in the end nothing beats first hand knowledge. If they have a free trail, that's great, but if they don't and I buy it and dump it after a month I'm only out less than a night out... no biggie.

I agree, but that's tough to do. I will never be able to personally try everything that catches my eye. Some games just do not due to features or lack of features. I'm fairly picky with the features I look for. I may miss some good games, but I don't mind ;)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I did not, but it make sense they would do that, as that is just good marketing, and with internet it would be just poor form to track your clients spending to better serve them, as a lot of other companies do the same thing.. hence why stores have "club reward cards" so they can track what you buy to allow them to sell you more of it.

If i didn't i would be playing Anthem right now. So yes, i carefully research before paying for games. I have blindly paid for some games in the past, i got lucky with some while others taught me to never do it again.

  • foppoteefoppotee Member RarePosts: 536
I try to do proper research prior to playing a game to learn if I think I'll like it long term.  I prefer to invest my time into a game before investing any money, but that depends upon the game & how it is being released.  I've never paid for Early Access neither nor do I plan to.  Even after playing a game for a lengthy time it serves one well to analyse whether if the cost is still worth the hopeful fun it is adding then deciding to continue or discard it.

There is another aspect I consider before buying games: Rewarding the game maker. If a game has elements that are "just wrong" in my opinion, I will not reward their decisions by purchasing the game.

I've missed some interesting looking games because of this ;)

Of course this naturally leads me to talking myself out of playing almost everything made these days so I'm probably missing out on at least a few gems out there.

Yea, I did the same, talked myself out of getting in on the ground floor of Star Citizen, a real gem.

Thank you, I actually think that you need to analyze everything well and then make a decision. In fact, I don't often invest in games, it only happens when I really like the game and can't put it down. I have had the ability to analyze for a long time. I needed a nursing writer and didn't have the time to do it the way things and games take up so much time. In this case, I was also analyzing the situation, whether to sacrifice something or to use the services of competent people. After analyzing everything, I decided to use professionals and I did not regret it, because I could continue to spend time on my hobbies. What do you consider when investing in games?

Thank you, I always take the time to think before I buy. It is necessary to analyze whether this investment is worth it

Sounds like a bot response. Not  bad, but not good.

I am not a robot, I was just in a hurry, and the topic of discussion interested me, so I decided that I would return to it later and finish my thought. I'm sorry if it didn't seem real to you .

I did this to make the example clearer . This is my way of communication, I like accuracy, when everything is immediately clear and no additional questions are needed.

Depends on the price.  Sub 30$ even if it's garbage, you'll get your money's worth.  Beyond that.  Reviews, reviews, words, screenshots.  I almost never watch video (my families always like how did it look I'm like Who knows), TEXT is really my go to, in anything.  Tell me what is what.

Personally, I've learned from past experiences and now take a cautious approach when investing time and money in MMOs. While the excitement of trying out new games is tempting, I tend to prioritize proven and well-established ones like WoW, GW2, FFXIV, or ESO. These games have stood the test of time and are less likely to shut down abruptly.

While I understand the enjoyment of exploring new MMOs, I prefer to balance my curiosity with the risk of potential disappointment. In the end, it's essential to find a gaming experience that provides both enjoyment and stability to make the most of my time and money.

However, speaking of entertainment and investing time and money in gaming platforms, it's also essential to mention other popular forms of entertainment, such as online casinos. Many people find allure in casino games and want to find ways to improve their chances of winning. If you are also interested in casinos and gambling entertainment, you might be interested in the article "Online Casino Tipps and Tricks" on the Casino Allianz website, where you can find useful advice and tricks for successful gaming in online casinos.

The article is available at the following link: https://casinoallianz.com/blog/tipps-und-tricks/

By considering these tips and tricks, you can enhance your gaming skills and make your time at the casino even more enjoyable and successful. Remember that playing for money should be done in a healthy balance with your budget, and always gamble responsibly.

If this is the future of forums, they are dead.
We don't know the future until we get there.

My best guess is that in the early days there weren't many ways to get good information; however, paths to getting game info have exploded (wiki, youtube, etc) and interests so specialized that a 'general' forum will probably struggle.
