I was thinking about getting Civilization: Beyond Earth + expansion for some entry level 4x gaming. Any thoughts on its quality anyone? It seems to be a rather devisive title.

    /Cheers,
    Lahnmir
Ive never felt the Civ games were very good 4x at all they are TBS  and rather weak at that ...

      Entertaining yes ...

     4x  no

      Grand Strategy ..lol

They are nice game for a kid to play for learning features and history tho .. and they are very well done , for what they are
I am not looking for something particulary complex to be honest, I was just wondering if it was Civ in Space or a an Alpha Centauri done Civ style game. That, and if it was well made and fun of course.

    /Cheers,
    Lahnmir
It is well made and fun
That depends on your point of view.  I still replay Civ games, BE was good for a playthrough once or twice.  It just lacked replayability.
agreed , Gal Civ 3 delivers much more , especially if you cab grab it on sale

I own Gal Civ 3 and have never played it. Time to install I guess, thanks guys! I don’t have any of the DLC, hope that is not needed to enjoy it.

Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

Crusade was/is a game changer and really makes the game a lot better... I would recommend that one for sure ...

Also play your first game on beginner , and dont forget you can Rush buy ships that are under conscruction ( very important early on , tho not so much on Beginner ) good habit tho

Huge AOW fan but i just can't get into the setting. Don't get me wrong i like Sci-fi , But something about this being a Age of Wonders game and not being fantasy turns me off. I'll pick this up next year in sale for sure.

You forgot the drinking.  Grand strategy board games are especially good at inducing alcoholism.  They sold many copies of Risk and Axis & Allies to fraternities that way.

The biggest problem of almost all 4x games is the need/inclination to build everything, everywhere.  That tends to take decision making out of the player's hand.  It requires excessive micromanagement in order to specialize and there's almost no advantage to specialization.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Turns out for some strange reason I actually own Crusade, downloading right now. Thanks for the tips too!
