Buying an MMORPG

rathmarathma Member UncommonPosts: 3,786

I know you get this tons of times but i'm thinking of getting an mmorpg. So far it's basically between EQ and DAoC. Yes, i've read up on both of them but i'd like some advice from the people here who have played the games. And this might be of more help of which one i should get. My interests in MMORPG's are...

 - I like exploring solo and with a group

 - The enviroments should be interesting

 - Fun pvp

 - The game should have lots of people playing

 - A friendly game

 - Good graphics

 - Interesting combat

 - And most of all fun quests

Anybody got an idea which game would fall under some or hopefully most of those categories?

Soloing in EQ sux for the most part when you get higher in level.

     - The enviroments should be interesting

The EQ world is very large and diverse. The dungeons leave something to be desired, but Lost Dungeons of Norrath is pretty cool. Check it out.

     - Fun pvp

PvP in EQ is consentual except if on a PvP server or in an arena. Dueling is the only form in most servers. Pretty lame.

     - The game should have lots of people playing

There is always LOTS of people on EQ sometimes the servers are overcrowded though.

     - A friendly game

You should have no problems finding friends in EQ. Since there are so many people online there always seems to be someone to help. Some of the newbie zones are pretty empty though.

     - Good graphics

DAoC has EQ beat here by looking at screenshots of it, but not by much.

     - Interesting combat

Not sure of DAoC combat is like EQ but EQs is pretty simple depending on the class you have. Casters have more work to do and need to be more focused then a melee class. I have a 56 Warrior and its just click and auto attack.

     - And most of all fun quests

As for quests EQ has MANY quests some of which such as the epic quests are pretty long, and with the addition of LDoN you can get a quest at any time. The LDoN quests are repetitive, and only good for grouping. Most of the rest that I have encountered are fetch type quests.

Anybody got an idea which game would fall under some or hopefully most of those categories?

I posted my answers below your questions above. I have not played DAoC  but been playin EQ forever, so I gave my insights on EQ.

Here are my reactions based on my time with DAOC

     - I like exploring solo and with a group

There were many times I soloed, but group play was much more fun, and better for exp.  By the time I reached level 5 there were groups for me to join.

     - The environments should be interesting

I loved exploring the environments.  I can't remember the name, but there was this massive underground place full of demons, and it was amazing.

     - Fun pvp

The RvR battles are the most fun I have ever had in an MMORPG.

     - The game should have lots of people playing

I have no idea how many people are playing, since I stopped a year ago.  This site should tell you.  http://www.camelotherald.com/index.shtml

     - A friendly game

Like most MMORPGs, there are bad seeds and good seeds.  I joined a guild and met many great people.

     - Good graphics

Sorry, it has been so long sine I have played.  Look at screen shots.

     - Interesting combat

Vs monsters with a group was great.  We would always near death and barely defeat the mob, and then another would come at us.  None of us would die, but it was so exhilarating to be depending on the healer when the next hit could kill me.

     - And most of all fun quests

Ah, the quests.  Most of the time, there are other people trying to complete the quest at the same time.  This made it fun for me because I like to socialize.  I disliked doing quests alone.

I hope this helps, but realize: I stopped playing DAOC before the first expansion came out.  However, if FFXI were not coming out in a month, I would definitely go back to DAOC.

Hmm... I think i would have to go with DAoC. People say the only problem is it's only fun for a couple of months, which is all i'd be playing for, at least until WoW or something comes out.

The fact that it only lasts for a while is true.  I stopped after 4 months.  I recently checked up with my guild, and only recognized two names, the guild leaders.  However, all of my friends had earned their places in the guild's Hall of Honor before leaving.

As far as lasting long. EQ has been good for that. Still playin since March 1999. Not as much as I used to, but the Lost Dungeons of Norrath expansion has lured me back for more.

I have played both and trust me go with EQ. DAoC was fun to start with but got very dull very quick. EQ has a much better lastability about it.

  • rathmarathma Member UncommonPosts: 3,786
Hmm... EQ has been out for so long though and the graphics are more out dated. It's gonna be a tough decision.

I actually preferred the old UI in some cases. It does look rather dated now compared to the next gen games but remember kids, gameplay is king (except when it comes to partners - the most attractive partner is all what counts when you have them draped on your arm as you enter the bar to meet your friends :P Even if they 'charge' $100 per night).

    Regards,
    Riotgirl

P.s. Would like to see the new UI for old time's sake.

"she's like this cleavagey, slut-bomb walking around going 'oh, check me out. i'm wicked cool. i'm five by five'."

"If you think I'm plucky and scrappy and all I need is love, you're in way over your head. I don't have a heart of gold or get nice. There are a lot nicer people coming up. We call them losers."

Thats not only the old ui, thats also the old character models and not much of a background either.  Wish I was home I could post some pictures from my puter but dont have anything here at work.  image

Never know until you try. I saw it and quit playing everything else right away. It's the best unless all you need is killing monsters and collecting stuff. If you like the organize things, fight alongside hundreds of people againts hundreds, just a little interested in WWII, here you can make real impact of the world around you, its got the biggest map of all mmorpgs. Some people has an accaunt only for the community forums :) It's got the best community, and you really can speak with the developers, and give them advices. Just don't ask for elves or lightsaber :)

You might want to take a look at Horizons or Everquest II before you make your choice.  I have played both Everquest and Daoc and while Everquest did hold my interest from the beta through to the beginning of this year, I did finally tire of it.  I have not gone back to EQ since the new expansion, which sounds much more like a game I would like to play, I just don't see myself going back to it for yet another expansion.   I know that EQII will have all the things in LDoN (lost dungeons of Norath EQ's most recent expansion) and some other things.  Anyway, you might want to look at both these games and see if you want to hold out for one of them.  Good luck in your choice.  image

If you want good gfx and lots to explore id check out Anarchy Online shadowlands. It comes w/ the accual game and the notum Wars expansion aswell all in one. You can also d/l the whole thing off fileplanet.

AO has some of the biggest areas iv ever seen a mmorpg to have, there is just too much out there, and the shadowlands expnsion part of the game, is about as big as the game itself.

It also has great character variety. Like, from the very start of making your character it is unique, unlike most mmorpgs where if your the same race and class as someone else, your almost exactly the same, in looks and in skills. On AO its totaly different, mainly because of the "trickle down" skill system they have, wich allows for very unique chars to be made.

AO has 3 diff sides, Omni-Tek, Clans, and Nuetral. 4 Races, and i think now it has 14-15 Proffecions (classes). It also has a level cap of 220 now. And now there is a faction system added along with the shadowlands, wich you can join a faction, i think there are 7. (im not sure though).

I have played EQ and DaoC aswell, and i just didnt get into them. I hated running back to town every time i lvled, so i could train some stupid skills. I hated how basic they were and how the chars all looked almost exactly the same as the next (specialy on daoc...). And how there was almost only one path for each class it seemed. My savage was exactly the same as any other savage pretty much. there were only some slight differences, biggest one being class. Whereas in AO, you could be the same side same race and same class, and even using the same weapon type, and still be alot differnt from eachother.

Also i played eq for 4 months i got bored of it kinda fast. The gms take like more then 2 days to answer my petitions id suggest to prob go with DAOC i heard many good things
