Is it just me or is this site becoming less about MMORPG's?

Members are still here to talk about MMO's, but it seems the new management is taking things in a different direction. The majority of the newsfeed is single player games or lobby multiplayer games. I seriously hope this site is not headed to be just another gaming site, because we have enough of those. I don't know about you, but I am here for MMORPG's, period. I was okay with the "Not So MMO" feature, but that seems to be the norm now.

They've been talking about single player rpg's and "other types" of lobby games for quite some time.

    This isn't new.

Reason? Not a lot of mmorpg's out there so they are covering other types of games that have some relation and that players might find interesting.

Otherwise, which of the multiple mmorpg's that are coming down the pike would you like to talk about?

The genre is a bit stale atm, don't ya think?

As long as I'm seeing all relevant MMORPG news, I'm fine seeing multiplayer game updates as well.

The answer is simple. Mmorpgs are no longer at the top. Very few are releasing.

What is there to speak about? Single player games, mobile and multiplayer/coop games. If there's any game you know about that has not been written an article on here, you can contact them and they will write an article (at least they did when I emailed them).

It's kind of like the History Channel now. The name draws you in to see something historical, and you end up with shows about space aliens and swamp people.

Suzie used to be good at designating the non-mmo content as a compromise, but the new staff is not.

I remember sitting down and binge watching history channel shows when they were actually about history. Girlfriend came home and asked me what I had done all day "watched a show on World War II and another on British planes and now I'm watching a show on tanks!!!!"

Not sure how she felt about all that.

Well although there are always some good defensive arguments, there is a different of looking at it.

If you are setting up a site on gaming because you are passionate about gaming,so be it,name it something gaming like PCGamer for example but not a specific title like mmorpg.com

If you named it mmopg.com we can assume the passion was with mmorpg's or was nothing more than a name that made good business sense but no real passion for gaming at all?

IMO and likely everyone else's,this is merely a business and not a whole lot of passion for the gaming side. However if we just look at some examples a website named MLB.com will ALWAYS 100% be about baseball and guess what Baseball is not #1,it is not #2 ,not even #3 but arguably #4.

When the UFC was an upstart business that almost went under btw,it was still ALWAYS about the UFC,albeit has a section on OTHER mma but is never endorsed ever on the site.

You can pretty much go to any site and it will be what the title says it is about. So we can assume this was just a catchy title and the owners made sure to lock up a few other closely matched titles for business reasons and really not much ado about gaming or mmorpg's.

It is pretty simple to understand.

More clicks = more money to pay bills and staff.

Hence, they branch out as well to cover other genres which i appreciate because MMO genre is slow, if i dont like a new headline, i simply dont click on it.

But i do look at other things at times.

Sort of like how ESPN website now covers e-sports, cricket, EPL, when they used to never do it before.

The problem is when the title isn't clear that it is for some single player game or mobile game and not a mmorpg, and I end up click, click, click, click trying to find out. Which of course may be intended.

Even if they post something just to get folks riled up they get $$ for the clicks. Check any post involving a culture that isn't "american" or a game with a female lead. The post count skyrockets with folks rageposting.

The site started (I believe) as a place to talk about Star Wars Galaxies. It then branched out to cover other mmorpg's.

They have loads of passion considering they don't get paid very much for what they do.

So, they do it, but they don't get paid a lot. Yet they show up every day and do their best to find content and to keep the lights on.

I'm sure this site doesn't make "bank" so there are other ways and other business that could make them a lot more money if it was "just for the money."

Becoming? It has been this way for quite a while and it parallels closely the announcements of new AAA MMORPGs in development and their release.

Just take a look around here. We tend to talk a lot more about upcoming or just launched AAA games. How many of those have been MMORPGs in the past 3 years?

There was a lot to talk about when FFXIV, ESO and Wildstar were developing or had just launched and then there was Archeage and BDO and the EQN announcement. The only truly big MMORPG news we've had since then is the WOW Classic reboot.

I'd have to go pretty far down the list of the games I'm most anticipating to find an MMORPG there and that's just CU for me, another KS MMO with spotty development I'm frankly tired of talking about. And I'm a pretty hardcore MMORPG player who has been playing one or another for 20 years.

If they strictly covered nothing but MMORPG news here, there wouldn't even be any "new management" to manage anything. The site would be deader than a door nail.

Kind of hard to continue to talk about MMORPGs when there aren't that many things that are exciting and new about them.

  • MendelMendel Member LegendaryPosts: 5,609
If you think about it, there *might* be 1 or 2 new MMORPGs released each year.  That's not a lot for a dedicated site to support.  Most of what I seem to do here is read about MMORPGs in development, years ahead of the chance to play these games.  It's a convenient place to keep track of things from a 50,000 foot level.  And to observe on how divided this community really is, both wanna be developers and dedicated players.  The developers provide a tour de force on how not to run a software project/business while the players line up behind conceptual ideas to protect or argue against these ideas and business practices embodied by future games.  Quite an insightful reflection on the psychology of modern players, actually.

I can agree with there being less MMORPG stories lately.  It really seems like every 3rd story is about hardware, chairs, peripherals....... lately.  Not really a bad thing as it is part of gaming, but just something I have noticed a lot more since the management changed.

Most of us play many other games in addition to MMOs...There just isn't much new the past couple of years to talk about in the MMO world.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

As an analogy, should CNN really be covering celebrity gossip? No but they do and they do it because there is nothing else to report. We see what happens when something real happens like Hurricane Dorian. We get saturated with it.

The same would happen here if all they covered was MMO news. We would see saturation coverage of a limited number of titles that get released or updated. They need filler. If you only need MMO coverage it's a pretty good bet anything that has anything to do with MMOs is here, somewhere.

I find MassivelyOP to be a better news source, particularly for existing MMORPGs but their Comments format to be very inferior to this site's forums.

You can't blame the site for the state of the industry. This conversation is also old AF and the editors have spoke on all that already. It is what it is.

Ask yourselves this, WHERE ELSE are you going to go to discuss a fading genre with a bunch of old blokes wearing rose tinted reading glasses? What other sites are you guys discussing dumpster fires like Chronicles of Elyria, religious cult faith based games like Star Citizen, or the steady stream of P2W Slot Machine titles coming out of Korea?

    Exactly.
