Did RK just give a funding announcement (which is quasi required), or did he promise to marry all MMORPG players? I'm confused because there's all this talk about trust and disappointment that doesn't seem warranted.
What a wonderful life of drama you guys all live.
In RK's comments - did you read them - he clearly says that the statement was made to comply with (legal) requirement and was not aimed at gamers in general.
It was also reassuring to know that he understands how things get funded and that this was not a case of: have $2.7M will deliver the world of peoples dreams. Suspect he is realistic enough to know that a lot of projects simply don't make it as well - but that you have be an optimist.
Oh well that solidifies it then. Better just drop everything.
Not yet, the game itself died with a year. Sad but it's kinda why I have little hope for this project. Not sure these old school developers really understand why people enjoyed the games they created back in the day.
It's most likely not gonna ever happen again. Not only was it a different era, but people were much more willing to use their imaginations then they are today. You can throw in all the world building and social gaming structure you want to in a game now a days, people are still gonna want to tear down what you built, PK you and kick you out of a dungeon group because you missed a heal.
The Theory of Fun Raph wrote about all those years ago is an outdated ideal for the mainstream. The few who like building are already playing Second Life and they don't like the idea of going any where else; hell even Linden Lab can't get SL players to even bother with Sansar.
While it's good news he got funding the crappy part of the overall MMORPG situation is that THE western company(Amazon) capable of taking us out of the dark ages has been commandeered into never doing a damn thing for gaming because of their first hires. True visionary MMORPG LEGENDS Koster, McQuaid, Jacobs are all out in the wilds on their own while bureaucrat "devs" locked in their positions at AGS only working to benefit themselves. Imagine what these guys could accomplish under the same roof with proper support/funding and maybe even throw a Brevik in there just for fun.
I hate to say this cause I would've liked a western company to be the one that benefits but maybe Tencent should look into swooping up all these games with actual ideas behind them to add to their launcher.
Amazon will never give their studio the freedom they really need. They force them to use their own engine and AWS for everything. Too many ulterior motives. And making games is hard enough without being hamstrung by that kind of crap.
