Wishing for Lucasarts to do an in-house game would be pretty pointless as it guarantees nothing. So many people have left and moved on to different companies. The same thing happened to DICE. People were like "If DICE is on it itll be awesome". Yeah well, nobody from the original team is working their anymore except like 1 guy who isn't actually involved as much anymore. Look at how that worked out.

With that being said, I keep hoping to see the announcement of a virtual world MMO akin to Ultima Online or SWG with the only payment/monetization being subscription. That means no F2P what-so-ever (give them a free month at most as trial) and absolutely no cash shop.
Dream on. The pay to play subscription model is dead for any new triple A titles unfortunately, unless you talk premium services. Millennials wouldn't pay it, hell they won't even pay for cable TV anymore. Everything has to be a-la-cart, even if you end up paying more in the end.

The best you could hope for is buy to play with the choice of a monthly premium add-on service that includes some form of stipend for currency. The real question would be come how much of the game would be monetized that would need said currency? Even towards the end of SWG they added their SOE station cash as part of the subscription model. The only difference was is you were forced to pay to play the game and the cash stipend was like a bonus.

That's the standard line, but it comes from the industry. And the industry has had an interest in  clones and easy profits selling internet smoke and mirrors.
Not that they aren't trying to also answer to some issues (like power gaps) with less than ideal concepts that still fit into the cloned concepts.
But it isn't working very well.

I am of the opinion that cheaper is not better, as far as cost to the gamer, and that there's a huge market for a great world to play in regardless of pay model as long as it doesn't include cash shops.
    In agreement, but...

Big game studios (AAA) are run by MBA's and investor boards, now. There is no way on Earth they will ever look away from the unlimited spending cash shops offer. That is not in any business's nature, to turn their backs on easy money. As long as we players keep spending like crazy, publishers will keep on the same path. This well will never dry up ;)
You are right that it will never die out. But that doesn't mean someone won't come along and make that great game for a sub at the same time.
After all, what would you rather build, a game with massive population paying subs and lasts for many years (like WoW has done), or a cash shop clone that dies out after (now days) just a few years?

WoW was done and anything with that design will be a recognizable clone.
It's time for a new design. A Sandbox World, deep and polished, and full of adventure and excitement.

Hell, these days the industry is trying to add Sandbox to their clones, but it doesn't quite cut the mustard.
Some day, someone is going to just skip all the twisting of game play and actually make a Sandbox World.

And no, people, SWG was not a true Sandbox World, not with those power gaps.

Someone could come along, but they most likely never will unless someone with less to lose proves it works on a small scale. None of these AAA studios want to be the first to loose millions trying that theory out. It might work for a new tile if you were to say offer a f2p and pay to play version of the same game. But again, who is gonna be the first to make that jump?

WoW and FFXIV are two of the few games that can survive because they were doing it long before the F2P idea really took hold, plus being two very strong IPs allows them to stay in the game.

If you were to tell the folks who play Second Life that they must now pay $12.99 per month to even log in, Linden Lab would lose most of it's playerbase. But why would they do that since they make millions selling Linden dollars? If ESO went back to a sub based model what would happen? If a new Star Wars game launched and was sub based most people would question the real value in paying for something that is free on another title (SWOTOR). People will always take the path of least resistance, and for some apparently the sub based model is a pay wall.

Tiller, great things happen only when someone has the courage to do what everyone else says can't be done exactly because of that thinking.
Back in the day, everyone else was afraid to do what WoW did. They all stood back and watched with interest. But none of them would have done it. And the key point was the amount of money Blizzard spent in production.

Nothing ever really changes. Only the faces.

Anything related to a current issue so that the newly and situationally woke kids can beam righteousness from their keyboards.
Agreed, self righteous hypocrisy never goes out of style.

On an  unrelated note I looked at the bottom of my recently acquired Logitec vertical mouse and its stamped with "Made in China."

Maybe I should wack it with a hammer, you know, to show solidarity and all?

     :D
Unfortunately you are correct, perhaps the only way this can really be addressed, is via military intervention. But who am i kidding, the lives of people in Hong Kong aren't worth that are they.
Last I checked there were more murders in my city this week than in hong kong in the past year. The lives of HK are doing just fine.

Wow, you really must be living under a rock to make a statement like that.
You must be living under a rock if you don't realize he is correct.  HK needs freedom, but they have time to work on that. Ahh to be young again.

Anyway, I think I will go read about bikes, on my smartphone..., made in China, with African Rare earth metals mined by child slaves, while I drink my coffee from Columbia, also harvested on the backs of near slave labor. Or maybe I will enjoy some Dole pineapple that is again harvested by damn near slave labor right here in the good ol US of A.

Pick which cause you're gonna go fix there superhero, ima go drink my coffee.
I don't like the way you worded it but I can't say your wrong
I do not like that I am close to accurate. :(

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

Blizzard losing more than half their player base due to players growing some balls and boycotting them for bending over the sink for China.
They and every other company ever. Companies follow the laws of the countries they operate in. What else did you expect ?

For those of you who open up this site first thing in the morning and scroll through news items, what do you hope to find? Hardware reviews about the $300 microphones? Not so MMO reviews on the latest JRPG? Some new key giveaway for a temporary item from some F2P game you've never heard of? Star Citizen launch date? WoW goes F2p? Next FFXIV expansion, or do you just find it fun to come here and banter?

Mine would be - LucasFilm games working on new open-world sandbox MMORPG based on Star Wars IP in-house.

This may seem like a ******5230 question I know, and this is in no way a diss on this sites content; really I'm just curious as to what keeps everyone coming back here as I feel we are all waiting for some big news item to drop that never seems to come.

    Thats a great question.

for myself i hope to see that maybe WB has opened a official asherons call server. Then i hope that maybe they are announcing AC 3. then after that doesnt happen i hope EA has lost the rights to star wars so maybe we can get a decent game.

then after that i hope EA loses warhammer so maybe we can get that to? then after all of that i pray for a star gate MMO because i love the stargate franchise. also i love battelstar so i hope for that game to.

all of that goes through my head in .5 seconds then i look at the update for star citizen and think will i be alive when this comes out?

Stand Stone Games buys Vanguard SOH and begins updating graphics and and remasters the original work as a non instance game world !
    1. SOE aint selling. Duh.

    2. Graphics update ? Wtf ? You dont play MMOs for top notch graphics !
not even about selling it, is anyone even paying for the copyright at this point... get the rights, will negotiate the terms of the game code or simply create a new game based on the core idea .
SOE doesnt sell because it would create a competition especially to their EQ2.

And I dont think creating a new game would qualify for the term "simply".

Also I wouldnt be interested in any new game having the copyright for Vanguard. Thats a complete non-issue to me. There is nothing special about the gameworld of Vanguard. Its really just another generic classic fantasy setting with elves, dwarves, wizards etc. Just like TES or WoW.

Well, it had a lot more races than TES and WoW. And it was much larger. But still, that wasnt the core advantage of Vanguard to me.

The great thing about Vanguard was that they tried to make "classes done right", had a complex combat system that made even killing trash mobs fun (well, as much as thats even possible to do), had no instancing (or phasing or anything of that sort), had a very complex crafting sphere (with its own classes, stats, skills, gears, tools, utilities, recipes, ingredients, and an own crafting game), and also had diplomacy (I hate card games thats why I didnt liked that one too much though once you had the seven or so cards you had to have it was really very easy).
