Levels of effort and dedication put in.  Should be fairly simple to align yourself with a category.

Min/Maxer  - Everything they can do to tweet their character.  Addon's, datasheets, and all the extra effort to get their gear just right.  Including training dummy sessions to get their dps layout perfected.

Maxer - Works hard to find the next group to get even better gear.  Will download an additional addon if it's not too confusing.  Will do a training dummy session a couple of times after getting a few new pieces of gear.

Dedicated Raider - Will always be ready for raids and will download the required addon's.  Will take advice from Min/Maxer.  Will do training dummy once or twice.

Raider - Will be mostly ready for raids.  Addons if they are required and someone walks them though doing it.  Wants the best gear, and will do some extra work for it.

Group Hero - Will have the easiest/most common addon.  Know's every dungeon and the best and quickest way through them.  Tells people how to spec their class.

LFG - Wants to get the best gear but have everyone else do most of the work and hopes for the lucky /ran 100.  Will stop and examine people and ask them where they got their gear.  Will run to the training dummy after each new piece of gear.

Adventurer - Fishing is maxed out.  Enjoys running around and just playing.  Will tell the Group Hero "Awesome! Thanks" after receiving unsolicited "advice".  While in a group, "casually" out dps's everyone and just giggles about it.

Noob - Asks for help on their third character rebuild.  Often seen listening intently to Group Hero.  Wants to know how to fish.  Wants to know where to find trainer.  Wants you to know they've been playing MMO's for 18 years.

Twink - Dedicated Raiders alt or friend.  Plays the class horribly but has good numbers thanks to OP gear.  Always found at or near the training dummy and will always "accidentally" /ooc [combat parse]

Average Joe:  Wants to improve his character and learn to play it better, but is usually not going to invest crazy amounts of time or effort. Leans more toward the casual side. Solos, groups up, occasionally raids when a spot opens. Is not trying to prove his manhood or his existential worth. Just playing a video game.

Personally I'm a raider on my main and a Twink on my alts.  Even the "accidental" /ooc spam.  I know, I hate myself sometimes too.

Jaded gamer: Genre has passed you by.  Loved an old flawed/changed MMORPG you can no longer play.  Future and current games are too far fetched or different from what you like. Bounces around genre and haunts forums shaking his cane at young whipper snappers.

I min/max the weakest thing with the playstyle I enjoy.  I think that cancels itself out.

In GW, I played the supports from the one considered most useless then tried them all till I reached the OP one.  It really showed me just how OP the OP one was.  And I used that OP chrono to carry even the worst groups in Group Hero fashion.  "Healer? We dont need a healer! Ill heal! Too much incoming damage? Forget it ill aegis! We need more damage? We traded in the healer for more damage and Ive got all the buffs, baby! Mechanics? In CM? Ill take it.  Ill take it all!"

It was awesome I felt like a support god.

Story and lore addict adventurer, with a pinch of min/maxer (not for the sheer numbers, but for finding unique and fun combinations) and a teaspoon of group hero (like to know my games inside out).

Im usually a lone wolf type when I play MMO's but Im doing content that requires a group, I always try to be support. If a party member is down I do my best to bring them back as quick as possible.

I'm a Concept Player. When I create a character, I have a concept in mind. This means I may not have the best gear, but rather the weapon and armor I envision for that character.

Otherwise, I'm much like Amanthe's Average Joe, though raiding was much too chaotic for me when I tried it in WoW. I don't spend excess time "becoming the best", but try to do as well as I can within the time I am having fun playing the game ;)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I'm an above average healer but I cannot tank at all. I suck at that. Even though I can heal well I'm not prepared to log on and do insane grinding for money and materials to raid. So definitely not a raider.

I am also an adventurer because stuff like housing, fishing and other non combat stuff interest me greatly and I love to craft. I love it when I can craft useful things and I absolutely love carpentry and crafts that enable you to decorate a house.

So Adventurer I guess is my type.

    In game,
I'm an adventurer that loves to take things slow.  Loves to group constantly even if it means slow leveling to find such groups. Must 100% every dungeon at all cost.

Often play healer, but getting away from that with the speed running nature of mmorpg's as of late..... Hate tanking... So I guess DPS.

I usually don't craft until I've played a game several times, then play the game even slower.

Naw, you are an Average Joe for sure....but perhaps we should rename it to Regular Joe, because after all, who wants to be just "average."

I don't think I fit any of them, but the closest I come is min/maxer I guess.

My personal goal in any MMO is to learn to play my character to perfection. I take a lot of pleasure out of learning the mechanics and understanding every detail of the game, then using that knowledge to achieve the best performance I can.

I test out my progression by playing the hardest content the game has to offer - generally raiding and pvp. These are usually the only scenarios where my personal skill is actually put to the test and that challenge is enjoyable for me. However, this is only possible in games where player skill is important. The more the focus shifts towards gear/levels, the less I care and I'll probably quit. It's also only possible when the combat mechanics are deep - if the combat is shallow, like all action games, then it is too easy to master the combat and I'll be bored.

I also have social goals in MMOs. I like playing with other people, it is an extra layer of challenge. I may be able to play my character perfectly solo, but can I do the same in groups? Can I step up and become a leader, giving myself extra challenge there? This is why I like becoming deeply involved with guilds and the wider server community. There is nothing quite like being in sync with a bunch of other people, everyone operating at peak performance and in total harmony with one another. That's only possible if you're willing to put in lots of effort with the same bunch of people, but when you achieve it its great! You don't even have to be "serious" to achieve this - the amount of laughter and jokes during a typical raid or pvp session is very high.

Probably just Raider. If there was an option for "Getting good enough gear to go PvP" I would probably choose that as I love PvP and tend to focus on that.

Depends on how my day at work went.

Sometimes I just want to kill something; sometimes I just want to chill out and either gather or craft; and somedays I just want to do something interesting so I don't play MMOs at all.

MMOs are a time sink to relax and escape the job, not be the job.
