Hey guys,
Not the first time I post with a question regarding my next game. And the community here has always been extremely helpful.
I started a year ago with Anarchy. First experience. Stopped it pretty fast because my computer at the time was weak, and I didn't see any fun in going from a dungeon mission to the next.
Then came EVE. The only game I could truly play with my computer. I'm a very casual gamer because I'm in investment banking and seldom have time off... So EVE was just perfect because no grinding, and I just developed myself in the conveying of equipment at high margin through ganked space. Great fun. However, I got a new computer, and was a bit tired of the endless hours spent looking at my ship warping around.
Then I moved to WoW. Good experience at first. But now, I have a moderately high level character and I'm tired of grinding. I see no purpose in raids, high level instances to get equipment, or cash farming to get a greater mount.
And now I'm stuck. I wish there were a game without purpose like Eve in a fantasy world. When I say without purpose, I mean by that you don't have a pre-set path and you can become whatever you want to become. In EVE, I wasn't a power gamer with tons of isks, but I was a niche expert in my guild for a specific type of trade runs, and I loved it. I considered a number of other games but I'm not sure I'll like them based on the feedback in these forums. It's like: imagine a fantasy game where the hardcore gamers would be kings of an entire land, but as a casual gamer I could play for months enjoying being the chief of a village.
Is there anything you could suggest ? The EVE fanatics who play a lot will probably know what I'm talking about, but since it's not the most popular game, I'm thinking I should get the opinion from the general discussion...
I know my question is not super clear. But if you have any suggestions.

there really aren't any fantasy games out there without a purpose. the thing closest I can think of, is Roma Victor coming out. It's historical sort of, they're still going to incorporate an underworld you have to get out of when you die, based on mythology of some sort, which is still cool. complete historical accuracy would be fairly dull. It will be a rough world (open PVP, open looting of corpses) but it might have the open endedness you're looking for in the future.

I know what you mean man.... I've played em all and I find myself constantly switching between games from one month to the next....
I've found that's the only way to keep my games fresh....
Here, check out my Xfire...
See? And that list is only a few months old, and will probaly get a lot bigger in the winter when I don't work.... (That's right, I don't work 5 months a year, HA!)
So, I agree, no one game can seem to be my bread and my butter....
Give a try to MxO, it has all the features of a good game and may be played casual at will.
He's not asking about features, or Casual/Hardcore etc...
Its about getting a self-made purpose and the ability to be good at something requiring some brains (rather than randome button mashing)
I agree - i LOVE eve, but cant really play anymore due to time constraints.
WoW was fun, but everyone going through basically the same things - and higher level players will destroy any number of lower level players (unlike eve where a day1 player can make a real difference in team combat)
But Wow is MUCH easier to get into, and is more fun with the avatars, combat is also more exciting and last longer that most eve combat.
If wow had the ability to conquer land - build houses/castles/farms etc - had trade between towns rather than that damned Auction House. If you could do things like train wild animals to be pets (for general use.. ie, non combat pets) or breed animals, or make more things with crafting skills, or ANYTHING other than the pre-defined quests.
I would love a "eve-like" game set in a WoW world
But no, there is nothing like that right now, sadly.
To be good at something requiring some brains requires some distinctive features, I admit I have been too succinct.
MxO is deeper than WoW, you can experiment any template at will with the same char, this is important for those who never have a definitive choice.
Eve is unique and cannot be compared to any mmorpg;I would love a "eve-like" game set in a WoW world too
Sorry, I don't normally do this but i will have to stop you right there. MxO is one of, if not THE worst MMO ever. It's just so broken in so many ways i don't even no where to begin.
Waste your money on this game at your own peril.

Hmmm the only thing that comes close to what you're talking about on the Fantasy side is either UO or AC1... They're the two most open ended Fantasy MMO's available. EQ2 isn't bad but at higher levels you'll be raiding and grouping more than in WoW and that doesn't sound your style.
There are a BUNCH in development but guessing which one(s) will make it to release is russian roulette at this point. Irith seems a lot like what you're looking for and it's in open beta. I haven't tried it yet but I DL'd the beta last night in case I find time and have the urge to try it out.
Star Wars Galaxies would fit you as well but you specifically said Fantasy so I won't recommend that one.
