Ok for those of you who dont know, BF2 is Battle Field 2 Modern Combat. In this installement of the Battle Field line you play either the American, The Middle Eastern Coalition or the Chinese. Unlike any other FPS I have played you earn points, like exp points for various things in the game. These points translate into Rank. At Lance Corporal and higher you gain a new weapon for each rank. Also with higher ranks come a better chance to be your teams commander for the map being played. While it is obviously a FPS it also has alot of basic elements of an MMO, yes my clan will skin me if they heard me say that, but for me its still true.
Its a great game, a good change from the MMOs I have played. Havent been able to play WoW in 2 weeks... Just lost interest.

While I certainly don't think that BF2 is in any way an MMO, I really do look at it as a great evolution to the classic FPS. I can take it or leave it, it's fun but not really my thing, my boyfriend (an avid MMO player) absolutely loves it and it's taken over much of his SWG/EQ2 time. (And "me" time too but apparently I'm dispensable )
As he's discribed to me, BF2 carries with it many of the addictive properties that we all get so hooked on from MMO's. The point system is certainly similar to gained exp, the pay offs of better gear are there, as well as holding better positions within the community.
If nothing else, it's a step towards blurring the line between the differences of MMO's and FPS's.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
As Shae said, its really still a traditional FPS with mmo elements added to it.
The primary thing they did right was while you get upgraded weapons with ranks they are not vastly more overpowering then their origional counterpart.
BF2 is a very good game, There are some aspects I dislike such as helos are simply far too easy to use but all in all minor complaints. I think the real gold with this game will be the mod community, I know I am involved with several and I am aware of a fair number more that are going to give all types of gameplay the game.
Your a better man than I am if you think Flying is easy Jets are right out the door, I can take off and even if no one is shooting at me I crash within 15-30 secs. Helos I can take off and keep in the air but I can do a CP nor land for the most part lol. I know the next patch they are making it so you CANT CP while inside ANY vehicles. You have to get out to get the CP and then pray someone doesnt steal your ride.
My concern with MODs is if they are going to allow Servers that use MODs to be ranked. Not much point in playing on an Unranked server IMO.
Your right about the weapons, its a trade off. If you Unlock the G3 you lose the Assualts Grenade Launcher but still get hand thown grenades. If you Unlock the PKM you gain more damage but lose some accuracy, not like the support weapon was accurate to begin with but....
I like that Rank DOES mean something but even a guy with 2,000,000 points (Cant remember the rank) doesnt have a huge advantage over the lowly PFC with 500 points.

Hmmm... Sounds like BF2 is borrowing several ideas from PlanetSide with a twist. The idea of gaining rank affecting what weapons you can use, etc, was introduced to the MMOFPS with PlanetSide. It's a good concept and gives you a feeling of accomplishment.
I am hoping this is a sign of things to come in the MMOFPS genre.

As I've said before, I'd have no problem with BF2, Counterstrike, Diablo II, NWN, and other popular online games being listed at this site.
It has two basic element of character development. Gaining experience and unlocking a weapon due to that experience. Character development isn't something specific to MMOGs. Some old Quake mods had character development. There was a WarCraft III mod for CounterStrike with more character development than BF2.
BF2 is a FPS with a persistent character profile and statistic tracking. The only character development, other than xp, is the ability to unlock weapons. Anyone can be a commander from the start of the game, and your rank only determines if you are able to steal the ability to command from someone else at the beginning of the round.
BTW, I am great at fighter pilot but haven't practiced on the helicopter much lately. I enjoy playing Support and have the 2nd machine gun unlocked. You have to play a TON to get the next rank. Unfortunately the ranking is way too exploitable.

I thought WWII Online was the first game to introduce ranks and getting new weapons. Anyway BF2 does not have a persistant world and 64 players isn't what I consider to be "massively". I play medic and love the L85A1. In-game name is Ermac28.

WWIIOL first
BF2 is definately becoming one of my favorite games. Personaly, I hope it never evolves beyond what it currently is. The game offers a nice alternative to the more involved MMO environment.
Btw, flying helicopters upside-down ftw!!

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
BF2 is in no way a MMO. 64 or 128 players per map is hardly massive. Its a shoebox fragfest with ranks. WWIIOL and PS are MMOFPS or MMOWarSims
DUDE!!! I just picked up BF2 last weekend, and it rocks, but I had no idea what the benefits of a ranked server was... Unlock weapons? Gain experience? Develop my character? MY GOD!!!
