This article seems silly to me... a guy with 20 years worth of thoughts and ideas? Ok? You don’t have 20 years of already developed content just waiting to be released. We can all sit around and think of ideas.

Totally agree.  Ideas are easy, implementation is the thing.  Optimism at its finest.

On the other hand, a 20 year plan may be the only way they're going to get rid of all those lifetime memberships that Turbine sold.

I really think there's enough content for now. You can easily spend 1000 hours on each class. If only they'd spend a year or two upgrading to or leaping to a new engine and increase the overall graphical fidelity.

I'd love to have a peek into their notes... there could be some interesting storylines in those areas, but I hope the 20 years ain't 6 months of story, and 19.5 years of filler fetch and kill quests :)

This is sad news, if this game will survive this long ( no offense to the people who are still playing it ).

I would rather see a new LoTR MMo then see this around for this long.

But do you have 20 years of revenue and financing to produce those ideas?

Amazon is from what I hear, making an lotr game, I don't remember if it's an mmo though.

Hey, I’ll stick around for another 20. Would love a UI update though.

OT, I think this article has more to do with the idea that since the ring has been destroyed they might be running out of ideas soon. This is just their way of saying: Nope.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

Well, what about the people whose job is it to develop this? I'm sure, if they love their coworkers and what they do, they will want it to last as long as they can.

I hope it lasts for 30 years.

Having said THAT there isn't anything stopping other developers from making another Lord of the Rings mmorpg if they wanted to. As was mentioned, Amazon is making some "sort" of Lord of the Rings "mmo" though it's yet to be determined what that will actually look like.

While I like Lord of the Rings Online (even though I do have criticisms) I do hope another one comes along. Maybe with an aesthetic that is more along the lines of the Shadow of Mordor games. At least games that feel a bit better aesthetically.

Ah man such a lovely game lorewise and community wise.

I'd love to go back but I'm sure there's so much stuff that's changed it'll take me ages to learn everything again.
That's part of the fun though I guess.

Guess I'll download the client and dabble with it when I feel like it.

No you wouldn't, or you would be playing this. No LOTR MMO is going to do the content as much justice as this one does. If you want Warcraft set in a LOTR universe sure.....but not if you want real Tolkien.

Not worse, just the same bad, every time... remember Lagtrev, or the initial mess of warsteeds, etc.?

The pattern looks more like: content update, lag and perf.issues, they iron it out slowly in the following months, new content update, lag and perf.issues, they iron it out slowly, rinse and repeat. Though the 64bit client helped a lot last time.

A weird pattern, considered there's Bullroarer and players test a lot before every update... sure, it doesn't have the load of the live servers.
This year they did a stress test on BR, which was a good idea imo.

    What?

The irony. I Open Beta'ed LOTRO and it was WoW set in LOTR (wannabe) universe. I have no idea how the game is this days, but for me was enough to not bother with it anymore.

If you think this LOTR MMO is doing justice to the..real Tolkien story, then we two have very, very different tastes regarding the LOTR settings, story, content, etc.

..and most disagree with you on this one anyway. Unless you believe that .. some thousands or tens of thousands of players means success.

LOTR came in a time when everyone and his cat, tried to copy WoW and this is exactly what they did, sadly.

If you enjoy the game, then that's good for you. But for me and many others, we expected something else back when this game released, and now .. me and yes, many others, we expect a solid new MMO based on LOTR settings which will truly do justice to the story.

I'm sorry, but this is absolutely false. I am not the biggest fan of this game, and have tried to get into it repeatedly to no avail. With that being said, your remarks are nonsense and show a lack of knowledge on the topic. LOTRO follows the lore, stories, and books to the series fantastically. That is the single greatest thing the game does. I tried recently to get into the game, and was reading the hobit as I went through it. The game felt and acted as the book did. The game does NOT act as the movie does at times though. This is because the game was designed to be a following the books, and Tolkiens direct work.

The game lacks, and is often criticized in regards to its dated gameplay. The combat is a little clunky, the spells need updating, the UI is outdated, and some individuals find the graphics to e displeasing. I'm not sure where you got your information, but you need to reassess it.

You are so wrong on every level it just further proves to me you don't know wtf you are talking about. LOTRO only has ONE thing going for it, and it is the story telling and dedication to staying true to Tolkien. You signing up for beta means absolutely nothing. You saying I am the only one who thinks this makes me believe you live under a rock. The internet is crawling with people who would say the same thing. It is literally the ONLY reason this game still exists.

"We ran the risk of going too far with it, but we have to constantly balance between being risk-averse and going all out"

That is a joke of a comment. SSG went all out P2W years ago with the Rise of Isengard xpac(Formerly known as Turbine but same staff). That was the year Lotro died for me and I was with it from alpha testing all the way until that point. Its a shame SSG/Turbine gave in to the greed and desperation.

Wrong, he was right in that the Tolkien estate constantly evaluate their contract year to year especially with the new Tolkien mmo being made for them by a different company.

To be fair, there's room for both of these mmos since the Amazon one is set in the First Age, or maybe even earlier.
