Im just wondering if there is any kind of solo content in FFXI? If so what kind of content is there to be soloed.
thanks
Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online

lvl 1-10 is soloable....thats about it. FFXI is a very VERY group oriented game.
Does this mean that past level 10 you can't do ANYTHING solo?
Like, just wander around by yourself and kill solo mobs,etc....???
Or do the areas get more difficult mobs that can't be killed solo???
I've been reading the FF11 forums, cuz for some reason I want to get back to it. I only played it for 3 weeks when I bought it last year.
Have there been any/if at all improvements?
I left because I noticed the prices on some basic items were outrageous: a small health potion was like, 300-400 gil!! and I wasn't even getting any gil from mobs to begin with!!
That pretty much put me off. And the fact there was NO uniqeness to your character: everything and everyone looks the same! That just strikes me as the dumbest thing ever, considering it's a game where there are thousands of players!! Not exactly a "hardcore" reason to stop playing, but I kept finding it harder and harder to want to log in. Plus I prolly doomed myself by reading a lot of the negative posts in most forums about the game.
I wouldn't mind starting over again, if I knew that I could actually play solo and wander around the world past level 10....is that even possible? In WoW you can take off and explore the world even at beginner levels. Also, I don't, if ever, group with people. Long story to explain that so I wont.
Please advise!
Monsters are too difficult to kill and/or take insane amount of time (killing + downtime + avoiding to die). Remmember that you loose a crazy amount of xp if you happen to die. Crystals for crafting only drop from monsters that give xp which means you cant get those solo. (Beastmasters can kill on there own BUT you get little xp & takes forever to get a level & the pet you charm attacks you when effect wears off).
The problem is also that you MUST have certain jobs in the team & almost every job is a damage dealer which means waiting for 4 hours or more to get into a team with all the correct jobs is not uncommon in higher levels (or for some DAYS...).
Everything is MORE expensive, farmers ruined the economy a long time ago.
You might be able to explore some with a chocobo but its on a timer & you need to get to the city (Juno) as well (& do a stupid quest to get it).
FFXI could have been great but EVERYTHING is a timesink and/or has a huge risk (die once at level 20+ & thats 2-6 hours of work down the drain, I "only" got to level 25 darkknight & got feed up with the xp system ,the horrible crafting system , the crashed economy & that you must have a team to do anything).
well, thanks for the reply. I think that defintely means that I WONT be re-subscribing.
I wanted it to be my "one" game back last year when I bought it, but I was SO dissapointed I couldn't even play it past the first free month.
Well, there's always FF12 to look forward to at least! (I think I was jonesing for a FF fix when I replied to the parent post..hehe).
Oh well.
Well, you can certainly kill mobs if they're weak enough. But as you get higher in level, it gets harder and harder to kill mobs that earn worthwhile, or even any, experience. However, Square a few weeks ago eased up a bit and made it easier to earn exp from relatively weak mobs. Your serious exping will still be in groups unless you're beastmaster, though. And just about all the serious content--big time quests, instanced monsters, and so on--that all requires groups.
Well, nobody uses them because of that fact. You party with a white mage and his healing magic keeps you afloat. It works (and is another aspect of the group orientation of the game).
Ah, you didn't understand how to make money off the mobs. Not surprising, a lot of newbies in FFXI don't; it's one of the bigger causes of frustration. Only beastmen drop gil, and they don't really drop enough to matter.
Rule 1: Get Signet from the gate guard. While the Signet enchantment is on you, mobs that earn exp will drop crystals. This is a major part of your loot.
Rule 2: Everything that drops from mobs is worth something. Somebody somewhere will want it. Take it to the Auction House and sell it there. NEVER EVER SELL YOUR LOOT TO THE NPC MERCHANTS. They will pay you maybe 1/5 of what another player on the Auction House would've paid you. 1/10 if it's crystals. Use the price history feature. Select bid and find the item you're looking to sell. You can call up the last ten transactions on that item, when they happened, and who sold it to whom. The bid interface will also tell you how many of that item are currently awaiting sale. This information is invaluable in setting your own price when you sell your item.
The game has to support the PS2 client, which has spawned unfortunate limitations. The limited character designs is one of them. No question, it's not a good thing (well, nothing's perfect).
Your last statement convinces me that FFXI is probably not for you. FFXI is *very* group oriented. There's only one class that can play solo most of the time, beastmaster. And it's an advanced class; you'll have to make 30 in one of the six base classes before you can run the quest to unlock it. And even beastmasters have to group sometimes. If you are dead set on not playing in groups, I'd have to advise against FFXI.

Yes, I understand this is true (I only started a few months ago).
This I'll have to disagree with. The economy is *not* ruined, because, as you noted, *everything* is more expensive. No matter what you do to make gil, it's almost certain you do it by obtaining items to sell to other players. You pay more to get stuff (unless you're buying from an NPC), but you get paid more when you sell your stuff. It all evens out.
You also have to be level 20 (and Jeuno can be hard to get to at that level).
Bull. At level 20, you lose 460 exp when you die. 414 if you have the experience moghancement, 345 if you get a raise. That's, at most, three mobs in a proper experience party. You've lost 10 minutes work, 20 minutes if your exp party is horribly slow.
I rather like the crafting system, and the economy, honestly, does fairly well as far as I can tell. But it's a matter of taste, and I can't deny the need for teams (which I like, actually). Hope you find something out there you like.
