For a 40 dollar entry fee it’s cheaper then SC to check out and will probably have more completed game loops, mechanics and things to do and will come out much sooner.
You like it or not, the MMO genre biggest problem is the opposite of what SC is doing, having most developers milking the same old tired formula for well over a decade now. Release dates trumping ambition to get cheaper budgets, aka what just happened with New World, continuing to haunt the titles that have been releasing.
And you guys do what? Applaud this reality? Yes of course you do because booo SC amiright?
I’m simply pointing out that cost of entry is cheaper then SC which you fans love to do whenever the hundred or thousand dollar ships are brought up. So for 40 bucks you can check out a new mmo. Will it be any good? Who knows but at least it doesn’t have predatory business practices and it’s up front about what it’s selling.

The entry fee of SC is around, the same 40$, nothing else is required, you don't need to buy them to play with them, you don't even to own them in-game via the avaiable mechanics to play within them as far multi-crew goes.
Also if I recall correctly, The New World had a gold cash store on the pre-alpha tests. Can be confusing that with another upcoming MMO, they all on NDA so I shouldn't even be saying stuff owo

The entry fee for SC is 45. Let’s not start trying to generalize it when Erillion is fond of reminding everyone here it’s 45 dollars.
And you’re still trying to make SC sound better then it is by overlooking things by saying it’s fine as long as you know someone who has that ship and they let you use it. Someone still had to drop hundreds or thousands in the cash shop.
Not sure why you’re bringing up about the new world might have had a cash shop in pre alpha. Is this where you try and justify SC’s cash shop by saying another game has it so it’s ok?

What matters is YOUR experience as far as you playing if you don't buy X or Y ship. The Argo multi-crew mining ship is meant for parties of players mining together, so the mechanic of SC is not linear "you just play X if you own Y ship".
Also, you said about "predatory business practices", a pre-alpha of a game that is funded by a major company that implements the cash shop on the first initial testing, that not about helping the dev, unlike titles where their budget comes from players.

it is when they have had 300 million given to them and they are probably further away from releasing something than when they only had 3 million....

Money is sinking back into development, sustaining a large development team that wagers alone are pretty much what they crowdfund per year.
A different story from those unreleased games cashing in big, for the sake of profit, during development.
Hell, Fortnite was selling tons of loot boxes for years before the whole trendy BR during its alpha and nobody cared, they weren't funding development Epic Games wasn't funding to pay the wages of their employees, that yes is predatory, but yeah I know boo SC blah blah.
It was as low as 20 $ before Christmas at one point in the crowdfunding campaign.
Have fun
If I recall, you could get it free with the purchase of a video card too. A video card that would probably struggle to run the game now, much less in the nebulous future 'release'.
Also, I once bought a synthesizer for $100, one that now regularly sells for $20k. So?
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

So if you’re the type of player who wants to play solo or you don’t have enough time to meet up with everyone/wait for everyone to log in then what are you going to do? If you don’t have the ship or aren’t willing to drop a couple of hundred then you’re SOL.
A cash shop with loot boxes is just as predatory as SC’s cash shop where they create artificial demand or fomo and their prices can be hundreds of times higher then a loot box.

The solo play type of ships are also the most reachable in-game anyway, the expensive ass stuff is obvious the multi-crew/capitals, that should not be the goal of a solo player as reduced efficiency.
"is just as", that's a very delusional statement, loot boxes have drained far more money from people on smaller transactions at a time on literal 0-cost money for the company, SC is upfront about what you're getting and its cost, and it doesn't require it for starters as I said.

The solo stuff is still around the same price of a single player game if not a bit more depending on what you are buying and if you consider deluxe editions of games (freelancer max or cutlass black).
How is it a delusional statement? Yes loot boxes are the devil but SC isn’t that far off. They sometimes only sell limited quantities to create artificial demand, they can change specs whenever they want and you’re pooched if you don’t like the changes and the whole BUY NOW! Cause we will raise the prices later! To again force people into buying right away

The game has renting mechanics to play with ships on the various types of play professions without having a daunting grind to get the upfront currency. It's actually a good solution because on MMOs it's nothing new having to grind for months and months in a loop for gear and gear upgrades.
And to me it is delusional, the price best buying early on is the standard thing of crowdfunding and even early access type of game, it's pretty standard marketing to me nothing evil, people know what they are buying, people are told the disclaimers that they do not need to and can play for it, predatory here would be the pressure to buy something that will only be sold for cash during a limited time, and hell there are no lack of MMOs that check that box.

With 300 USD to 35K for ships and they rent them to. Trying to grab as much cash as they can before they get shut down for being con men. So sad....
Did what they add this year make it 'better' Or more importantly ~50 million dollars better?
They have 500+ people working on this, they have Amazon 'fixing' their engine for them. Why in the hell cant they utilize the money people are still willing to throw at this mess better?
it ALL comes down to the ORIGINAL point all the naysayers had...Chris Roberts, and his complete and utter inability to manage money or finish a project he is in charge of.
So no matter what the white knights and paid operatives want to claim THAT simple point is and has been proven 100% accurate with out a single defense. No matter how much spin or deflection you want to make you have a 3.8 'release' that has had over 225 million put into it. If anyone can claim with a straight face that a monkey in a basement couldnt come up with a better result for the same amount of money then theyre not being objective whatsoever.
Better this year? A valid question. $50M better? Do you ask yourself how much a game costs before you decide to play it / buy it? What people care about is when will it release - in a state that they deem playable. Which varies by individual.
500+ people. And? Take 2 said they had "everyone" working on RDR2 - assuming the kept 500 on other stuff that would be 2,000+. Again: and?
Amazon fixing "their" engine? Its Amazon's engine but absolutely. What a good management decision to move to Lumberyard! You did mean that as praise yes?
CR not being able to manage money and finish a project? Not sure how he kept being hired for all those films then. Even if you discount the gaming experience. That aside I believe that very few individuals deserve all the blame or all the credit for work done by a team. Subject to decisions being made at management levels above them that they have - check out Mark Jacobs comments about releasing WAR, deciding to sell Mythic to EA etc. People are rarely in "control" of their destiny.
Anyway I await your link to your basement epic. Pretty sure you have said this before and that it is so trivial a college kid could do it. Still no link though.

Isnt renting based on real time and not on time spent in the game? So you could rent, something comes up and you have to log off and your rental expires before you could get back on or be severely reduced in time.
People don’t know what they are buying. CI reserves the right to change anything they want and you have no say about it. If you’re outside of the refund period then you are also out of luck.
And CI does pressure people to buy things for cash. They routinely sell ships for cheaper if you use cash instead of in store credit and I believe they have limited some ships sales to cash only and you’d better hurry only a limited amount are for sale.

The first iteration is a time period, tho this could likely be tweaked into game-time to be easier to balance. As it is still, the earning rates make it easy enough to maintain the rented ship while still cashing in a profit.
The details of stats, some visual updates, nothing completely beyond what was the concept, and there is still the melt option in the case someone no longer wants it.
Some people were pretty much buying every new ship for free just with the melts into credit and so on, as the point of the pledges is to actually fund the ongoing development the changes made are not that unreasonable. Limited ships were just for the biggest capitals the demand is far beyond the availability of a few dozen per year, there was a promise not let the biggest ships pledges openly available, this is why the Bengal was never sold.

So we are trying to pass off a first iteration as an excuse for ship prices when we have no idea where it’s going to end up? Gotcha.
best example I can think of is the khartu-al where they removed something like 2/3 of the guns and removed the 2nd seat. And being able to melt down a ship for something else doesn’t excuse the fact that you can’t get a refund so you’re out of luck if they finally make the ship you bought flyable after a few years and it’s nothing like you paid for.
How is that the people’s fault? CI allowed melting because they are too cheap to allow refunds so if people want to melt a ship and get store credit for the exact amount they paid why is CI punishing the fans who gave them money in the first place by saying sorry we only accept your new money, your old money is useless to us as we already funnelled it through our 20 shell companies

The first iteration is what is in-game, it is relevant to the ship prices in-game that are an overall reflection anyway.
The stats were always disclaimed, even after the ships are implemented the game still has to face major balance changes as it is obvious with any online game of this sort, so stats will change and that's given, X weapon-grade might no longer work on Y ship, etc... The changes do retain what the ship is and what it is about, now obviously there can't be a commitment with details without lockdown the game from any relevant balance changes, that'd be insane.
They allow melting because on crowdfunding as this the money pledged is earned, if you don't know what that is it means that the money is used on the operations of the project it is supposed to fund, as it does, that policy is fair and not really something other crowdfunded projects let you do. If the point of pledges is to fund the project, then it makes sense what is focused on is just that, and melt encouraged as the alternative for who doesn't want their current ship.

Ship prices that could be changed at the drop of a hat. CI could decide to change everything and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Yeah there’s a disclaimer but going from a 2 seater ship to a single seater and removing most of the weapons is a dick move no matter how you look at it. And people who bought, sorry pledged, for the ship are told too bad no refunds melt it down for store credit.
Im well aware of what it means but I also seem to remember that CR said he could get this done for far less and that every dollar can be stretched farther because they don’t have a publisher. The policy isn’t fair though because they give you an option to melt down ships so they don’t have to refund you if something major changes but then also say sorry we only want new money. You don’t see the duplicity in that statement? They will be your best friend until you give them money then will find anyway possible to get more money out of you selling you dreams while failing to deliver on what they originally sold to you

why are you so obsessed with bashing SC? MMORPG used to be a website I visited because I was excited for all of these new games since the days I played Ultima Online. Now it's just people hating on innovation because they got burnt a couple times. Are there any video games that you do like?

The prices will be, the economy in-game will only flesh out when the game itself does, so like said it'd be silly to lock the game saying something is final preventing future balance changes.
That was the exception not the rule, the changes that happen are hitting on some visual changes and stats and when they are major it's often cases like the Freelancer or the Caterpillar where owners are happy to have gotten an upgrade.
This two options are meant for two different things, melt to get rid of a ship you didn't want and new pledges to fund ongoing dev (hence the new money), if everyone did melt for a new thing it would defeat the whole point, hence why it got limited.

Thanks for agreeing with me
Im sure there are other ships out there that had specs changed that many people didn’t like and they were out of luck cause sorry outside 14 refund window.
Why would you buy a ship you didn’t want? Or is it cause CI changed it and it’s no longer the ship you originally bought? Or could it be you’re tired of waiting years for it to be flight ready and are sick of seeing newer designs be sold and made flight ready while your ship collects dust in the jpeg pile because CI has no incentive to finish it because they already got your money? If they didn’t want people to melt then they should get rid of the option but in typical CI fashion they implement something and then heavily restrict it because if everyone melted then the project would crash and burn due to bankruptcy.
That's one thing I don't like about the ship pipeline. The concept drawings and stats will change when the ship is being created. Even after being created it goes to the balance guy who usually is focused on reducing all that DPS that may make the ship too OP. Then the ship is as far as I know forever subject to reworks.
You can wait until the ship is finished but that often comes at a higher price as the concept model is usually the cheapest and you may end up paying a lot more for waiting to actually walk around in the ship. Like others have said there are the war-bond prices which devalues the money you spent with melted ships. In a way it is a lot like buying loot-boxes.
No SC ship comes with a guarantee that it's 100% finished. Unlike in Eve and other space games that rarely change a ship after it's released.

If they didn’t want people to melt then they should get rid of the option but in typical CI fashion they implement something and then heavily restrict it because if everyone melted then the project would crash and burn due to bankruptcy.
Nobody likes to get their gear nerfed, buy it or not, but it's part of core balance and on SC the ships are not a product, are a reward for a pledge some people insist on keep forgetting that to expect guarantees that are not there.
By mere crowdfunding fact the game had to sell stuff to fund itself before said things could properly exist, on a playable environment, there are all sorts of reasons leading to melts, from not liking the implemented result to getting bored of the ship playing it or just wanting something else / upgrade.

Also if I recall correctly, The New World had a gold cash store on the pre-alpha tests. Can be confusing that with another upcoming MMO, they all on NDA so I shouldn't even be saying stuff owo
Also, you said about "predatory business practices", a pre-alpha of a game that is funded by a major company that implements the cash shop on the first initial testing, that not about helping the dev, unlike titles where their budget comes from players.
Also, I once bought a synthesizer for $100, one that now regularly sells for $20k. So?
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
"is just as", that's a very delusional statement, loot boxes have drained far more money from people on smaller transactions at a time on literal 0-cost money for the company, SC is upfront about what you're getting and its cost, and it doesn't require it for starters as I said.
So sad....
People don’t know what they are buying. CI reserves the right to change anything they want and you have no say about it. If you’re outside of the refund period then you are also out of luck.
Limited ships were just for the biggest capitals the demand is far beyond the availability of a few dozen per year, there was a promise not let the biggest ships pledges openly available, this is why the Bengal was never sold.
best example I can think of is the khartu-al where they removed something like 2/3 of the guns and removed the 2nd seat.
They will be your best friend until you give them money then will find anyway possible to get more money out of you selling you dreams while failing to deliver on what they originally sold to you
That was the exception not the rule, the changes that happen are hitting on some visual changes and stats and when they are major it's often cases like the Freelancer or the Caterpillar where owners are happy to have gotten an upgrade.
This two options are meant for two different things, melt to get rid of a ship you didn't want and new pledges to fund ongoing dev (hence the new money), if everyone did melt for a new thing it would defeat the whole point, hence why it got limited.
Im sure there are other ships out there that had specs changed that many people didn’t like and they were out of luck cause sorry outside 14 refund window.
