...According to companies at least and 'profitability':

Pretty much explaining why there wont be a Xenosaga HD collection. Personally, I loved the first and third games, but recently found out that they never released in Europe, which only saw the second entry. As to why they would only release the second one in the EU and not the other two is beyond me, but "potential profits" kill off more things some of us find memorable yet again.

I'm sure other people on here have several games they would love to see updated to modern tech, not necessarily a remake per-se, just updated textures etc. Feel free to list those you might want to see but don't think it'll ever happen due to "potential profits" not being enough.

I don't think that means it wasnt that good. I'm actually replaying this on PS2 and an old CRT and it looks and plays fine, enjoying it. I think this particular series has always been hit or miss with people, this one in particular has a TON of scenes to watch and turns some people off from it.

why cant they just put them on the psn store and we just emulate it ... that would be good enough

The tech has not bin advanced enough (cost to much)  to really make a modulair game /mmo that you could upgrade at will.  In the end its the risk / vs profit. Newer gamers do not play older games simply coz they are outdated.
If blizzard could 123 convert all its graphical content into a modern version without needing to chance any code then there be sure to make a huge profit.

Lets take the Sims or SimCity , two games that have a long row of new version of the same game. every version needs compleet rewrite. yet they still sell enough to keep upgrading the old idea's

SWG, COH , <Insert emulated game> , are a few games that died of age vs newer tech games..
SWG made some radical changes to their combat engine, a risk that dint pay out (and mostly PR disaster bullshit over the years)

There are so many games that would resell great with some updates to their engine, The tech simply dint exist back then.

Movie remakes have shown that using the same idea but updated works just fine to generate money.

Minecraft still runs strong today, Its modulair.. more content, better graphics

We might see the first of such adaptable game design emerge soon, technology is far ahead of the average consumer pc / console. A  3d designer can make far better far more detailed models then that a game could show on such systems. the engine/server code is its own limit. the more modulair you develop enabling instant turn on and off every single "thing" at will, the longer a game could age.
Its a bit more tricky then how i write stuff here but it should be possible.

a game that comes to mind (never played it, not a backer) might be the much doubted/Hated/Controversial game being development (mmo) at the moment,
StarCitizen looks to be developed highly modulair (ofc no real idea) If they are able to keep as much as possible into as small as possible snippets of code they could be in development for ever and ever <small joke>

    Anyway

Think we all got that dream game we love to see in a modern engine, Someday Someone will play in virtual space .. Its not us.. (yet)

This is unfortunately the case according to some companies. The real problem is that they dont want to just let them go to other groups that might want to take on the task with the possibility of seeing little return.

Of course, the alternative could be the Shenmue 1+2 ports currently on steam and are in questionable states or seeing question pc ports of SE's titles over the years. These wouldn't be an issue if those companies invested a little extra to refine those products post release, but a lot of them are just done for some quick bucks (see FFVIII 'remaster'), nothing more and unfortunately nostalia-holics dont care as long as they have it.

They were still good. Just because my tastes change, as does fashion, doesn't mean the stuff wasn't good, imo. It had to have some merit to enjoy it in the first place. Ive gone back to EQ and enjoyed the memories more than the gameplay for sure, but I’ll always hold both in high esteem and lament the day I can no longer squeeze through the halls of Neriak.

This is why I don't go back and play old games that I loved.  I have learned that the memories are best left as they are.  When I go back, I realize all the flaws in the game.  Rather than spoil a good memory, I'll keep the memories and move onto new things.

I've discovered interesting things in replaying older games or playing modern remakes of old games.

The old Devil May Cry's (even as recently as DMC4) aged so very poorly.

Spyro's flight segments fucking sucked. And Spyro 1 was deeply flawed.

I have no patience for arbitrary racing segments in non-racing games anymore.

I would argue that DMC aged badly in general. I loved DMC in the day but played DMC5 on Gamepass and was so bored
I'm not sure what part of DMC5 felt bad to you. I thought it was one of the best action games I've played.

Though I will say that even DMC 5's dodging is unresponsive and jank compared to Platinum action games.

Maybe I am just not into pure action games anymore. I tried to play Bayonotta a few months ago and was bored by that as well. I think the last game that was in the same vein as DMC that I liked was Astral Chain
I could never get into Bayonetta. The action aged better, but I didn't like her as a character, I didn't care for the setting/characters, the camera is atrocious, and the game seems to rely on killing you in cheap, roundabout ways.

When the fight with her friend/rival, Jean, happened and the awful camera coupled with her high movement made the fight a visual clusterfuck, I was just done. The one-on-one fight-as-equals bosses are the greatest highlights of these games to me, and when that moment faceplanted, I just couldn't do it anymore.

As a marketplace, games change to cater to the larger demographic.
As for we the gamer, our interests change and we begin to expect more because ,well better/more is possible.
I no longer want to see those little pixel characters, low poly players with very little animations.I no longer want to play a rpg in a dungeon where the walls look the same all the time.

There can still be great ideas from the past but how you implement those in 2020 SHOULD change.
    Hardware advances,tech advances,employees advance,i expect a much better product than when i was 18.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

(Totally missed the point  :o )

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I can not play most games older then 20/25 years. Not because of outdated graphics or game mechanics but because of outdated UIs and controls. It hit me when I was in the GoG beta testing program all those years ago. When I was admitted I was so freaking excited to play all those old gems, they even gave me a bunch for free. I didn’t finish even one, lasted a maximum of about 3 hours in any of those games. I felt so disappointed. So here is my list of games that will NEVER receive a remake although they are awesome:

    Anything SSI related
    Crusader
    Syndicate
    Ultima 5/6/6
    Lands of Lore
    Eye of the Beholder
    Bad Mojo
    Phantasmagoria 1
    Populous

    And for consoles:

    Panzer Dragoon 1/2/saga
    Comix Zone
    Stella Deus
    Shadow Hearts 1/2
    Killer7
    Viewtiful Joe
    Eternal Darkness
    Starfox
    Golden Axe 3

Actually, I could keep going and going, there is so much great stuff that isn’t being remade. But we get Spyro and Crash remakes, great...

The issue is just "what is trendy". Those companies try to deal with % and back when games were less mainstream and had a more obtuse and niche focus to it.

Now you go and compare even the sales figures of something as popular as Witcher 3 or Skyrim to Fortnite numbers and you'll how much of the landscape changed.

The weird thing is that it did all that with only the 2nd title (known by most to be the weakest of the trilogy) being released in the EU. All this talk about 'profitability' from companies while missing that they launched only the middle title of a trilogy to a pretty sizable chunk of the western gaming market just lacks logic.

Shadow Hearts felt ahead of its time even though I loved that series to death. The first two definitely deserves a HD version. Its also amazing how that game could find ways to be funny given how dark the game was.

Both endings in part 2 are some of the most evocative and gut wrenching story telling in all my gaming years. An absolute masterclass in combining the silly with the tragic and how they can reinforce each other.

There is a vast difference between "not good" and "not profitable if the effort was invested."

If you loved it then it was/is better than good. That's all you need to know.
