What do you mean they take Western ideas? They are a Western studio. Californian. And yet another example of Western mmo developers not knowing what they are doing.
He said western licenses and not ideas so technically it was correct, Champions, Star Trek and Neverwinter / D&D are all western IPs.
Though they don't "take" them, mostly just fell into their laps, it was Atari who have made those deals.
About the second part, I wish I could share your optimism... but I'm afraid they know exactly what are they doing. Exactly what Blizzard did with Immortal. Going after the wallets of a pretty huge target group, and they give a damn to the fact this group is pretty far from their usual or intended playerbase, or that they will be pissed.
What I don't get, why use the IP? This game has almost no MtG in it, they said even that no Magic knowledge or background is needed. So, what's the point of reskinning a diablo clone with MtG? The MtG fans will be annoyed, or ignore it entirely, and the diablo-clone fans won't care about the minuscule lore tidbits while trashing hundreds of mobs brainlessly.
It's even pointless as an advertisement, I seriously doubt any such player will say afterwards "gee, that's fun, maybe I should buy a pack and a few boosters, and check the cardgame too"... the two just aren't compatible.
it's clearly not an MMO. I very strongly suggest for their own good they dont try to pretend they are. MMO players wont be kind to them.
They don't pretend it. Only at the very start they've said MMORPG, afterwards usually just said action MMO, and since the first alpha gameplay they've left that behind too, now they mostly just say isometric arpg, or online arpg.
