BDO: the good, the bad, and the ugly?

MaridMarid Member UncommonPosts: 128
edited January 2020 in The Pub at MMORPG.COM
First, I need to clear something up: I recently read that BDO has a PvE-only server...is that true? If so, I want to get BDO! But I want to get y'all's opinion of the game, first - the good, bad, and ugly of it.

The areas that I'm interested in are: character development, fashion, exploring, crafting, combat, and housing...in that order.

I'm very interested in what y'all think about BDO...but I'm not interested in rewarding a developer/publisher for doing something stupid, like creating a MMO that features open-world PvP. So, if BDO has a PvE-only server then feel free to express your thoughts about the game so I know whether or not to get it.

Thanks a bunch, guys! ;)

Edit: I forgot to mention that I want to be able to solo at least 70% of the content in MMOs...nothing worse than being forced to group with a bunch of angry/hateful strangers.

Also: what are the naming guidelines in BDO? How many characters can you use...and can you use spaces?

Playing BDO would be like going to a free festival, handing you all the water you can drink and then charging $50 to use the bathroom.

Sure you don't have to use the bathroom, but good luck :(

The entire design is "stupid" and why i quit and left the game sort of bitter.

This team knows absolutely nothing about immersion, every single aspect of the design is kind of automated.
Want to move from here to there,no problem auto travel.Want a quest,no problem your auto devil thingy pops up.Want to enjoy some fishing,no problem go afk and auto fish, your not even playing the game.

Combat is the dumbest i have ever seen and i get miffed by silliness like somersaults but this game takes dumb to a new level.Spin o rama left right left up down left right...NONSENSE.

Mobs predominantly just stand around their own little area and are so closely bunched.

The workers/npc ideas are again more or less automated, you don't actually see any npc's,it is just a small menu.

The game COULD have been decent enough to play but the entire design, like every 5 minutes had me running for the exit.As to PVE only server,IDK THE GAME itself was soo bad i never cared to explore any further,i just wanted out and fast. This was perhaps the first game i ever wanted a refund,i felt like i was that ripped off but was turned down because apparently i signed soem waiver by accepting a free in game pet..lol.

Unlike editing a post, editing a thread is top right. Its a decent MMO with a guild, that saying get a good guild and most MMOs are decent. The issue for me was you get to near top level and realise that the weapon and armour upgrades system is an arms race, needing unending supplies of gold. Because of this many players buy cash shop items to sell onto others for in game gold. That is a perverse revenue model so I dropped the game.

Black Desert doesn't suck as others have said. Well, as long as you are not trying to be competitive.

It has an extremely beautiful world, amazing combat if you like action combat, very interesting mobs as far as aesthetics and quite a bit you can do.

Some people have said you fight brain dead mobs. Well, I've never played an mmorpg that didn't have "easy" brain dead mobs.  The idea is that you are supposed to take on whole groups very quickly. It seems that is how excitement is generated. And it can be fun as far as grinding goes (it is a grind game though there are quests)

Some of the systems are needlessly complicated as far as how they are presented.

There aren't raids (well the only raids they have are burning down a large boss/game doesn't have intricate theme park raids as far as I've seen) or as far as I've encountered, World of Warcraft instanced dungeons. There are Caves and dungeons and areas you can go to grind though.

Fashion is there but you buy cosmetics. They can be pricey. Character development is "ok" but I highly doubt there are huge differences in builds between players though there are a lot of skills. Exploration is there as there are very interesting areas all over the place.

Housing? Yup, it's a key part of the game and you essentially get housing to then get workers who will work for you.

I don't do much of that as I found it tedious but some like it. I prefer fishing as it's relaxing and grinding/exploring.

Enchanting weapons is a great way to get gear (theoretically) but the Black Desert system is atrocious as it's expensive and relies on RNG. I just buy my gear off the Auction House though those pieces at higher levels, will be very expensive.

If you can divorce yourself from the whole "must be top level and gear competitive" then it can be a fun game. There is something really nice about just getting in a boat and tooling around.

If you are not into PvP then you should try this game. The bad part is the terrible need to pray to the RNG god to get upgrades for your gear. If you are not looking for a PvP game then let me tell you what I found interesting in this game. I only took the monthly pass thing to increase my inventory and  the bank space. I had one pet. Lot of people played this game with different expectations and their point of view if they actually bothered to explain it will reflect that. Don't bother with the lousy answers that don't give you any details. They just post to rag on the game.

The first thing I found interesting in this game was the way the node system worked. The nodes are where you gain resources like different types of wood, ores and so on. You can if you want mine or gather things yourself but this is very time consuming and not efficient at all. Instead you buy workers well slaves really that are paid with 'wait for it' BEER. Yes Beer. Image result for beer emoji

You will have to make the beer yourself because these suckers get thirsty pretty often. Workers also have specialities. You assign workers to mine or  gather the resources and they will actually appear in your game carrying empty containers or returning with the resources and they will deposit it in the bank where they are coming from. If you make a worker travel very far they will take hours and hours to make the circuit.

Workers also can manufacture goods that you can carry in trade wagons to far off places to sell and make money off. The most fun part of BDO is opening new nodes and looking for places and connecting the nodes and finding the best route to carry the items you make.

You can also farm in BDO. Grow things that you can them turn into trade goods and sell. Prices of things you sell will also vary in prices depending on how many people are selling what you are attempting to sell.

You will also have to invest in real estate and buy certain buildings to make the type of things you want and they will be in different cities just like the workers are from different towns. Not every place will have the type of building you need or there may be a restriction on what you can own in that town. You also need to have a place for your workers to stay and sleep before you send them out "you slave driver"!

I made some very beautiful wagons and you will need to replace the wagon as they experience wear and do finally break. You can also increase their speed and carry capacity with upgrades. There is a complex network of nodes that you have to open to get to certain resources. You can breed or buy horses to pull your wagon and the speed of the horse is also taken into account.

Next you can also breed horses. I mean really cross breed with other player's horses that they put up and sell the horses you manage to breed if they come out well. There is also fishing that can net you a good price if you sell them quite fast after you catch them as they will continue to depreciate in value and become rotten if you take too long.

You can make boats and even carry goods to far off places.

If these things sound interesting to you you should try the game.

The worst cash shop to win game ever. Ok to get a nice looking outfit 20 to 50 dollars usa money. to change how it looks 1-20 dollars.

To level up end game gear dismantel cash shop bought outfits and get a 01 chance.

To advance after level 62 spend You got to spend rl cash shop money to leave pc online 24 7 and you know all ready pay rl cash to hit a practice dummy for 2  what 8 weeks.  Or you can pvp your guild vs other guilds from all time zones to fight over the grinding area to level up.

Takes months of killing the same mobs in pvp while having to press 5 buttons to get 1 skill to work. Does that sound like fun game People in the guild I was in had spent anywhere from 7 thousand dollars to 12 thousand dollars to Advance their world boss gear so they could one-shot you?

Great post...very informative! The only thing I want to be able to do, combat wise, is to beat up the biggest/meanest monsters in the open-world all by myself. If I can do that with good (maybe not the greatest) quality stuffs then that would suit me just fine. :)
  • cheyanecheyane Member LegendaryPosts: 9,404
I did spend some time killing monsters and you also have a quest line that has some cool bosses you can kill. The really hard ones you need a  group but a lot of folk group up daily to kill bosses.

Wow! Beer?! That sounds awesome! Do you have to build the brewing equipment yourself, or do you buy it, or what? Sounds like the crafting system in BDO is very deep...I'll make that a research priority.

  • cheyanecheyane Member LegendaryPosts: 9,404
Yes you have to place the equipment in your house to make the beer, the equipment is quite cheap. The game also has an energy system and you will need alts to make use of the energy they have. Make one alt to gather the crops you grow and make the beer while your main character uses their energy for other things.

I haven't played for some time so my knowledge may be outdated.

So you wanna dress up your dolly and furnish house for her? Right, you can do it, but it will cost you a lot of real money, like 30 e for 1 dress. In game there is like 5 default armors for every class and thats it, wanna more, buy in cash shop. Same with furniture. You can craft some armor pieces, but they have same look as your standard 5 type armor,  so you mostly craft potatoes to sell on market.
The armor upgrade, people talking here, is when you put that same looking pieces of armor together in hopes the get next tier of it, it will look the same but will have better stats.
Exploration is for free and even if the world look beautiful, it is empty, you can find some crafting node here and there, but thats all about it. You can climb that mountain, but there is nothing, no secrets to discover, maybe 3 mobs wandering around.
So if you have a lot of spare cash, this game could be for you, otherwise highly not recommended!

I've watched some videos of BDO combat and it's very...visceral. I'm not strictly opposed to that type of twitchy "flamboyant" combat, mind you, but, it is, imo, a bit over the top in BDO.

As for the lack of immersion, I totally understand where you're coming from...unfortunately, my friend, we're dependent on greedy (they have to be greedy, by law, or they could face a lawsuit by their investors for negligence) corporations for our entertainment, and that's not going to change any time soon. Modding could radically change the way we get our MMO entertainment...let's just hope we can make some headway in that direction.

Right now is not a good time to start BDO - the power gap between a new player and veterans is so huge - its practically insurmountable.

I'd wait for the season servers to be rolled out and then try those - everyone starts at even playing ground without any boss gear or access to billions of silver they have in their banks/storage. So a new player and a 5 year vet will both start at level 1 with zero silver and no gear.

Season servers also promise to have super boosted chances of gear enhancement - which is one of the biggest RNG cancers in the game.

See? This is the type of insightful info I was looking for! I did a quick search for "season servers" but couldn't find any info on them. Anything extra you can share would be appreciated. I just made this thread because BDO in on sale atm; I don't need to save that piddly little $5 dollars...just saying, though. If I can start fresh in a new server, well, that would be super-duper great!
