I've read about some mobile gatcha games which regularly stand up new servers so the players can literally spend their way to winning but that's a dirty world I don't care to visit.

You should take a look at Austrian politics. ;-) When a former vice-chancellor of Austria bought his way to the top of a mobile game ("Clash of Clans", player name "Heinrich") with money from his party (thousands of Euro every month).

His comment:"Accidently billed to the party credit-card, but the error was corrected quickly." Guess what, he was recently thrown out of his party. And the government ;-)  There is much more (google "Ibiza scandal" for LOLs), but that is the game-related part of the story.

I seem to recall a similar story a few years back here stateside where an accountant embezzled $4M from his firm, spending $2M on Clash of Clans or something like that.

When asked why such spending didn't raise any red flags the game company reps said this high roller behavior is not so unusual, with some other high end customers at the $900K mark in the same year.

Far as I know game company got to keep the money.

Being a stickler for definition and usage of words or terms I would call your methodology a measurement of the degree of advantage one can purchase, hence Pay for Advantage (P4A) is more accurate.

Yeah, I cannot really disagree. My main point is that being able to pay for an advantage is not always an inherently bad thing.

Unless of course one takes the standpoint that "advantage" is an inherently bad thing in itself. I do not, just to make that clear! But if one did, you would be back with the exact same definition issue as P2W has...  ;)
Yeah, I look at whether other people paying for advantage really impacts me.

In EVE I never once felt I lost a fight due to another person's pay to win, even though I'm sure some bought PLEX or SPs, so to me, no harm done since it wasn't obvious.

Contrast that with my time in Runes of Magic when a level 40 Stealther bedeviled my son and I (both level 44) for 3 evenings.

Being a healer / high DPS combo the stealther really couldnt take us down, but he did get my son a few times being more fragile.

We however never got the stealther down below 40%, no matter how hard we tried, he would outlast us to that mark, stealth away and come back for another round

Eventually we got to chatting with him, asking why he was unkillable, and he shared his "secret," he spent around $400 in the cash shop to rank up his gear.

Later as my son and I are nearing the level cap my guild leader asks me if I'm planning to raid and if yes, prepared to spend $600 to $800 for both of us in the cash shop to get ready to begin raiding. (WTF?)

The final nail which drove me away came after reaching level 60 and facing off against a single "Red" Mage who reportedly spent $8K on his gear. (game was still in beta)

There were over 20 level 60 players against just him, and he cleaned our clocks, repeatedly killing everyone through the power of his gear and not any great tactical genius.

Worse, he lead an all Red, high rollers only clan where minimum entry was $2K spent, and when they grouped up no one could even kill one of them in a large fight.

All of this was so in my face, not to mention extra storage was rented monthly, not sold and I walked away,  never really giving any F2P much of a go until POE many years later.

LMFAO...blah blah blah blah.....the game is f'in 17 years old people! Think about how they have gone through shifting business model trends, it is a niche part of the genre to have such longevity. I seem to remember a metric they were, someone was tracking some years ago.....basically, EVE had a steady influx of new players, on the constant that the attrition would average out.

All I am saying is, what CCP and that community have been able to accomplish is impressive, but money makes the world go around, keeps the servers online, and updated when needed, and the fact is you need fresh blood.
