Lotro SoA is the most fun I have ever had playing video games. I don't need it modernized, just give a classic server that ends with MoM and I will be a happy man.
I suppose it depended on which version of DAoC was released. Nowadays you could level up fairly easily doing quests. In the beginning, yeah... tons of grinding.
This is a good point, too. Those games that get voted on, where does the expansions get in the way, or drive some players away? SW:G NGE or prior to that? For EQ, which expansion? I started EQ with the Kunark expansion (never played vanilla), but liked what Velious added, too.
So how far along do these old MMORPGs get remade?
Good point, and this point was asked when LotRO made a re-boot, or some such, because apparently the Mines of Moria expansion was not well received.
For me, I when I think of a Reboot, I think of rebuilding the game the way it could have been done, like taking the base of the game, the mechanics, systems, rules, basically how things worked and flowed.
And taking that really solid and ideal framework that was enjoyed, and building a new game around it, sometimes with a whole new staff and company working on this as well.
Like for example. DDO, was an amazing game, riddled full of bugs, issues, and just directionless things tacked on to it, with a under powered staff that all they did was complain about the code and how hard it was to fix things. Which is a crying shame, because the game itself, could have been great.
And I think when people talk about a Re-make, or a Re-boot, they mean, making the game as great as it could have been.
The problem is that different people have different ideas about what should have been changed to make the game as great as it could have been. Fixing bugs is nearly always good, but when you start rebalancing things or adding or removing features, you'll run into controversy. One person's "directionless things tacked on" is another person's key features.

Ya know what, I'll give you this one, to a point.
But I think a lot of Dev's, much like the majority of players, know when something went ass backwards. I would like to believe that the Dev's at least somewhat know what was, and was not, well received (And if they don't, or never caught this clue, then they really should not be the ones making games in the first place, as anything they make is destined to fail at some point).
Now, this unfortunately often comes from hindsight and they have to deal with what they did, because while it was unpopular overall, it was still popular to small community, and they see it as the damage having been done already, and taking it out would just make things worse, but looking back, if they had the choice to do things again, they never would have put that in to start with.
And that is what I think about when I think about a game being remade.
I mean after all, if the only thing done would be an graphics upgrade, the game will do no batter (and perhaps a lot worse) than it did it's first time around, and that is like putting money into a ship that already sunk.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.

That's a lot of assumptions about the developers' minds.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

Yes, Yes it is, and I am really starting to get annoyed every time I try to give them the benefit of the doubt, and they remind me why that was a mistake in the first place.
Prime example currently is New World. "Golly we put in FFA OW PvP and players are ganking newbs.. we had no idea that would happen"
So.. there are time when I realize any faith I might have in them is woefully unfounded.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
LOL at the NEW World notion the devs had no idea, they knew, they simply wanted or hoped to deliver a VERY shallow empty world pvp game.Remember that Smedley works there and likely reminds them how he made off like a bandit with the very cheaply made H1Z1.
None the less, there really has been NOTHING that really stands out and says PLAY ME,not even the Witcher series. My fave game and only real rpg i want to play is FFXI but it has been long time ruined. So to me the best remake is incoming with the FFXI mobile,it could perhaps bring back the old school of actual online play, you know grouping, playing with others.
Problem is that my one hope for a great comeback game will be on mobile and run by a super greedy mobile business...Nexon,so there is little hope for that one hope.
What bothers me is that it really seems soooooo many people have such low standards, they want remakes of such crappy games. This PSo2 is a prime example, the game is way over rated not even remotely good.People wanted and supported CU simply because of the hint it might be a remake of DAOC another game i feel was grossly over rated.
I would rather see NO remakes, design a new ip,a new game and do it well,no more of this arpg crap, empty worlds with mindless combat full of somersaults. No more Final Fantasy,no more Everquest,no more Elder Scrolls,no more Diablo's god no more of that crap, or DAOC or Warcraft ,make something new and intriguing.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I love that this is the direction that NC Soft is going. First they are doing Blade and Soul and next they will be doing Lineage 2 which was my main for 10 years.

To echo my opinion about "new versions" are worse - though not game so a bit off-topic: just look at the site revamp
Ugly, clunky, unnecessarily flashy and eats up more resources for nothing... is this really what people on the web likes nowadays? Previous iteration had a sleek design, and that too was already a revamp, when they swapped engines they did some layout redesign too.
Even moreso funny when you check in the other thread, where most say they're just here for the forums
(Personally, the mmorpg.com layout around 2010 was the best.)
The new layout is taking a little work to navigate. The old one was more cluttered with info, but easier to navigate for those who knew the site already.
