Civ 4, 5 or 6... whichever you want. They're a great first 4X because you can let the AI handle a lot of things without the need to micromanage quite as much as in the more HC 4X games.
The Masters of Orion series is also very good that way (trivia: the 4X term was actually first coined by them) but it's gotten long in the tooth graphically,

I see the Collector's edition has 1, 2, and 3. Did all of those get a graphics update?

Hey @MightyUnclean, did you make a choice? I want a follow up here

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Civ 4 has a pretty severe case of badly coded syndrome. They took a game that they knew was going to be heavily CPU bound, then made the whole thing single-threaded in Python. So you can click click click to do your turn, then sit and twiddle your thumbs for a while waiting for the AI to go. Then do your next turn, then wait a while for the AI to go. Half the game consists of waiting for the AI to go. Maybe newer, faster CPUs reduce that to 1/3 of the game, but still, it's annoying.
@MightyUnclean I don’t know if you are subscribed to the Humble Bundle but they just had a pack including Warhammer 40K: Gladius which I think is a great starting point for a 4x game.
If you don’t have it but are interested, give me a whisper, I’ve got an extra game key laying around. Else I’ll randomly give it away.

There is basically 3 types, the large city planners with Diplomacy,Politics, religion and handling large groups of troops with little micro managing.
There are the plethora of space options but imo, none of those are very good. There was one that had potential, you play off of two separate planets, game looks ok but i can't remember the name of it lol.
Somewhere in between is the Age of Wonders series, several versions/Dlc's. Endless Legends but not a fan,it's ok i guess.
Then the type i prefer but struggle to find any new Fantasy versions with individual troop management/gear /items/potions/crafting etc etc. In the Fantasy type i played a lot of The Fallen Enchantress and then moved on to Stardock's newer Sorcerer King and then the updated version SK Rivals.
I like the micro managing down to the fine detail in the SK Rivals. The game is imo easily learned, not over complicated.A few days in and you'll have a set pattern of how to play and what and when to unlock stuff. It has difficulty choices,i tend to play on Normal.
I guess the biggest decision right off the hop might be "graphics".The Total War and Civ series seem to be the most polished but the Age OF Wonders series is no slouch.
Aside from a few games MOST all fall into the same rated graphics.
it is too bad a large developer won't make a really good 4X game with nice graphics, micro managing with tons of items and not focusing on politics or religion.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
IDK ,some like myself are not into Politics and Religion and handling a large group of troops.Of course it always depends on each person's niche criteria.Another example is i am not a fan of troops retreating although yeah i get it, adds some realism ...but not really lol.
I like how the games i play do it,you have that typical over world map and then when you run into an encounter and different instance map opens up and you fight with a handful of troops versus another handful of troops.
I control each troop individually whilst other games you control a large rectangle of troops.
I know the CIV series tried to bait me in with the newest CIV 6 and the ability to play Canada ALMOST hooked me in,but i stayed the course. To build a hockey rink and have the Royal Mounties would be fun but the CIV series never intrigues me with it's design.

Any Civ game would be the safest option since that will give you an idea if the genre is for you or not.
That really depends. The latest Civ (5&6, and possibly even 4?) games have hundreds of dollars of DLC. True, they're not "needed", but if one enjoys the games they may want to get the DLCs, too.

To me the civilization series does it best. You can find arguments for every version (except beyond earth, that we don't talk about) but I would go with either 4 or 6. I
If you want to focus more on wars (the fourth x of 4x) then I would say the Eurpoa Universalis series but their learning curve makes eve online seem like it holds your hand

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
4X games are fun, and very relaxing.
That’s my favorite genre, together with MMORPGs.
