Take a look at the new site layout and consider some of the recent articles. They appear to be shifting (in a big way) to mobile games, just like they shifted from MMORPGs to any and all games. That's where the money will be.
I had a post deleted from the most recent editorial posted ("MMORPGs are Thriving, and Other Problems) because I mentioned where I think their money will be coming from in the (near?) future.
Take a guess where that might be.

(I expect this one might be deleted too.)
Eh, your post is still there. And I think you missed the point of that other article if you think it was shifting anything *for* mobile games.
That article is probably the worst disguised promo ever seen.
Promo for what?! Lolol my goodness, I don't even know where to begin...
Yes, I can see that you aren't following.
No matter. Nothing going to change anything anyways. We're all just spectators.
I don't think I'm the one who isn't following. You think the article was a promo for... mobile games? It says a lot about your reading comprehension if that was your take on it. If anything it was a closer promo for cloud gaming... which has nothing to do with mobile games aside from the fact you can play real MMOs (GW2, ESO, WoW) on a mobile device.

If you want more MMORPG articles, check out https://massivelyop.com/.  It has more coverage of true MMOs with fewer fluff pieces.  mmorpg.com is a better place for fans to discuss the genre, in my opinion.

I have agreed with this 1000 times.  In fact these two sites are the ones I have bookmarked an check he most.  I have always used this site as a forums site to see what others think an what they have seen or heard on games.  The articles were never a big pull for me here.  Hell over the last year or so the articles became even less worthy when it started to seem like ever other article was for chairs, keyboards, ect... instead of games themselves.  I don't mind covering mobile games, an non-MMORPG games either.  It is a bit much though when you had 6 articles that showed on the main page an two where basically ads for paraphernalia.  I really hope that the editors understand that many come here just for the forums.  It kinda seems like the forums are getting pushed aside.

I clicked on massively ops link and tried to find the forums. I was lead to a crowd funding section. Yep. They’re modern alright....

You see, but you don't see.
All that you said is true, except you aren't following the line from here to there.
As mobile games get better and better on their way towards being just as good as computer games, there's stages in between.
But in essence, mobile games will explode far bigger than they are today. They will merge into the same games as what's available on computers.
Along with this merging of the games themselves, there will be a merging of the Cash Shops into the RMT sales.
This is going to be huge money, and draw the whole business deeper into cash sales than ever before.
FTP, with Cash Shops and RMT, all rolled into one. It's already that way with exception of a few holdouts in the computer end, but those holdouts are going to succumb to the money side too as this merging takes place.
Forget good RPing games. It's going to be all about the Cash Shops and RMT, which is also big business (the Whales) for the Developers. Games will be designed for all the sales rather than as good RPing games.

We're the dodo birds, the dinosaurs. We're going to die out. Because there won't be anything else to play. And there's nothing we can do about it.

This site's change that fits current mobile gaming so well, that's an indication that it's coming. That's where the future is, even before mobile games grow into the same games as what you can play on a computer.
Sites like this one will be outlets for the RMT sales (the Whales) as these things merge together. Can't blame them, they see the writing on the wall too.

Is Chess covered by this site. Is it an option in the list of games? Has anyone created a forum on Chess here?

for your statement to hold true, games like FO76 should have been a huge success, anthem should have did well and BR games should dominate everything. yet each of those got lot backlash and is cost them more too keep pushing those games then finding a endless supply of success taken are money.

when mobile gaming was new and exploding record profits years ago from angry birds and match 3 and everyone swore it was the future... we still have normal games. so 20 years from now will still have normal games.  VR games with cash shops, that you can use you phone to experience with F2P ads, will not be the future, even if it exist as a option.

their always be exploitative  games that succeed because of the ease of nickel and dime tactics used on us, however it be harder an harder to keep doing it the more company's try and join them.  it not hard to whale one game, what about 5 ? 50 ? if they only care about profit and keep trying push more way too get money, the game will be less fun which in turns  means less players, so less money and it will fail and the market will weed itself out.

the government already started too push back since again their a finite amount of money we can spend and if it all going on exploitative  games they see less cash from us, less travel and less trust, since we have no money and they did nothing to save us from are self. they will not allow it too spread endlessly without even more push back, which means less profits from those tactics.

If chess were released today, the pawns and king would be free but you would have to pay for every other piece.

No worries, you can buy as many queens as you want though. Plus the different costumes for each of them.

But will there be bunny ears? I just don't think I can get immersed in Chess if I can't buy bunny ears to customize my queen.

It's because mmorpgs are not so popular anymore and they have to pay their staff, so they write about other games to try and make money.

They do write about minor patches for the games they do follow. I would guess the reason they don't follow patches and news on minor mmorpgs is that they don't have any staff playing those games, and it would be too costly to pay someone to play 50 hours of a game to be able to write something usefull, and then have very few people read it.

When I'm looking for mmorpg news this is still the site I go to. I don't know about any other sites that follow mmorpgs.(I don't read too many game sites either).

Mmorpgs will probably make it back someday. Right now other games are more popular.
Well said. I miss @BillMurphy, but I have been going to this site for 15 years and finally created an account in 08. It is still the best site for MMORPGS.

I'm hoping Pantheon will be the game I call home for many years.

In all fairness they show how many vote there are for the game.  So if you see only 10 votes the number is probably not very reliable.

True, chess is PvP.  Consensual PvP.  Also, if the phone rings or a pipe bursts, I don't automatically lose.
