Ah, thread necromancy, a lost art ! ... not really.

I currently dont have a game to play.

I mean, sure, I sometimes play the games of old, like No Man's Sky. They still update.

But otherwise theres just nothing new that actually strikes my fancy.

I was playing 3-4 hours a day when I could. Nowadays, if I can squeeze one hour...

     Welcome to the forums! :)

As a teenager, I played video games for 10-12 hours. My parents scolded me because of that, as I did nothing but play.

Honestly if you playing 12 hours of video games a day please go get help. Seek out a therapist or counselor and get help because you need it asap. Addiction, depression w.e it is driving you to waste such an obscene amount of time, touch grass and get help.

    Uh-hu.

I think I played 12 hours per day sometimes, during holidays + when I had great games.

Like Vanguard. Or Baldurs Gate 2.

I'm pretty sure I never ever was addicted to gaming.

    Well. I disagree with that.

Life is mostly work, work, shit happens, more work, more shit happening.
And believe it or not, despite this statement, I love life.

So, whenever one can include happiness, please do so whether it is through a video game or something/someone else.

At the end of the day, everything ends. So between two shits, please, enjoy your time until you run out of it.

(In MMORPGs some people think that the endgame is the start of the game, which is non-sense. Same in life.)

It is double standards, if you do 12 hours of social media, texting, phone calls and Tv that's fine? I would say days doing 12 hours a day gaming was occasional for me, but it has happened on a weekend quite a few times.

I woul offer that 12 hours per day of any of those things would warrant some soul searching.

No one has ever been proud of 12 hours of TV, texting etc.

12 hours of a phone call is an odd one because that is being social. Though I suppose some might consider texting to be "social." To me it's laborious.

I can't imagine12 hours of phone time would be comfortable but I can see people doing long calls each day, several times per day.

For me, the only time I ever play a "lot" of hours (could be 12) per day would be when a new Elder Scrolls game comes out. I take a week off and fully immerse myself.

Otherwise, it's not really worth it. When I played Lineage 2 I think I did 4 to 5 hours per day, more on weekends.

Not really interested in doing that for an mmorpg anymore.

I agree that it is a lot of time, what I am getting at is it gets a relative pass because the media which reports these things is never negative about itself. You can find a ton of articles about why social media can be bad for you...on traditional media websites or discussed on the TV. But the media very rarely turns a critical eye on itself, while criticising everything else it can.

For me 12 hours is a rarity and has become rarer as we have got older, but then that happens to a lot of the things we do, doesn't it? :)

What about working 12+ hours per day? Does that also warrant "soul searching"?

Yet in some fields of work (nursing for example) 12-hour shifts are not rare at all - they are common and that's considered commendable or heroic even.

I think more "soul searching" should happen about the double standard of considering some 12+ hour per day activities worthy and others not.

Nursing provides direct benefit to patients and is beneficial to society overall. Gaming does not provide equivalent value and is accordingly not as highly regarded.

    I think that reasonable.

A general critique of those that spend a great deal of time gaming each day isn't as reasonable as one does not know the circumstances of that choice for each person.

GiantDwarf007 is a perfect example of why gaming for long periods of time each day isn't necessarily conduct that should be criticized. Circumstances vary between persons and we each have have to accommodate our own as we can.

I am a few years shy of that, being only 61 myself, but I have a similar background in gaming. I'm not in the best of health, and haven't been since my mid 20's so I don't have a great deal of wealth but an abundance of time.

Most of my entertainment comes from gaming because it is a ridiculously cheap in terms of how many hours of that you get for the pittance you must pay. I don't manage 12+ hours of day as I simply don't have the energy. But without I'd have very little in the way of interactive entertainment, or interaction at all really.

Well, primitive people typically work about 20 hour weeks, and thats the value for unfriendly environments such as deserts. And their "work" is stuff like hunting, setting traps, fishing, or collecting fruits. Stuff we civilized people would do for recovery.

Most I've personally worked at one time was 36 hours. I was trying to program something. I was beyond tired after that time.

Social credit is still a subjective value judgment, a widely held one whether people refer to it by that term or not.

Nursing is objectively more valuable than gaming.

I don't do anything for 12 hours a day.  If I did, it would be sleep, and then maybe a nap after that.

    I think that's a bit different.

If someone hires you and tells you that you are going to do 12 hour shifts (which seems horrible to me by the way) then one must decide if that's the career for them.

Though on a similar note, I'll probably have to do 12 hour days for my musical when it's done and while I'll be tired, not one hour will be anything other than bliss.

What do they say? Love your job and you'll never work a day in your life?  B)

But I get your point in that it's subjective and some might view one activity as so "less than" while other activities are clearly "worth the time."

You're missing the point of subjectivity.

What's worth more? 12 hours of stock trading, government bureaucratic work, mastering a musical instrument, nursing, laboratory work, construction, farming, teaching, pro athletes working out, streaming games, playing games...

It's a subjective ranking system no matter how much you think you have it right, it's still subjective.
