Why are people so mean in World of Warcraft?

I think one point needs to be made here.  Immature does not neccessarily equal mean.  The fact of the matter is that assholes come in all ages and if someone is treating you crap there is just as much a chance that he is 40 as 14.  That being said.  There are alot of younger people in WoW.  They enjoy amusing themselves, and the things they find funny or cool aren't always the same as me at age 32.  Ignoring them is really pretty easy, and finding people your own age or maturity level isn't really that hard either.  As it stands i have a couple of friends my age and a few that are much younger in WoW and once you get past people amusing themselves aloud in general chat its a fun game.

Just like in real life, if someone is an ass to you, either be an ass back or ignore and avoid them.  Don't let it ruin your day or your game.

allright mate dont beleive any one but me k :P

guild wars = realistic graphics so in conclusion = older people
world of warcraft = cartoon graphics so in conclusion = more kids play

i thought this was true and i proved my theory right when i started playing WoW...
also theres the fact that warcraft III attracted many youngsters and because of that they all started playing WoW :S

There are too many children playing WoW is the problem for more mature players.  I'd love to see servers for adults 21 and up.

I hear so many bad stories about l33t kids and general smacktalkers in WoW but when I used to play, either alliance or horde, I found most people to be pretty cool, and the mean people were a rarity, which was probably what kept me playing.

Though, I think as the game is growing, the mopre people that come online, the more chance of that happening, it's just numbers I suppose, my advice is just to ignore them, as I'm sure if you don't bother to reply, they can't really do alot.

Worst comes to the worst, lol, just find their address and pay a personal visit! lol, j/k

Many are not considering that WoW has over 10 times the population of any other game. Not just MMO players play WoW and many that play it are new not only to MMO's but to gaming in whole. The game has a cartoonish appearance which make parent's beleive it is a kids level game if they aren't up to speed on computer gaming themselves as well. Not to mention when you have that many people together the problems are going to be more noticeable.

I play on a RP server in WoW and you would think no one knew what that meant from the way the community is on the server. It's not a bad community on Kirin Tor at all, however most people do not heed the RP tag when they pick a server, and they lack any respect for the RP tag. However it is a more mature community because of it for the most part.

Yes, lots of immature people play the worlds most popular online game. Go figure.

So here's what ya do. Start a guild. Invite all your real life friends that play to the guild. And then have them invite their friends. What you end up with is a guild of people who are tolerable and at least someone is accountable for them being there. :)

    It's worked for me!

    so...

I think that right there is one of the main reasons for the 'zofmgrolfcopter' bullshyte that you see in General etc + School kids bringing their smacktard playground logic with them into their gaming.
Parents see the Disney look and assume it's for kids. Rather brilliant on Blizz's part really. They could have gone a much 'darker' look, such as Warhammer has done imo (WoW-meets-gothic) but they didn't; they chose Disney hehe. (I do rather like the look though personally, is unique and suprisingly highly detailed).

When I've played WoW in the past, I've usually just turned off all public channels, after finding a decent guild - which doesn't take long imo - and done groups with guildies, or played it like a glorified single player game.. Which it kind of is imo.

There is definitely a maturity/hate imbalance compared to most other MMOs, but I think most are right in that it has more to do with total numbers and the accessability of this game to parents etc.

As I've said numerous times though. If Barrens chat is an indication of the future of humanity, we're all doomed to hell.

The community isn't any more immature than any other community. This is a numbers issue. Say you have 200 people and 2 of them are jerks. We have a room that holds 20,000 people in this example as well. Now, we stick these 200 people in the room. The 2 jerks will make minimal noise, while the 198 people converse pleasantly. Even if the 2 jerks get uppity, they can be easily quelled. Now, we fill the room with people and coincidentally the percentages stay the same. Now, even though we have 19,800 people quietly enjoying the game, you also now have 200 jerks in the room. The 200 jerks in the room will cause a much greater ruckus than the 2 jerks did before; even though the percentages are the same. They can even form a large group and cause real trouble.

The trouble jerks cause in a game raises proportionately as more are able to band together. When you have 5 million subs, even at a generous 1% you still have 50,000 jerks. That's a lot of jerks and the mischief they cause can be quite noisy indeed. Since jerks cannot team up with themselves the amount of aggravation they can cause does not raise 1 to 1. Also, one jerk by itself is only going to be able to really aggravate 1 out of ten people. This can be expressed as follows:

First we must find the number of servers:
Wow has 155 servers for 5,000,000 subscribers. Using this as a base we create a comparative ratio:

    155/5,000,000 = x/y

    Where y=the number of subscribers
    and x=undefined

Solve for x to get the number of servers. x must be rounded to the nearest whole number.

    Now we detect aggravation levels:

Where 1 Jerk generates and aggravation level of .1
and where A = the # of jerks
and where N = The number of subs the jerks can aggravate with minimal effort

    (A * .1) * (.5A/x) = N

So 2 Jerks out of 200 users would be

    (2 * .1) * ( 1/1)
    .2 * 1 = 0.2 or negligible aggravation levels

And 200 Jerks out of 20,000 users would be

    (200 * .1) * (100/2)
    20 * 50 = aggravation level of 1000 which is a good 5% of the players

And 50,000 Jerks out of 5,000,000 players is

    (50,000 * .1) * (25,000/155)
5000 * 161.29 = 806,450 or over 16% of the player base at any given time.

So you see, it is simply the number of people playing. The community as a whole is not necessarily immature, it is just people notice a mob of 50,000 people in a city with 5,000,000 people more then they do 2 idiots in a town of 200.
