I would say the continuation of the old MMORPGs is the only reason the genre is still around.
I mean look at WoW Classic, the Everquest progression servers, and all the old games that are actual quality. These are what people would rather play than the free2play cash shop ezmode crop of crap.
Current monetization and design is just utter corporate greed and no passion or quality.
You want to make a good new MMORPG it has to be better than the old stuff, not worse. Not have garbage monetization that removes items you would have played the game to get but instead just give them your credit card.
It has to be a challenge not an ezmode solo stroll cake walk that just exists to take your money. You need to have communities where you can't do everything yourself on one character. You need to actually play the game and have some difficulty and challenge that requires teamwork to overcome not just be handed rewards for logging in.
I want to play a MMORPG that's a virtual world not a virtual storefront. These companies care more about making money than a good game and it's obvious looking at the state of the MMORPG genre.
