I would definitely recommend trying this game out for those who haven't tried it and are interested.
The code-base is set somewhere before The Land of the Dead expansion was released, so top gear is renown rank 80 (sovreign) rather than 100.
The devs have made some changes to the game, compared to live. Tiers 2-4 are combined into a single tier. Tier 1 is now levels 1-15, whilst Tier "4" is now 16-40. In terms of zone capture mechanics, you now have to lock down tier 2, then tier 3, then you can start on tier 4 zones like usual. Most of the time, you're fighting over tier 4 zones, but after a city siege you do get to go fight in some of the lower tier zones, so it keeps things a bit varied.
The other changes they've made are mostly small, like tweaking some balance issues, xp/rr gain, messing with the scenario rotations and stuff (why is gates of ekrund rarely in the rotation!?!?)
Population is quite good on the server.
Lowest I've seen is about 800 people. Highest I've seen is the server cap, 3500. Average is probs around 1600 players (late night EU). Performance / lag is far superior to the live servers, I've been in some keep fights with 600+ players and the game is still playable. Granted, graphics turned down a lot, and you have to be careful which mods you use, but that doesn't affect the gameplay at all.
Whilst 800 people online doesn't sound like a lot, the population is focused into small areas. 99% of the population is either in tier 1 RvR, tier 4 RvR, queuing for scenarios or doing housekeeping in the capitol. The remaining 1% are probably grinding crafting mats, running dungeons or doing epics for gear.
My point is that you can nearly always find groups for doing the main activities in the game. The only thing you'll struggle with would be leveling groups in PvE, but you can just jump on the forums and you'll probs find a group.
My main issue with the game is the same as I had when it was live: vertical progression. The power gaps are real, and very frustrating. Gear is ridiculously important and nearly all the best gear comes from PvP. This means that any time spent not pvping means you're shooting yourself in the foot.
The boost mechanic helps somewhat during the leveling process. I found that when you unlock a new gear set, the boost mechanic will make you pretty competitive with endgamers, but 1 or 2 levels later, your gear hasn't improved so the boost mechanic makes you progressively worse. Once you hit level 40, the boost mechanic stops working and so you are entirely dependant on gear. However, the power gap between RR40-50 and RR70-80 is still crazy, so the game can feel grindy for quite a while, just having to take your punishment whilst the renown trickles in.
Additionally, the best armour really comes from RvR and not scenarios. Whilst you need to do both in order to get everything you want, RvR usually takes priority as it offers the best gear and renown. However, this is a 2-faction game, so if you log on for a night of RvR but your team is massively outnumbered, then you basically have nothing to do.
For those who are going to give the game a go (you don't need original discs or anything, so anyone can try it), please CHOOSE ORDER, then CHOOSE TANK or HEALER.
Destruction usually outnumber order on the server, and order usually lacks a good melee frontline. Destructions tanks, especially Black Orc and Chaos Chosen, simply look way cooler than order's tanks. As a result, Destruction usually has a better melee frontline which will charge and break the order backline. Get a tank to run at a squishy RDPS and that RDPS will usually run away. When 70% of order are squishy RDPS, it means they tend to spend a lot of time running from destro! Can sometimes work when defending, but really difficult to mount a proper attack with so many rdps.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman
I do find the 2 tiered RvR frustrating as the T1 is fun but then you get tossed into the deep end of the pool. You don’t get a chance to really see what the T2 andT3 RvR was like. They get unlocked but just a few hours later they are locked again and everyone is back in T4. I get the reasons... but as someone with a bunch of characters between 15 and 32 it’s frustrating because you really can’t get that RvR gear because the zones are locked.
Still a bunch of fun though.
If I could start over I‘d role order. We went Destro and no way everyone will switch.

I happen to think that they should've lowered the RR even more and put more quality gear in PvE. I said that and I experienced a pogrom! And got permabanned!
That's the only thing I'd suggest. Try to stay out of Dev's way, they can be nasty. Too bad nothing's getting changed without someone speaking up. And I often have that honor.

I think its great that the best gear comes from pvp, but the massive gear gap and gear grind has always turned me off.

Maybe that was the official server, the devs on the private server let people talk freely about suggestions all the time. Even gross infractions (like insulting character names or harassing forum posts to them or other players... yield warnings or 24 hour bans). Getting perma banned is for a GM catching you cheating in game or you have had multiple infractions in the past and continue to violate the rules.
First, if you like PVP, you are basically getting gear by playing the game. It's a group based game for the most part (a very small niche of players roam solo). Joining groups is really easy and maximizes rewards.
In about 1 month, maybe 2 if you're more causual, you will be geared right below the end game city gear. In that time leveling and gearing up, you will not be stomped... you will have a lot of great fights... because this is a group based game.
As far as PVE, very decent gear and rewards from pveing. In fact, unless you want to spend a fortune in the auction house, you'll run the 24 man hardest PQs (i.e. raids) to get talismans for your gear or make money. Decent gear also comes from these for lower renown characters.
Why wait for Camelot Unchained to have large scale pvp (with no lore and no pve), jump into warhammer... it's free and a lot more populated than some of these other games... because it's a concentrated population on one server.

The Devs on this server are really reasonable.
I don’t know much about the devs except that they run a tight ship, but the community was quite bad up until a year and a half ago, so bad I stopped playing actually. I returned about 6 months ago and it has much improved, getting banned because you got on the wrong side of the devs doesn’t sound impossible to me though.
And then I quit playing again, WAR to me is always one of these games where the thought of playing is infinitely cooler than actually doing so. I return regularly but never stay.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
