Ok Whoever told you they have Offline play in an MMORPG must be an idiot.
And all you do is buy a Gamecard (30$) and use that instead of credit card for payment option.
That's what i did.
My build: Sapphire Radeon HD 4850, Asus P5GC-MX/1333 Motherboard, 4gb G.SKILL DDR2 667MHz RAM, Core 2 Duo e7200 CPU, 250gb Western Digital SATA Harddrive, Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit.
You could also play offline games or free MMORPGS.

Lets say you are a pretty casual player, you play about 2 days a week for about 2 hours. That would be 4 hours a week. 4 weeks in a month, thats about 16 hours a month. $15 a month = $1 per hour.
If you don't have a credit card and you think $1 an hour is "to" much, perhaps you should give up on gaming and try to get a better job and/or go back to school to get a better education so that you can get a better job.
I'm not completely sure about this, but you can sign up for you free month by selecting gamecard as your payment option and then just put in a random number in the same format as the gamecard number is supposed to be. Just remember to change it before you free month runs out so that blizzard doesn't catch you for fraud or so.
If you have a holiday where you exchange or receive gifts, ask for a game card. I've been doing this for some time now and have yet to pay for a subscription ^_^
$15/month may seem like a lot, but if you enjoy gaming you'll mostly likely get your money's worth in entertainment. I'm sure you'll spend that on movies and sport events. Lol, I know that I step into a bar without $15 flying out of the wallet.
I always suggest finding a trial that you can play or finding a friend that has the game. I thought I read somewhere that one of the gaming magazines is hosting a trial of WoW currently.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
Pcgamer is the magazine that has the free trail. But as I understood it he has allready bought the game, but didn't know that he needed a creditcard to signup.
I know I didn't have to give any credit card details for the first month. I remember logging into the game one day and it said I had no active account (because my free month was up). I put in credit details after that. That was the Euro edition though but the US one should be the same.
