Crowfall: Worth $50 to play the upcoming beta?

MightyUncleanMightyUnclean Member EpicPosts: 3,531
I know there probably isn't that much known yet about how much of leap forward the beta will be, but do you guys think that $50 is reasonable to get a taste of playing the game at this point?  I'm usually not willing to buy into early access, but this looks like it will probably release relatively soon.  Well, relative to all the other MMOs like it.

Beta will be free to all that sign up.  Invites will happen in phases based on your group number.  The game that you will see at beta is like 90-95% of what it will be at release.  My suspicion is that it will release this fall so within the next few months.

Is it worth $50 to get in a few weeks early?  Only you can answer that?

I bought it a couple of months ago and it was worth it to me. Whether the game is actually worth playing or you like it is another matter.

Its severely lacking in the polish department - for example I had to search the internet to find out how to leave a group, and when I found the /commands page it was obscured by the icons of the group I was in.

However, it has just implemented a tutorial for new players which is awesome. It will quickly get you to level 18 and introduce you to some of the key parts of the game. There aren't really any good/comprehensive guides for the game out yet so this was a godsend.

By the way, the game is currently packed with players so that is another plus for playing now I suppose. I haven't gotten to the pvp part yet, but it looks pretty good when I watch streamers. The crafting is quite indepth and interesting, but again I have only just touched the surface.

It seems to be a very group focused game though, so if you don't like playing in groups/guilds it might not be the right game.

Except that...they still haven't reached the final wipe meaning no retention of progression, which it makes it not worth playing even for free, at least to me.

    YMMV.

If you plan on buying the game at release then its worth getting now. Now if you are undecided then get into the beta. If you want to buy you can get 10% off I think if you use a referral code.  I caught it on sale about a year ago for $35.

Yeah it's very packed in the starter city right now.  I expect they will spin up some extra servers tonight.  They currently have 2 of the newbie/training campaigns and 1 campaign for the 3 faction PvP (The Infected) and another for the FFA/Guild Wars (The Dregs).

I'm getting about 55 FPS out in the world with decent graphics settings.  To me the key is RAM.  I'm running 32GB now.  I think you need at least 16 to get a decent frame rate.  There is also a post someone made about how to tweak your client to get better FPS but I haven't done those steps yet.

I have 16 atm, I’ve tweaked most of the in game settings but still hover around 20.. dipping lower in the outpost but the areas are definitely over crowded. No way I would be able to participate in large scale pvp though and my system should be more than enough. It’s beta though and having fun regardless.
Yeah.  Whats your video card and memory on it?  I'm running a pretty old 1060 but it has 6GB RAM.  Last piece of my PC I need to upgrade.

I've always wanted to buy into the current test, but kept reading on their forums that it was "dead" or not worth playing at this point. I should have probably taken that with a grain of salt based on these replies here. Probably a Darkfall forum situation where all the angry people are posting there.

I think the issue was that everyone who backed it had access to play for years. Once the newness wears off and knowing your progress will be wiped I think most just logged in when there was a big patch and then faded away again.   Then they also split the population by having a Test and a Live server.

I know that I would just login every few months, level a bit to see what changed and then logout.  I played Rift Alpha intensively and by the time it released I was burned out.  No more of that for me!

They claim to have about 500k signups.  Right now the newbie servers are full because they are setup for a few hundred and have a small landmass.   It will be interesting to see how many they spin up tonight.

That and not wanting to burn out before release are the only reasons I am not playing it anymore till release

They already wiped from alpha to this version and that was necessary but painful

I'm not putting any money down until after a final release and some reviews and game play videos. I do have to say it does look like they have an actual game here which is way more than some other kickstarters have shown. They really need to optimize and polish this up hopefully that happens in the beta. I'll see how it does and might pick it up a month after release if it gets glowing reviews and smooths things out.

No. The game is still missing.
It may be worth to play somewhere down the line, if the game seriously catches popularity. But not at the moment. You best wait.

Well, lets be accurate here.  In order to play in the beta for I believe a month, all you had to do was sign up.  100% free.   If you bought any package (cheapest is now $50 I think) you would have had access to the game for the last 5 years or so...

I'm not defending the game (I can't get my group to even consider playing it right now as we are obsessed with Return of Reckoning for the last few months), but facts actually matter, and anyone who signed up for the beta test can actually get in to the beta for free.

As someone that bought the Alpha a while back, has a whole clan and Waged Wars, in this, all still in Pre-Alpha, which was hilarious as you run around with a whole world full of "Placement Graphic" or "No graphic" on everything.. I can sincerely say this game is worth 50 bucks to get into and a whole lot more.

And my advice as it were, would be to get in now, join a guild, and start to build that network for when shit gets real in Beta.

Fair enough, but MMOs are now orientated to bringing in players far too early, into uncompleted games. Once there you are tempted to start putting cash over. Your argument it is free is the same argument we hear about F2P games. So factually correct, much like walking into a casino with a ticket to play some fruit machines would be "free".

Not sure how this is any different from any other "open beta" that has happened for decades?  They serve two purposes.  The first is to stress the servers and the second is to market the game...

And like it or not, this game is not really "uncompleted".  It is very close to release and I expect that once they roll through all the testers that a release date is announced for this year.  What remains is really just performance tweaks and maybe some tweaks to crafting/combat... but we are talking tweaks and not full system replacement.   What we see now is 95% what we will get at release.

It is not a matter of "like it or not", if the game launches this year (not some form of early access) I will applaud it as KS MMO's need a good launch. One final point, I hope we see a wipe just before launch, but as the concept of a fair playing field has been lost to the £$'s that may be just wishful thinking.
