This won't be an opinion shared by many but I think any new space MMORPG needs to go back to the lo-fi roots and focus on features more than gfx. I'm not even talking about EQ2 gfx I'm saying take it back to EQ1, UO or SWG to ensure that the game will have features and progression that can last tens of thousands of hours. Gfx appeasement for MMO's has been the greatest hindrance to gameplay cause devs are always focused on maintaining a certain level of visual appeal for the "that's ugly" crowd. Deep systems in large worlds with close to infinite amount of ways to play is closer to the DND origin of MMO's than the visually appealing shallow path they ended up taking.

A lo-fi Star Citizen or New World would've been out already with way more features than what the actual ones will be getting. They will dik around with visuals for years though to make it appealing for Twitch streaming purposes but imagine what kind of game could be created without worrying about that stuff. New World as a REAL colonial UO-esque MMORPG. When young people are playing OS Runescape to fill that MMORPG void there is a portion of the gaming community that is crying out for a certain something but that call is going unanswered.

I have a hard time seeing how BSG could work as an MMO, at least if constrained by the reboot. It could definitely work as a reimagining that allowed for things Edward James Olmos said he'd quit over, such as aliens. Although they could do what the showrunner from Mr. Robot might(or might not) be doing with his upcoming show. Which is to just go with the theme "this has all happened before and will happen again". This would allow for a reimagining in a different planet/galaxy/timeline. But that would be a hard sell as a game.

As far as my nerdy choices, it would be:

    1) Babylon 5 - I'm not sure when the best time to set it would be - it would require some creative license.
    2) Farscape - I'd set it after the Peacekeeper Wars miniseries. This was a time where the two major powers were pretty balanced and could allow for earth to be included somehow.
    3) Stargate - I wasn't a huge fan of the show but they have the best foundation for doing this

I have been dying for a B5 MMO for far too many years. I wish JMS would do a KS program with some intrepid engineers. I would back it for sure! There is so many ways to go with a B5 MMO it is not even funny...

STO is so messed up with the F2P paradigm and gamblebox mechanics it makes me want to cry.

Unfortunately Joe only has the Film rights to Babylon 5, I don't believe he even owns merchandising rights to the film but I may be wrong. Anything else would require the OK and backing of WB. And according to Joe, they want nothing to do with B5 anymore. He even offered to work on getting the show upscaled, for free, and was declined.

Andromeda would make a good MMO. Diverse races, always on the brink of war, and a good storyline IMO.

Stargate and BSG huge yes from me! They should redo Star Trek and make a better game as the one now is horrible.

Good article and some good ideas from posters, who have nabbed all my best choices. So going to put out some other possibilities.

    Planet of the Apes
    Mad Max
    The Expanse
    New version of The Matrix
    Starship Troopers
    Altered Carbon
    The Fifth Element
    Flash Gordon
    Barbarella

No Mass Effect = bad list.

    No Mass effect before Andromeda.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

Seriously, all those boring universes without even putting Warhammer 40k to the first spot?

    Born from blood,
    trained to kill,
    ready to die,
    but never will!

A Shadowrun mmorpg would be great for me. I think I even commented in a thread like this like 10 years ago about it.

I loved the pen and paper version when I was a kid. There have been some ok-ish isometric games that almost captured the vibe for me. But I've always wanted a team to fully commit to a great MMORPG based on that universe.

Even though I never played Cyberpunk 2077 pen and paper, I feel really lucky that someone is tackling something in that genre in a serious way.

Dune was mentioned, I like that, but I would LOVE a Warhammer 40k MMO.

I find 40K humans to be waaay too edgy for my tastes.  And thus I can't really feel immersed in it.

I've played SWTOR in the past & still think it has some of the best class storyline arcs in an mmo, but I considered it more SW than scifi mmo given the very limited space options. I hear better things lately about SWTOR but I left soon after I had invested a substantial of time & resources into my Companions & the game then changed Companion mechanics which nullified all my efforts & had no compensation.

Not to derail you, but they didnt nerf the companions, just increased the "affection cap" and made it do more at high levels. It was crazy actually, with a rank 50 companion you were basically invincible if they were set to heal.

Babylon 5, what a show, what a story, I would love to see a really well made B5 game, though I think it might be better suited to an RPG, or a Homeworld style game than an mmo.

I think two others should be mentioned - the Shannara series from Terry Brooks and the Earthsea from Ursala K LeGuin. Both are deep, complex and could be amazing if done right, crap if not.

Shannara with it's complex of of magic, evil, science and mystery as well as all the different races, would be amazing to play.

The Earthsea could be just as amazing with it's balance of magic versus realism/fear.

In that case "you are welcome!"

    You're going to love it.

The first link is a guy I usually go to for movie reviews and he has a decent Alien Isolation review. The 2nd guy I like for his game reviews.
