I don't see mmorpgs along a timeline. I see then more like panning for gold. When you pan for gold, mostly you find mud and rocks. But occasionally there is  a nugget. And there is always the potential for, and the dream of,  a nugget. That's what keeps you panning, even when you have nothing but mud and rocks at the moment.
Genre's been pretty much like this for awhile, at least in my opinion.

They say it's always darkest before the dawn.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

In relation to Wizardry, recently watched High Score, excellent documentary, my only complaint, it was only 6 episodes.

Anyway at one point a developer said it best, not quoting verbatim, it was something along the lines of

'they (publisher) didn't know anything about games, they just wanted us to make one.' ...and they still don't, but think they do.

Why and how amazing worlds were born. Developer love, passion.

Then greed entered and suits come up with what they think are "clever" tactics to make peeps spend, spend, spend.

Cash Shops, my ultimate favorite was a single player game and walk up to quest giver and was being nickle and dime'd in game to buy the quest, WTF that's 100% BS.

Limited bag space ESO, force you to sub which bothers me but at the same time doesn't as if i'm playing any mmo i just sub the f up anyway, not going to try and dance around the bs.

This is why i'm glad to be back to dedicated to two mmorpg's. Wow r/c pay my sub and play, SWG:L no sub but i donate monthly anyway.

Pay your sub and earn is still a viable business model, for greedy mofo's it's not, specifically when you have whales running around buying chit all the time.

There's a lot of unhappy campers in MMORPG gaming, and I have to think that even the happy gamers are feeling a bit threatened by the lack of new games and overall stagnating genre.

So I think maybe things got a little heated, and they deleted and closed it.
That thread was doomed from the start.

Well its been 16 years since our last good MMO....The genre is so bad people even paid to go back to a reboot of that game.
If that is the case, why are you still here?
Well there are football fans who watch football and still think it was better when it was not professional, better before the premiership, better when half your team could not come from anywhere in the world, better when tackles were not so heavily regulated and so on. Just because you think something has been lost does not mean does not mean you throw what you loved in the bin.

For me, there has not been a good MMORPG released since ESO, but I am ever the optimist.
Everyone is entitle to their opinion. To me, ESO is a clusterfuuk and I did play it during alpha/beta and one month when it started and left because it was so bloody boring.

They made the big mistake not to include One Tamriel at the beginning.
I was like you and after being in beta, I didn't even buy. I came back after they made quite a few changes and introduced One Tamriel, and I was hooked.
ESO at release was just another sub-par WoW clone with linear progression.
ESO now is a whole different game.
We all have different opinions about when was the last good MMO; it was ESO for me too, I guess what most of us has in common is its been awhile since a new one as good as our last good MMO was released. Maybe New World will change all that but I doubt it.

That's a pretty good analogy, @Amathe.  That's what the players are hoping for, certainly, that rare nugget of a game that ticks all their personal boxes.

But the developers seem to be operating with a different paradigm.  They want a cult to follow them and give all their worldly goods to them, believing this set of developers is the purveyor of the truth.  Their game will be the one spaceship that offers eternal salvation to the hoard, and endless riches to the developer.

One day, that spaceship will come.  Only, I don't believe that for a moment.  Instead of "To Serve Mankind", a tome benefiting the world, it will be just another cookbook.

Agree Rhoklaw, a guild is a big player at times. EQ2 golden years rocked that game so hard becasue i met the right peeps, SWL again the only reason stopped was that E10 eventually became too easy, but again becasue i met the right peeps, I'm sure a big player in my return to retail wow was all due to the amazing players i met in Classic, whom play both, now i play both, so glad they recruited me in classic, i had my son with me and we got the classic experience ten fold, we had so much fun and i now understand why wow was so popular, my gawd what a great time, overall EQ2 golden years was for sure more my thing.

    Agree also

Best times I ever had with an MMORPG was because of the guild not the game. The fun ended quickly when the guild leader resigned and gave leadership to the server first faction of the guild.

Could it also be possible that many here, by getting older, have also become a bit "bitter" and are expecting some sort of Holy Grail that actually has never and will never exist ?

About ESO, it's hard to recover after a mediocre launch, they can be thankful they had the strong Elder Scrolls fan base at the beginning. Another reason why I personally didn't play ESO back at release is because at that moment, GW2 was the better game for me between the two, and I can't afford playing several MMORPGs at the same time. This has been reversed after One Tamriel.

New World has a lot of potential, a good base with a stable and powerful engine (Lumberyard), an original setting instead of the usual medieval times, and they seem wise enough so far to not rush out an unfinished and/or incomplete game. They also made another change I appreciate, they removed forced FFA PvP.
Not to mention it's a western developer, so we avoid all the annoying parts of asian design and "manga" graphics and animations, and they have the money to finish the game and support it.
I am basing my "I doubt it" on the hit to miss ration alone, I don't really follow games in development. Until NW launches we won't know and to pick up on what you said about ESO, we might not know for several months after that.

If you do leave Delete, know there is no hard feelings for you in any ways. I enjoyed disputing your miss information on Pantheon with facts and quotes from the devs. As much as you hate the game, you have made allot of people take a second look and some have backed the game. So in some strange way you have had a positive impact. I did take a break from this site as well. I had my reasons and you have yours.

Same for us in classic the guild leader was so good at the whole RP, running drills, my son and i had such a blast.

The leader knew many peeps and had high end alliance friends be part of our drills. I mean there we are several hundred strong marching through orgrimmar, and outside along the roads he would have them scattered and just stand there and the leader was teaching us control, ok group 2 attack, man it may not sound like it but if you're not in group 2 and you see an alliance just standing there, almost impossible to not attack.

Sneaking up on alliance territories for raids, never ever forget Redridge raid again hundreds of us ever so carefully making a massive thick wall just behind the hill, all quiet af, and then the guild leader doing such amazing af rp, going hold, hoooold, hoooooooold, ATTACK!!!

The fucking shock you could see in the alliance like they all f'ing froze you could feel the

    O.
    M.
    F.
    G.

from them lol, slaughter!!! Then word spreads on their side and like the entire alliance population comes in and it's just the most amazing time.

When we were out trapping hunter squads, one night he had my son be the bait and he loved it, la de da i'm just a solo player out here harvesting away minding my own business yep just me not bothering anyone, what's this who are these mean bad alliance people i better run for my life and hide behind that hill SURPRISE MOTHER FUCKERS!!!

    Omg the good times.

I log on this morning and find Delete's thread was closed, looking over the posts I have to ask why? Unless some rule breaking posts where removed it is rather odd.

The fact some of us do not put our cheer leaders outfit on every morning and jump around telling everyone how wonderful modern MMOs are is hopefully not yet against the sites ToS. :)

I have no idea why it was closed. Presumably any that broke the rules will have been notified of their misconduct.

Heh, I expect they don't care about our MMORPG preferences one way or the other. and are mainly content we continue to come here to discuss them.

Let's be honest, they've been giving us more leeway now than ever before, one has to really push their luck to get banned and rarely are threads closed.

Just try posting on the Pantheon reddit sometime if you want a reminder of how things can be.

Why was it closed?  Because far too many people are unable to simply ignore a poster they find annoying and instead feel compelled to "tell the teacher" on them.

Since the site redesign years ago I have not reported one single post other than spammers etc...   and there is only one person who made my ignore list in all this time.  But some folks feel threatened by what someone else types and thus spam "report" as some sort of way to "win"...
