And oh yes, I'm having a tossup between FFXI and now this possibly.. any idea? I'm more about the grouping but like to solo every once in a while just to get away.. is there much crafting nowadays.. any fishing or whatnot? I just came back from playing a 60 hunter tauren on a pvp server and it just seemed lackluster at higher levels.. I don't know.. should I just download the trial and give it a shot now?

Yup, give it a shot. Like I said before you'll have to bare through the first while until you like the game enough to pick up Catacombs, as most people play in this new content. As to comparing to FFXI, while I havn't even played it, I can tell you that if you like PvP then just go for this one. The PvP is amazing, and hardly existant in FFXI if at all.
Let me tell you a little DAoC story. I just logged off my level 44 Warrior on Gareth, I was in Leirvik (level 40-44 battleground). My realm (Midgard) held the keep the whole time, defending against the Hibs and Albs outside. It was a real blast to be able to run out and get some of the not-so-bright ones to follow me near the door where my buddies can pop out of the keep and we can rip em apart. Even just watching the Hibs and Albs fight was cool. At one point there were enough Albs that they broke down the door, and were up on the second floor trying to break through a wall of Mids to get to the Jarl (kill this dude and the keep is your realms). I loved the back and forth battles from the frontlines of both realms, and I'm sure the Albs were getting pestered by Hibs outside.
Keep in mind that I havn't even hit level 50 yet, so I have never experienced the real PvP aspect of this game. And I am loving it as it is! I still stick by my point, if you're thinking about giving the game a try, don't wait any longer. And I'm not some kind of DAoC salesmen. ALSO: People who want to buy the game - DAoC and Shrouded Isles (expansion) are FREE to download. All you need to buy is the Catacombs expanion! It works without the ToA expansion that isn't even active on the classic servers.
I strongly recommend anyone starting up to join up on the Classics, as they are young with lots of people (but have been around long enough to develop a nice economy and all that fun stuff ). Anyway I feel like I'm repeating myself, so I'll leave it at that.
Originally posted by Arremus Ok, yupyup the RvR etc does indeed sound awesome!(Yeah... WoW.. sit in a Battlegrounds queue for 3 hours, or if you flag, you've got a 90% chance of just getting obliterated by some tools 20 levels above you.. Oh the fun)Ok, so what about getting money. Will it take me 3 months to catch up to those already playing, to be able to afford anything? How do I get new gear. I want a nice new staff and a robe, or whatever I'd wear as a Priest type (as I always play), so how would I go about getting that? Are there plenty of 'young' people about for me to be able to link up with and group with? Can't think of anything else at the moment. Thanks in advance, and for the very informative post by Julian.
It won't take any time at all to be able to compete on a Classic server with Catacombs. After TD'ing from level 40-43 I got enough gold to buy over 2k aurulite which got me 5 pieces of level 50 Aurulite armor. This is only one route of many that you could take. I did it because the bonuses are alright until I get a lot more money and it looks cool.
I'll be able to wear this armor til 50, when I do my epic armor quest and hopefully by then I'll have enough money to start buying my final set of gear, probably an assortment of drop armor and crafted. Like I said, you can easily compete in the cheaper gear but there will be lots of room to improve it
For the levels up to 40 I was still new to the game so I did a lot of questing to get item rewards that I used. Wasted a lot of time but it was fun and the items were OK. There are tons of different routes you can take, and there is always aurulite sets every 10 levels for the lazy people like me
The game has a great in-game market, with a search and all those goodies and it's very active so you won't be finding a deserted market or anything bad like that
And like Julian (think it was him) said, there are always lots of people to play with at all levels. On Classic there is no /level 20 command (previously people with level 50's could use this to get their new toons to level 20) so along with a lot of new people joining the servers there are always alts to play with. Have fun
Yes, but are there many farmers/bots.. from what I read.. of many people, that they're having those kinds of problems.. and I just may take you up on your offer.. would you be able to spot me a little cash/equipment to help me out in it, please. If I don't find it to my liking, I swear I will return to you.. I'll talk to you in a bit though, brother wants on.. thanks for the heads up, I just may give it another shot after all these years. (Gotta try everything once )
As for the botters/farmers, name a high profile MMO that isn't plagued with them.. I find the best cure is to get yourself into a good, supportive guild. That way you can divert the need to buy off the market, or to get pick up groups to do quests etc.
Another question to the players: I mentioned to a longtime gamer friend that I was thinking of trying this (I am now downloading the huge trial...). She said "Oh god, I hated that game. It was such a grind and I mean a huuuuuuge grind. All you do is grind." (direct quote from MSN hehe)
Now from what I read, this grind was pre-Catacombs, and it's now a lot better? Is what I thought I read earlier anyways, just wanted to confirm this either way.
Anyways, the next day or two, once the trial is finally downloaded, I'll try it for myself! More curious to know about the grind so I know whether to try to tempt my friend back to DAoC!
Peace.

I might be lookin' to hit up the guy with the orc on his icon's guild.. is Catacombs that great? Hrmm.. whatever. Might as well get crackin'.
And sorry for poor sentence structure, I just woke up no more than 15 minutes ago.. had a nightmare Viva la Bam style where Bam showed April a deer with natural markings that said 'woman' in cursive on the side of it, then a dog went and chased at it and a female elephant seen it and ran after it as well.. eventually they ran through a river and I was too awestruck to even move.. because it changed its target to me, I originally thought about climbing a fence (really high up, don't know what it belong to) but never acted on it.. as I was about to get gored, I ducked and shielded my face and a sniper short it in the eye socket, into its brain and fell into a cold slump beside me... I just told my parents and my dad asked if I was doing LSD.. hah. (no I don't, not any drugs nor smoking)
1. Bots and Hackers. This is not a blizzard game so such issues are minimal. Then constantly ban those who are caught cheating. I can't say I have really encountered it. The only hack that I know of is radar. Bots are allowed. Bots I think become more popular because people stoped playing healers (for lots of reasons). It only has an affect for assassins. Most other people will want someone just playing 1 character. On the classic server they have put range resitrctions on buffs so this has discouraged a lot of bots. You will still see it in PvE, but it is not useful in most situations of RvR.
2. Grind. Well let me put it this way, DAOC has generally been the least amount of grind of the mmorpg. ToA really added the grind to the game. I think the reason people then, and now, consider it a grind is because of how long it used to level. I would say my first level 50 took about 50 days in game to get that high. My latest level 50 (starting from level 1) took 9-10 days in game played. And I spent probably 1 day of that in the battlegrounds at least.
If you want to level fast then do catacombs quests. If you want to be more casual just make sure you have made 1-2 levels per week and then you will get a free level every week. So it is easy to level in the game now and doesn't really feel like a grind until level 48 or so. At that point you start to run out of quests and just really want to hurry up and get 50 so you will 'grind' for a few hours to make the last 1-2 levels.
Originally posted by JulianDracos Bots I think become more popular because people stoped playing healers (for lots of reasons).
Would you mind elaborating on this please Julian? Seeing as Healer is always my primary class, and usually what I find the most enjoyment playing, why is it that people are not playing them as much?
Am 70% through the trial download now. Should be trying it tomorrow. Will probably go out and grab a Cata expansion too, for the heck of it.
Thanks in advance, peace.
"(The) Iraqi people owe the American people a huge debt of gratitude." - George W Bush. Oh. My. God.
The classic servers are full of healers at the moment so I would not worry about that. But here is my experience in the first 2 years of DAOC which compares to most other games.
If you spec as a healer in DAOC you have little solo potential. Therefore you are always looking for a group. However if you spec in a different way - to not be the primary healer - then you are better at solo but people won't want to group with you.
So here is how it was with a friend of mine. He speced his Druid carefully so he could solo, fight in RvR, and be ok to group with. However, at high level no one would group with him because his heals weren't good enough. So he had to retrain to have the best heals. Now he cannot solo. Further, the only thing he can do is heal, rez, and buff. While healing is certainly a challenge, for many people it is a very boring job. They would like some ability to be more involved in the action than just waiting for someone to be hurt.
Then you have the complainers. I have been in groups, even as recently as a few months ago, although it has become a rare occurance where the healer is blammed for everything. The reason people died is because the healer wasn't doing his job.
Because of these reasons, a significant number of people stoped playing healers. This lead to people getting bots. Once people got bots those who were trying to play healers had a harder time getting into a group to level.
Healers are always wanted in any group. Most people would prefer to have a live healer instead of a bot. However, finding someone who enjoys playing the healer can be a challenge on the older servers.
*sigh* I spent all day yesterday and all last night downloading 1.8gigs of the Trial, then today after locating Catacombs, get the copy home, open it up, and sure enough... a set of 14 day trial discs included... *laughs*
So be it. Going to give this game a good try. It has to be better than WoW, EQ2 etc. I can't not be... hehe.
One problem I did find when playing the basic trial this morning. NPCs were randomly disappearing mid conversation, then reappearing after I moved the camera around etc. If I was part way through receiving a quest, I was unable to talk to them again and/or advance what I needed to do. Anyone else have this prob?
Hopefully the Cata upgrade will fix these sorts of probs.
Anyways, off to install and give it a go! Peace.
"(The) Iraqi people owe the American people a huge debt of gratitude." - George W Bush. Oh. My. God.
Almost sounds like you have a router firewall problem, you'll know you do if you start seeing all sorts of animals/players/NPC's frozen then appearing somewhere else etc.
And don't worry about people hacking in DAoC. It's not bad enough for you to quit because of it (I personally don't care - the radar users will get what they've got coming to em). Also playing a healing class is always welcomed as you rarely ever have too many healers. This sounds like one of your prime concerns so check out the healing classes on all 3 realms and maybe you can decide what realm you want to play that way.
And sorry I could've told you that Cata comes with DAoC + SI but I didn't realize you were going to pick it up first
Glad to hear you did buy it, and I hope you love this game as much as I do.
Originally posted by Zhanghia I might be lookin' to hit up the guy with the orc on his icon's guild.. is Catacombs that great? Hrmm.. whatever. Might as well get crackin'.
Assuming you are talking to me (looks at WC3 orc avatar), or I may be crazy and you're not talking to me at all, I can tell you that if you are going to play DAoC, there is no reason not to play with Catacombs. It offers A LOT of new stuff and zones and everyone has it so you'd be missing out on group play (except for RvR).
Yes, you Goob-er. :P Anyway, the free trial only has shrouded isle and the regular game. No Trials of Atlantis or Catacombs.. and Catacombs -requires- all the expansions before it so I'd be 'forced' to buy the full game and catacombs which would run me up 39.99 according to the Mythic store.. (the platinum and catacombs) or trials of atlantis and catacombs (29.99 but without the free 30 days and you'd have to download it everytime you wanted to install it, whereas the 30 days pays for itself) but I'm just saying that you can't just -buy- the catacombs -_-
One last thing, if I buy the platinum edition of the game, and I use my trial, do I still get the free thirty days or does it poof? (Yes, I've had games that have done that.. very mean of them, where I'd have to make a new account just to get the free 30 days)
Since every account is created with a CD Key, you can only use a free trial once per game account, since each free trial/retail game comes with it's own CD Key, and you can only register the CD Key once to your account. So you'd have to make a new account to get the 30days free play. Or discard that 30day trial and subscribe when your current trial ends.
Classics servers are great because of PURE RvR/PvP Battlgrounds. Which many preferred, was how DAOC used to be, before Trials of Atlantis spoiled the flow of RvR. None of that timesink nonsense to get Master levels and artifacts just to bring into RvR. Another reason Classic servers are so good, is that people cannot buff you unless they are in your group, and also, all buffs now have range limitations, so if you move too far away from your Healer/Shaman/Bard etc, the buffs will cancel, making it harder for people with buffbots to take them into RvR, since you'll have to take your buffbots with you to keep the buffs active, and you can't leave your buffbot at the other end of the zone in the safety of your realm guards anymore. Ofcourse, that will never stop determined people to bring several of their buffbots into RvR to get the advantage, to make up for their lack of skills, mindyou.
1. Catacombs DOES NOT require you to have ToA. The removed that requirement 1-2 months prior to the release of the classic servers.
2. It is a total lie to say classic servers are "pure" RvR. It certaintly is not how it was before ToA. Here is just a small list of those things that have changed: An entirely different frontier and battlegrounds, new realm abilities, new classes, tower are there and can be razed, keeps can now have holes knocked in them, there is an island out there now, and buffs would not drop if you moved out of range.
ToA is not the problem and never has been. There are some things such as archers and assassins having a hard time killing some casters, but people need to take a realistic look at what the problem is. NF made the game far more about range. Thus giving casters an archers advantages. But the reason why people get owned out in RvR is because of the other group being high RR. Only twice can I recall being dead because of a ToA - once when I fought in the middle of a storm, and second when I got turning into a bug.
The biggest problem with RvR comes down to realm rank abilities. If you are high enough and do them correctly you have a far more significant advantage than someone who is ML 10. I am not saying ToA does not have an affect on RvR but it certainly is not what caused the problem.
The reason classic servers are popular is because they are new. This means lots of people to play with (other servers have population issues), the belief that RvR would be better, amd not having the grind through ToA.
Why new people should play on the classic servers is simple - it is the best place to learn the game and have people to group with. I would like it is 1000's of people decided to play the original but I am realistic.
ToA problem is that it is a long and boring grind. It is not necessary for you to finish it all to be able to compete, but you will want some things from ToA and just doing a few is boring enough.
Originally posted by Zhanghia One last thing, if I buy the platinum edition of the game, and I use my trial, do I still get the free thirty days or does it poof? (Yes, I've had games that have done that.. very mean of them, where I'd have to make a new account just to get the free 30 days)
Let me tell you what I did: I tried this game out around this time last year with the trial, liked it, and went out and bought Platinum edition. This was before Catacombs came out. I quit a few months later because a lot of my IRL friends were picking up WoW and I thought it looked fun.
This time around, I created a new account using the downloaded 14-day trial. What I wasn't aware of was that my Platinum edition was linked to my OLD account. So I had an option - to abandon my new level 10 Warrior (Big deal eh?) and renew my old account where I had the ToA expansion active (the only thing I would be missing out on) or not worry about it since I was playing on the Classic servers. I kept my new account, and bought Catacombs which is now linked to my second account.
So I'm not even using my Plat edition, it isn't needed. If I ever want to make a toon on the regular servers I will just pick up a copy of ToA for 10 bucks. Oh, and with Catacombs installed you aren't restricted from anything ToA offered!
What about the classes/races and if I eventually went to a normal server. I'd be handicapped because then I'd have to buy ToA if I ever decided to get that stuff.. I don't think I have much choice -- I'll just have to get the platinum edition 'and' catacombs if I even want to enjoy this game and not have to worry..
ToA did not add classes only races. However not having ToA does not prevent you from playing any classes or races. It simply means that certain zones of the game you will not be able to go into on the regular server.
As I said, I'd be handicapped if I didn't buy ToA so I have to wait until I have money for the platinum version, then get that so for the next 12 days I'm boredbecause I know that leveling my character will be a waste since I'll just have to make a new account.
Goob, you're never even on 'Trotts'. Whenever Iw as on, I always failed to see you online, yes, I know. It's Gareth and Midgar -- Not trying to sound emo or anything but what's the choice if there is no social to the part of an MMORPG.
Havn't been playing him as much the past few days, as I am waiting for my next free level. Once you gain a level, after 7 days you get a free one until level 47. I'm taking advantage of this and having fun on another character.
Instead of making another toon on Mid/Gareth, I wen't to an older server to play on a different realm, Hib/Lancelot. Partly because I wanted to see if ToA worked on my non-ToA installed client and also because I think it'd be more interesting to try a different realm for a 2nd character. And I don't mind PvE grinds at level cap to improve your character so I'm going to give ToA a try.
For the record, I was in the ToA zones last night so it does work. I bet if you just buy Catacombs and install it overtop the DAoC + SI discs that comes with Catacombs OR the downloaded trial, you can play the game with all expansions. That's what I have.
Unfortunately if this works you don't get the free 30 days of playing from Platinum, which is valued 15 bucks. But you'll save the 30-40 dollars from buying Plat and IMO it's worth it.
But hey, you might feel better having all the copies of DAoC anyway. I have Platinum but it's linked to another account, so I'm not even using it.

(the platinum and catacombs) or trials of atlantis and catacombs (29.99 but without the free 30 days and you'd have to download it everytime you wanted to install it, whereas the 30 days pays for itself) but I'm just saying that you can't just -buy- the catacombs -_-
Goop, what is your account name so you can be referred?
My account name is Tocyounger
What about the classes/races and if I eventually went to a normal server. I'd be handicapped because then I'd have to buy ToA if I ever decided to get that stuff.. I don't think I have much choice -- I'll just have to get the platinum edition 'and' catacombs if I even want to enjoy this game and not have to worry..
