If I am in a guild I am usually at everyone else's pace, if I start off with them. I do get left behind when I get involved in housing or some other activity but it does not bother me in the least.
I prefer to be ahead, but time constraints have put me back in the line.
Still, there are a lot of benefits to following the leaders. Every mistake they make is a mistake you will avoid. Less headaches, less wasted time, etc.

I tend to go in this direction as well, and enjoy the guides that other, often better, players, make to help me understand the game.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
