In a way yes, but also... wasn't his work a framework for others to create stories. Doesn't his legacy live on if it's kept popular?
It does, but merely being kept alive through popularity has some downsides, too. For instance, many (many, many, many) aspiring fantasy writers think that it is necessary to have full languages, a massive detailed world, histories for every single sentient race and appendixes out the wazoo. The important thing is the story, the characters, the actions they perform and the decisions they make. Why do they do this? Mostly because Tolkien did it.
Fine if the memory inspires others to write. Not so fine if it only inspires imitation.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
As a grumpy reclusive gamer, I know there is minimal chance of me playing it. I doubt it'll ever make it to release, and I doubt if it does that it'll be anything worth my time. Already set to be free2play and developed in the east, that alone is pretty much a guarantee it'll be garbage (for my tastes).
Additionally, if they're trying to tie it in with a new TV series, that means building the game around a story, which is a mistake.

FYI .. Standing Stone Games does not have a long term deal in place with MEE they have a year-year revenue based contract ...
So technically it could end anytime
I'm curious where you got this info. They seem to be very secret when it comes to the terms of their contract.
I'd guess they are pretty safe until MEE license another developer to make a new (overlapping) LOTR MMO. It would probably still stick around until the replacement launched, ala SWG and SWTOR.

Its just something , I know ..
So MEE gets a % of gross income? Or is it technically off of profit? Just curious.
Amazon pulled out of the deal in April. BUT Atheou is the one with the game license.
Since they're owned by Tencent I don't think they actually need Amazon to publish the game. I think they can do it themselves or via one of the companies they own majority stock in (Funcom is one).
It has dropped off the radar since Amazon pulled out of the deal, but that doesn't necessarily mean the whole game was canceled.
It's a good thing. I don't want them to rush this. Take your time Amazon and ignore the jabs. One of my favorite IPs of all time and it deserves all the time it needs to get it right.
I sure hope they go their own way with this game. The Amazon show will likely be a crapfest of modern philosophy injected into the Tolkien world as with most shows today.

Yes we know that. It was reported as if it was Amazon's game to cancel. It wasn't. They were neither the main developers nor the licensed studio to do it. Athlon games which is a subsidiary of Leyou, which is now owned by Tencent were the main devs as well as the ones who have the license from MEE.
Amazon pulling out did not necessarily kill it although there have been no new announcements from Athlon since April.

I'm still waiting for the show. I didn't even know there would be a game. I will be thrilled if this project comes to life. I just love the Lord of the Rings movie and would love to play such a game. I can imagine how happy all the fans of the film will be. By the way, there is an excellent Tolkien forum for fans of the work of the writer Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings. All fans of his work gather on this forum and discuss their favorite characters, favorite moments from the movie, favorite parts, etc. I found out about this forum entirely by accident. After that, I started hanging out here all the time.

Welcome to the forums!
First I thought you might be an adbot, but I read that Tolkien forum myself!

If the game is set in the 2nd Age, that means no hobbits.
Not necessarily, since it's uncertain what did they do during SA. Maybe they were already around the Anduin, maybe arrived later... it's undisclosed by Tolkien.
Of course, most likely the game is gone for good, since the press release neither AGS nor Athlon/Leyou said anything about it, so we'll never know if it had hobbits...

I know Tolkien probably wasn't thinking about evolution when he wrote his books, but.......
The second age ended, what, 3100 years before the LotR storyline? That isn't enough time for an entirely new race of humanoids to evolve naturally, so my guess is that hobbits had been around for a long time.

First mention is from much earlier than that, but I agree, they were most likely present in the SA too, just never detailed by Tolkien. Probably were too secluded and hidden, they're really good with hiding, natural born burglars
Since they were mainly discussed in relation with the Shire, the first mention is when they started to migrate from the Anduin, pressed by the growing darkness of Sauron (and when the woods nearby were renamed to Mirkwood), and that was about two thousand years before LotR...
Since people don't just pop out of nowhere with an established language, culture and population (especially not with Tolkien), it's safe to assume they were living in those parts for generations prior.
And, with those generations counted backwards, we're already near to the end of SA... that's why I posted Second Age doesn't automatically means no hobbits.

Is this really a world based on evolution? Because if memory serves, it's more about the races being "created" and seemingly in a more full form than an ape or whatever.
I think you guys are overthinking it.

Development did not hiccup at all .. Ill add that
Amazon pulling out did not necessarily kill it although there have been no new announcements from Athlon since April.
Athlon's home page is still a map of Middle Earth. Make of that what you will.
