After logging in and playing it, all I can say is that it is probably one of the worst ARPGs I've played in a very long time, and I've played through the entirety of Wolcen. The item shop is disgustingly overpriced, they have CLASSES in random chance loot boxes that you purchase for real money.
Absolutely embarrassing. Cryptic and Perfect World are both horrendously shitty companies and the product of their hard work is on full display here. Get ready to sift through twelve different currencies for different items, paid currencies, faction currencies, etc.
I honest to god do not understand how people can pick up a game like this and then spend 100s of dollars on it in loot boxes. Jesus Christ, go and buy Grim Dawn for a fraction of the price. It's 20 dollars on sale and that's usually with its expansions. That game is massive, has a ton of build options, fantastic itemization, etc.
Path of Exile 2, Diablo 3, virtually anything else out on the market is superior to this piece of garbage. It's got that trademark Cryptic quality though. By that, I mean it looks jank as all hell during cinematics with that same crap-looking art style that they tend to use in all their games. They're b-rate developers, and they prove it more and more with every new release.
Tried patching the game 5 times and i get stuck somewhere along the way.. i was hyped for this game but it looks like i won't be even playing it at how many complains i see...

It's not bad... It may not be Diablo 2 or 3, but you can't play those 2 games for the rest of your life.
It has a place. The gameplay is good. The upgrade system is a bit bizarre, and will take more time to flesh out. The monetization is still up-in-the-air, and could make or break the future of the game.
I downloaded it last night and then did some research on progression and monetization. I'm finding it hard to feel motivated to bother. I don't even care about Magic as an IP so there is literally nothing compelling me to start a game with such greedy and P2W monetization.
It would seem with a big IP like Magic it would be very hard to not score a win but apparently greed got in the way. Maybe use more tact and little more self control so the money grabbiness isn't so obvious?
I may try it one day if it's added to Steam.
Be careful all those dropping money on this game cause Magic recently cancelled the mobile game they had with NetMarble for not earning enough. Not saying it'll happen with this game but no one ever really knows what's going on behind the scenes and gamers always find out last.
The game is absolutely terrible, I had low hopes going in but yikes... RNG boxes for unlocking classes to top it all off. If I was gonna play a gambling game for characters I'd play Genshin Impact at least it looks pretty.
Reading everything on the Arc forums on the temperature on people's graphic cards going up alarmingly made me think twice and I have not yet launched the game and I might not at all after what I've read here.
Horrible optimization, but the bigger offender I think (and they did mention it in their preview so I can't be too mad about it) is your abilities being randomized after you use them. It gets annoying really really quick, so this will be a hard pass for me....
1 male class ? really ? Thumbs down so far.. poorly labeled character creation, it is so generic that I think cavemen built it. Unreal Cryptic would make this, but I feel this is more of a "client" being right then Cryptic being wrong.
Sometimes you just have those clients who want pink pokidots on a brown surface ...
The game has MTG IP so the player characters are knock off of the Jace Sentai, I mean, the Gatewatch.
Jace dresses like that because he is from a certain plane which has a certain culture, not because he is a blue plainswalker.
Colorless mana costs implies you can use other colors to pay for them, since you are a mono color (at least what I saw so far) thing spells having 3UU to cast makes literaly zero sense...
And if they are like that to promote MGT synergy with cards layout then why in the holy hell of Phyrexia aren't they using the actual MTG cards layout?! Thats, for me, was the most certain thing to be in the game.
ARPG with a sudo card builder (which is a high trending gameplay "genre" among indie titles) and it's not even good in either those things. Spells are uninspiring and everything pretty much sums up to "damage in line", "damage in area", "damage in line but blue".
MTG players know Wizard forgot what the color pie and color identity even means a long time ago (looks at poor white) but this is a whole new level.
When I first saw Mythic encounters (map bosses) and they had this unique model (kinda) following MTG cards art I thought "nice, that's neat"... just to find out seconds later the same model is used for pretty much every generic boss fight.
MTG ip has the power to be a great ongoing service, regardless the genre, due it's possibility to expand further into the lore reaching, literally, new planes...
But, to the ones unaware, Wizards now will make "Beyond" boxes an ongoing thing - printed cards in the MTG game, oficial and tournament legal, using other IPs such Warhammer, Lord of the Rings and the previously (disgusting) Walking Dead cards.
I don't mind funny wacky cards, but that's what silver borders are for!
And... It just shows "this is magic now *sigh*" is not a feeling tied solely to the card games. Hasbro is dressed in full dumb rich business man attire and ready to cash in MTG, no matter the cost - which in this case is tossing one of the most beloved universes from TCG into the fire pit to appease the Forgotten Money Gods, imprisioned deep within The Implicit Maze.
Come to think, why does Jace dress like that? And, yes, not all Blue Mages should be Jace copies. Venser is also mostly Blue, as is Tezzeret and look how different and unique those two are.
Colorless is here because you will be able to have up to two colors in your "deck". Why not 3, /shrug beats me.
White is ok. It still has very potent Wraths, Jails and flyers. Oh and most of First Strike. Lifelink and healing is just an added benefit for annoying garbage like Mill or Second Sun.
With that said, I would probably try this, but...PWE, I'm kinda wary because of that. And, imo, they should've just built a full RPG set in MTG. Why not? Someone's trials and tribulations on the path to become a Planeswalker. Add in a potential cataclysmic event and ... yeah, would be a perfect RPG!
But it all seems too half assed right now. Better lukk next time!
There's actually no gender locking, the bottom 3 body sizes are male the top 3 are female, although they really dont look much different. What's worse is that they dont have any zoom for the character creator.
As for monetization, the only thing I can recommend to people is just dont give these guys any money yet, because there is 0 bad luck protection. I guess they are figuring that since you can buy in-game power for real life money, then there doesn't need to be bad-luck protection for getting classes....but since the only way to get classes is via the lootbox system......really? Plays like a damn mobile game with a monetization scheme akin to a gacha game....

Let me elaborate a bit: the color pie discussion is a TCG side issue because in every format White is underplayed due it's lack of unique traits. And, don't even try me on that. White lost its meek aspect to green (and black), it's control to blue, it's flying to blue (and green), it's globals to black (and red) - removals, buffs, artifacts... you name it. White was supose to be the color of protection... yet green does it better. Life? Green (and black) does it better. Boros (red and white) is considered the worse color combination due lack of card advantage in eternal formats. That's not me saying, just to clarify, it's a consensus and a known problem withint Magic: The Gathering.
I saw people saying Dimir assassin (dimir is dual color) in loot boxes and such.
Jace dresses like that because his order from his plane dresses like that. Jace has an innate mind control power which helps him spark in his story (that is convoluted and touches too many places to sum up here).
Being plainswalker from the same color doesn't mean you are pals with others from the same color or you share their dress code. The reason for sparking are many is sometimes underwhelming. Plainswalkers don't go to school together, share fashion tips - on the contrary - they are diverse from literaly another dimensions, planets and cultures... So their design should reflect diversity.
Well, the post conflux era is a shitshow if you ask me. People lose and get sparks left and right more often than they change their undewear - and that's because MTG lore went into the same issue Comics are facing for a while: Too many writters doing their thing without a solid anchor to bring it all together.
And all reflects in things like this. Baffles me this was made. I see "cabal undead" minion dressed like Rakdos jugglers.
Saw Stepparu playing white one and I wanted to pierce my ears with a pencil when he started to 'ultimate' his spam attack.
How can an ARPG expect to succeed if basic stuff like animations and sound are not pleasant to experience?
I know, I heard what Prof has to say, but I don't fully agree. Why? Because there is always a Jeskai or an Abzan or an Esper, perhaps even Bant floating around top tiers of MTG. I'll agree that it should regain its portfolio and stop being the support color and a doormat. It should probably be the most control oriented color alongside Blue. And why? Idk, White(+Blue) write the rules and enforce them, ask them. If White doesn't want you to do something, it'll Wall / Heal up / Jail / Wrath / flicker block etc. You won't do what you want to do. White's often an authority, don't forget! But I agree that it has become entirely too diluted.

Hard pass.
