Pantheon now sells NFT's

KumaponKumapon Member EpicPosts: 1,605
Looks like Pantheon now has a new site selling NFT's. These are blockchain crypto art that you can collect.
I guess it's cool that they are thinking outside the box, but I think this is going a little bit too far.

The "First 5000 Days" NFT, sold for $69 million at a traditional art auction house (Christie's) just recently.

Anytime I read anything to do with this craziness of crypto currencies, I swear I hear an AI somewhere in the system laughing it's ass off....

This whole 'non-fungible token' thing sounds far more likely to leak away money than my comic book collection ever did.  At least the comic books people publish an annual Comics Price Guide, which gives you some idea about what you will need to pay to complete your collection.  It doesn't mention that a completed collection *might* not bring a price equal to single years Comics Price Guide, as you might only be able to get %25 of the 'book value'.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

NTF isn't really a crypto currency, think of it a jpeg that can never be altered due to cryptology (I know I am butchering it).

Now, if players could  make NTFs for pantheon and were sold by pantheon... and the player got a % of royalties.  That would be cool and generate a lot of news/traffic/excitement.

This is a core built in feature of NFTs, and why they are popular with artists.

Yes, their playerbase could do it for free and earn % royalties on sales.  Everyone wins.  What do I know, been in Marketing for over 20 years.... lol.

Ha! NFT's are such a scam.  The digital source is completely copyable but your token is worth more than 1 cent?  Sure, foolish person, you believe that.  There's an infinite number of copies but YOUR copy is special, even though binary identical.  Riiiiiight.

You're better off burning your money as fuel.  At least then it gives off some heat.
Such a ridiculous laughable attempt to get funding.

Just want to point out that there are reasons to make NFT's. Yes, in actuality, or at least in most cases, NFT's are artificial limitations on goods that generally have no necessity to be limited. For example when it comes to digital photography, the purpose of obtaining the actual NFT of something or a screenshot of it is functionally identical. Like the difference of a print of the Mona Lisa and the actual painting - in general you end up doing the same thing with either... you look at it. While the actual painting has far more value, most of us are content not owning the original.

NFT's can go deeper, and they might in the future, I mean, you have to start somewhere, but the way Pantheon is doing it? It doesn't really make sense. What's the purpose of ownership of certain unused assets or concept art for a game that isn't finished?

I think there is a purpose for most of what the crypto-age has brought to the table, but non fungible tokens as they're used in many situations seem to be utilized as more of a "proof of concept" approach rather than finding a true, functional purpose. Mostly because the greater population at large doesn't understand them, nor would they care much if they did.

You could say the collecting of most things are a "scam" or overblown if copies can be made... I wouldn't, because I value history and originality.

Toy Story was the first full length computer animated movie in history.  What if I owned all the original computer files?  Including the drafts and final product.  (Yes I know there were scripts and storyboards... but I'm just talking the files).

Years from now, as art, I bet I could sell them for a fortune to collectors.

NFT would allow me to certify original work.

Just imagine what would happen if Valve got the idea to bring back paying for Steam workshop mods in the form of NFTs?

They're just offering artwork as a means to support the development.  I don't see anything weird or wrong about it.  What am I missing?
