Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

As the whether Black Desert Online is worth playing, it's not a particularly good game but not particularly bad either. If you're looking for a good game in some genre, there are better alternatives. But if you're looking for MMO specifically, then I'd say it's worth testing out.

IT was fun for about a month....The grind after 58 is incredibly boring.
However if you enjoy trading and building up a worker empire and getting the best price for your goods and travelling to far off places with your wagon to deliver said goods you will be quite happy with this game. You can strategize your resource gathering and depending on the market make a lot of money. You can breed horses and if you get a good one you can sell it. You can grow crops and fish.
Because of the rng in the way gear is upgraded it takes an insane amount of money to upgrade your gear. Many just RMT it.
So a 99 cent price point is actually a disincentive in my case, but I'm definitely not the typical game consumer.
See, this is another thing I can't do. Knowing there is a big "failure" point on the horizon means I see no reason to play it at all, just to experience some content until I hit it.
It's why I gave up on MMORPGs for the most part, especially if they had clear paths to raiding and or gear grinding end games, all seemed so pointless.
I guess with games like EVE there was no clear path or direction so I never could see when the fun might end, hence playing it for 10 years.

I did like the 'load random character design', which brought in other players character designs for perusal. Occasional surprising looks via that.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
For .99 I think tis worth it.....Yes you will hit a leveling wall but like others have said there are other things to do and you may really enjoy those aspects of the game.....IF some other popular MMO came down in price to .99 I would take a look at it too even if it had weaknesses like most of them do.
Yes, the latter 2 packages (Master/Legendary) also had other items like bag slots, pets of some kind, a "special" outfit, and pearls.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
Good write up BTW, thanks for sharing.
I had a similar experience back at launch, just didn't catch my interest during a one week free trial someone shared with me.

I grew crops and traded, fished and opened new nodes. That game has loads to do aside from from combat and progression in terms of level and the world is truly beautiful. I loved my time in the game and unlike Archeage I could leave for days and not worry that my plants and animals would die.
I did fishing for a bit...Explored for a bit...Sent some caravans for a bit...none of it grabbed me.....The selling point of this game was the graphics and that was about it....it appealed to those that hate the old school graphics....To me, it was like the pretty girl that has zero personality or charm.
I think 99 cents a reasonable amount to risk on forming your own impressions of the game. So, why don't you splurge and find out for yourself?
It's b2p. Subscription is available but optional.
Just curious here, but what am I missing. Is it because I'm playing the remastered version. Is that a different version then you are playing?
Level 25 in 2 hours not even rushing either. Going by how much UI they still had to go in tutorial main quest, I am sure I was less than half way, I just got a free pet, so another few hours of questing I am level 40? Where is the fun you are talking about level 40-50?
Seems I am missing something here. I have like 40 skill points before even figuring how where to put them.
Is it possible you are just having nostalgia for what the game used to be, and not what it is now? Specifically referencing 1-50.
I had assumed the initial interest already established, though it never hurts to research. Ultimately one must personally spend the time regardless to know if a game suits.
