Did they fix the combat yet? Because when I played a couple years ago, even though I am a die hard FF fan, the combat was insanely boring. Not sure how it's that popular.
As a 1.0 player back when the game had action combat, and as a returning player in Stormblood after swearing of all auto-attack MMORPGs.. the combat of FFXIV is by far the worst part of the game.
You play it for the story first, social aspect second, and combat third. Which is funny because many people say the raiding is the best in the industry.
I'm a vet of the game at this point, but nothing will get you to overcome the leveling combat feeling (especially as expansions further dumb down the game). Only at 50+ does it start to pickup, or earlier if playing certain jobs (notably Monk). The 2.5s GCD is what makes it feel so poor, along with the server latency on registering your character's position (there's actual built-in delay for some godforsaken reason). So not only is it slow, it also feels laggy, especially when players interact with other players (ie; healer's pull).
But if you're someone who actually plays games for their story, you can get passed the combat, because there's so much damn story and it's treated mostly like a single player RPG; y'know, a Final Fantasy game.
However if you're just there for the gameplay (raiding) and are coming from faster games like WoW or SWTOR, then I have to say you probably shouldn't look at the game, because you're throwing away most of what it was designed for along with most likely being turned off by the slower paced combat.
Regardless; game has a free trial to level 60 now (vs 35), so you get to experience a LOT more than before and see if you can eventually adapt to it. You've got nothing to lose, really.
How do you run out of digital stock ? Sorry but this is just them manipulating the hype by limiting supply,
Either that or SE is just horrible at designing any system
Same thing for them running out of "spots" in the servers. They don't know how to do layering properly and don't have a lot of servers to begin with
Grind fest??? lol FFXIV is not a grind you legit can get max level just following the main story quest chain, which you should. It's a entertaining relaxing game. Good on YoshiP for caring about the game and listening to the player base even if you don't like FFXIV or you're a die hard WoW fanboi, at least respect that these Devs actually give two shits about their product.
Lineage 2, Aion, These are grind fest.
This is the first time I ever heard of a company limiting digital sales. Are they not able to expand their servers? I am thinking maybe they are using 3rd party or just don't want the expense. They could just change how housing is done (instanced) and free up some server space that way, but w/e.
They are really weird and anal about avoiding complaints over performance, but I'm sure they will scale up if needed. Most likely it will work itself out once the 14 day vet trial ends.
Why the hell is this game so popular? It's a tab target grind fest just all WoW, for real I need someone to ELI5 this to me.
* Large existing Final Fantasy fanbase
* One of the last AAA MMORPGs to be released, so there isn't exactly much choice
* Many prefer tab-target strategic combat to action combat
* Tons of content
There are a lot more reasons for it's initial success, but it's enduring success is really down to a lack of competition. FF14 was the last AAA tab-target MMORPG to be released. Literally hasn't been another one since then. So, if you're a fan of that style of game, what the hell else are you gonna play?

BTW, for anyone interested in the original topic, the halting of digital sales only happened for a few hours and they were available again yesterday afternoon.

Welcome to the world new hatchling. You do realize FFXIV sells mostly outside of Steam and is also on PS4 right? and lol @ comparing SOLO to ffxiv; I just can't with some of you. xD
It was already a very very popular game and will continue to be when he decides to leave. But ya know, sheep gotta be sheep and follow.
Yep, the servers were bursting with activity before the Shadowbringers launch, to the point where SE had to halt digital sales because the servers were so packed, and it didn't need some Warcraft streamers to achieve that.

About once every three months I get tempted to buy FF14 and get stuck in. But, I recognise that this is purely due to a lack of options rather than any genuine desire to play the game.
I'm happy to see the game still doing well. Whilst its not really the game for me, I still respect SE's approach to development and community relations. They seem to have done right by their community.

Probably a valid server reason.
