Pretty sure this is the game I got called a racist for saying would be trash, as I think most Asian MMOs are just cheap, grindy trash.

Or, maybe it was Bless, the first time it released. I don't know, they all look the same.

Enjoy SOLO while you can, it's next. Not that the target audience for these games will really care. They'll be getting hyped up over the next old, failed, trash Asian MMO being brought to the west.

First off this isn't Sword of Legends online.

Also, Asian games are far from trash. They might not have the game play you like, but the level of detail put into their avatars and worlds wail upon most everything western mmorpg's have. It's downright embarrassing.

The problem, in my opinion, with Eastern games is that they are made to make money. And once they stop making money they close them down.

But games like Black Desert, or Aion or Sword of Legends Online are not trash. They are very well done but have, to some western audiences, questionable game play.

I'll also say that I'd rather have a grindy game than a run to ! and run to ! and run to ! and get reward game.

I can't say that this new Bless is good. I didn't really like the old Bless. But I don't go lumping all games together just because a few aren't to my taste.

I won't say you're a racist but you are very short sighted and pretty much don't really think things through.
All one has to do is look at the history of these games being ported to the West and make an educated guess on how well it will be doing a few years out from launch.

Of course, many Asian games are doing well, and it's because they actually put in the effort into translation and making changes that the Western audience wants. The majority however, do not do well. They're ported quickly, cheaply and with little to any regard for what makes a game successful in the West.

Maybe SOLO is different. But, when I hear parts of the game haven't even been properly translated, or translated at all, well... I'll go ahead and make my my short sighted call that we'll be seeing a very similar thread about SOLO in a few years.

I would never dispute that these games don't have issues. Like many games. I would even go so far as to say (regarding Sword of Legends) that the entire start is horrible to my tastes, especially for making alts, but it's still very well put together.

I wasn't kidding when I said that the attention to detail with the characters and the worlds puts most western games to shame. Especially with creating characters. WTF is wrong with the west?

I mean, here we have Sword of the New World on the horizon and while the world (such as it is) is beautiful, I can't see one way to make a decent character.

Like I said, these asian games are put together to ultimately make money and with our western sensibilities it feels a bit cynical.

I can definitely agree that a lot of work and attention to detail is put into many of these Asian games so "lazy cash grabs" they are not.

You bring up character creation and there is no question that Asian MMOs have a standard of options, choices, sliders and details that the Western MMOs just don't even come close to matching.

And it's not just the new ones. I fired up the FF ARR free trial and its character creator although not as modern looking as some of the more recent Asian MMOs still had more to it then than what any Western MMO has in 2021.

One problem for me though is that the Asian ones are absolutely obsessed with youth and cuteness to the point that almost none of them, including FF ARR, let you create a mature looking character. I sarcastically often describe them as having the possibility of making literally millions of distinct looking teenage supermodels.

I'm not just saying that because I'm old and want to create a character resembling me. I have always leaned towards creating magic users, which happen to be my main in every MMO I play, patterned after the Gandalf, older wise person model. I felt exactly the same way when I was young myself.

You brought up the pathetically limited New World character creator. Fair enough. Even by Western MMO character creation standards it's extremely limited.

And yet, in seconds, I was able to have a Gandalf look alike with suitably craggy face and long grey hair and beard.

In the vast majority of Asian MMOs you can spend hours on their super detailed creators and never achieve that. BDO is actually the only Asian MMO with an over-the-top character creator where I can easily do that but that's just because they decided to use Gandalf as the default model for the Wizard:

So although I can recognize their effort and excellence in the detail of their character creators, it is typically wasted effort for me because I'm forced to play as a teenage supermodel anyway.

And also IMO, that is just the beginning of another stark difference between Western and Asian MMOs. The Asian ones also go for over the top cuteness in environments, NPCs and the ubiquitous child-like races or just plain children they all seem to feature prominently.

In those MMOs I feel assaulted by cuteness, and I do mean assaulted, because to my taste a little bit of that in very small doses is OK, but overdoing it, or making the game play loop all about it, is something I find nauseating in an RPG. They make me feel like I've stumbled into a Facebook game aimed at 8 year olds.

So yeah, Ironically the piss-poor, low-effort, primitive New World Character creator met my needs for cloning Gandalf when 99% of Asian MMOs with their superb, high effort character creators can't.

    You're not wrong.

I've mentioned this before, but a past girlfriend of mine is Japanese. She once told me that in Japan, it's better to be thought of as "cute" than beautiful.

Youth and "cute" are very valued in Japan and I suspect in some other East Asian cultures by the looks of it.

So yeah, looking to make an "older" character, a wizened character, doesn't seem to be in the cards for their developers. Which I think is a huge shame.

But they never ask my opinion so nuts to them!

Whats the point of playing (the event) the game if they are just going to shut it down...

Enjoyment, I expect, for those that liked the game. Some could also be striving to get something completed before the game was gone entirely.

My girl and I did that with City of Heroes, from the closure announcement right up to the bitter end, all the time believing once it shut down it would be gone forever.

Nah he is right. Majority of eastern MMOs are garbage with one or two exceptions. They all look the same and play the same. Nothing racist about it just facts.
Ah the old "my opinion=fact" routine. Been some time, I missed it. :)

At least one can rely on it's inevitable return.

Astellia wasn’t very good, still sad to see another MMORPG bite the dust. Contrary to the last five years though, we now have several new MMORPGs to look forward to/play right now.

The game was never good. I tried it at first with an open mind and I made a Warrior.

    What did I find?!

The sword and the shield are considered a single weapon that goes in one slot!!!

This kind of cheap bullshit is the kind that turns me away.

It was OK for cheap F2P Korean MMOs from like 2004 until 2009, but after that, it's inexcusable. They just focus on graphics and the game mechanics are the same archaic bullshit from like 17 years ago.

It's unbelievable that this is happening, but certainly not unbelievable that it's shutting down.

Monster Hunter:World does that and is considered top class in its genre. I am sure there must have been lots of reasons Astellia was considered subpar and shuts down but that's not it.
I don't know. I don't play Monster Hunter, never have, never will. I tried Dauntless at launch, but when I found out it's just about hunting giant monsters, I quickly lost interest and quit. The concept is not my cup of tea so I wasn't able to see the good sides of those games.

But in an MMORPG, there is absolutely no reason not to have a sword and a shield as separate items in their own gear slots. It opens a lot more room for customization, and in real life a sword and a shield aren't bound together so you can't interchange with a different sword or a shield.

As I said, I haven't played Monster Hunter, but in my opinion it works like that, because gear and customization are not the main focus of the game, but an afterthought.
