The combat has bored me to tears now .. cannot take much more
Well, its not for everyone.
Luckily you can still go back to tab targeting wow or FFXIV.
ROFL, the combat in FF14 and the rotations are way more complicated than this game. There is like no depth to these weapons. NW will be a ghost town in a month maybe less. They have have lost almost 300k concurrent players this week.
This game needs an entire rework from the ground up. It's a promising alpha at best.
TEH GAMe is goinG TO BANK RUPT TEH AMAOZN AND JEFF WON"T be aBLE to t FLY HIS ROCKET Anymores.
The mindset that glories in the failure of other people's efforts is very petty.
Players keep talking about the simplicity of the combat, that's not going away and would take a major overhaul to fix. Maybe what they have is good enough, but only time will confirm that.
Have you read through the skills on some of the weapons and how stacking/timing things can have a big impact on play? I get a headache going through all that and it is already more complicated that I want...
As a healer doing 3 heavy attacks buffs my healing by 30% (10% each, stacking 3 times for 10s) and roll dodging buffs it by another 20% for 5s. My light attacks are also modified by a passive that heals friendlies near my target and another passive makes it so that they reduce the cooldowns on my skills. And oh yeah, my heavy attacks also remove a debuff from each friendly they pass through thanks to another passive.
My single target big heal heals the target by 30% more for each buff they have on them and my own buffs contribute 10% more per buff to me healing.
So yeah, there's quite a bit to a lot of those skills when you look at the passives you can take and then do what's required to take advantage of it.
Agreed. The strategy comes from the way you select your weapon skills (both active and passive) and spec your attribute points and the gear you wear and the gems you use and the food you eat, ect.... In development you look at ways to build strategy and engage the player. This way is one way which is a vertical character strategy layering the strategy on the character instead of a traditional tab-target system which puts the focus on hotbar filling to create strategy. tab-target is usually a horizonal strategy that is not character based but usually class based.
I actually liked the ESO character development with its mix of class and non-class based skill selection - many of those weapon based - and 12 skills instead of the NW 6.
As a matter of fact during my first exposure to NW in the summer of '20, while I was still playing ESO, one of my biggest knocks against NW was that I saw the 100% weapon based advancement with no innate, personal, class or otherwise, skills as lacking.
It took me a while and enough leveling in NW to come to appreciate the depth that it does have. It's very different than most other MMOs I've played but there is depth and variety there.

112 hours, and still can't wait to log back in to continue playing. I was waiting for something like this since UO and AC1.
Like what? This game is nothing like UO.
Like : I don't care about the opinion of people like you who come shit on an otherwise positive thread and think their opinion is fact.
That's it
Cool, so it's not and you're full of crap. Got it...uo is nothing like new world, and the only reply you had was you being a douche. Sorry if my opinion hurt your feelings about a video game.
Loved EQ Classic and hates that carebears had it changed.

Both of you are acting a bit menstrual over it lol. You have a difference of opinion, it's OK, the world will keep turning xD
This game I feel is probably more enjoyable if one PvPs. I feel that the structure and base of it was always designed for that and if one does not PvP one is missing out.
A bit. You miss out on the zone ownership / defense / attack drama but it's very playable without that.
The PvP is more attached to the game here than in say a game like ESO where PvP is also optional and if you don't, well you "miss out" on that. But ESO's PvP has no impact on the PvE and NW does some.
But the NW impact has to do with buffs to fast travel cost, gathering yields, house cost and taxes, etc. but the buffs are not so huge that you're "crippled" if you don't get the benefits.
It IS a 3 faction world though and even if you do 0 PvP and have no involvement in the territory control game you still get some of those buffs when playing in the territories controlled by your faction whether you participate in the PvP part or not.

Don't forget I am just picking up impressions from what you guys say, I think I have watched three NW videos is total. Combat as an issue has not been mentioned as much as say questing, so I don't see it as a must resolve asap issue.
Indeed what we may be getting here from posters is the standard "this is not as good as an action game" response about non-tab target combat in MMOs. Is there a solution for that, I would like to think there is but I have yet to play a MMORPG where the "action combat" is great.
Hahaha... come on now. This game is a mish mosh haphazardly thrown together that lacks an identity. Calling this game perfect is straight up shilling. The pvp is mostly pointless and the pve is terrible compared to most themepark games, which new world is in the direction of trying to become, sort of. The action combat is clunky. It brings nothing new to the table and only exists in the form that it does, because amazon is trying to cater to the least common denominator type of casual player to profit as much as possible. There is 0 integrity put in the creative design of this game, and amazon is fully aware of it, but they don't care because they knew they could feed you this crap and you'd eat it anyway.
I give it another week and the honeymoon phase will wear off. Like every other MMO release in recent years, NW has it's in denial simps.

I just didn't want to bother to answer to someone who is obviously just here to bash the game, and also obviously didn't even play it that much, if at all. But I'll bite.
The SKILL BASED character development WITHOUT CLASSES is definitely similar to UO and AC1, and permits a huge freedom in being exactly the character you want to be.
Also, the sentence you were answering to is:
"I was waiting for something like this since UO and AC1."
I never said this game was UO2 or something like that. Just that I was waiting for such a game since UO and AC1.
I will also remind the reader of your supposed "review" here:
"Hahaha... come on now. This game is a mish mosh haphazardly thrown

Arrogant, insulting, and with no real argument except "this game is crap".
If there's one douche in this thread, it's not me. And now I will not answer any further to your sad comments, because I don't want to pollute this otherwise nice thread any more.
Have a nice day and enjoy your stay in whatever game fits your tastes more, and hopefully keeping you away from these forums in the process.
Ive been playing UO , All these 25 years and continue today (just got 24 year rewards )
NW reminds of UO in NO way at all 0 , Zilch , Nada .
UO risk/reward in PvE and PvP is extremely more prevelant. NO risk/reward feel in NW .. Death is dam meaningless..
UO has much more challenging and varied combat in both PvE and PvP ..
UO has lets see for ex on my main i have 18 skills on my hotbar and 3 bows that i carry and switch between an additional situational skills ..for 22 skills at any given moment
My mage in UO has 64 skills at there finger tips at any given moment..
A Mage/Druid has 84 for ex..
Mage/Necro .. 84
Now mix in Spellweaving and a Cleric book could have 100 skills ...
Melee skill / Paladin Skills / Range Skills/Taming/Bard .. there is well over 100 in combat with spells for build options .. Thats what Freedom is at any given moment .. not
SIX
NW has 6 .. yes 6 at any given moment.. and the combat is very easy to manage .. There is little challenge in PVE at all even 8+ levels above you .. Even you were boasting of how easily you were handling mobs in that level range ..
The number of mobs and varied encounters in UO dwarfs NW its not even comparable..
Crafting is not even comparable UO is light years ahead ..
As is gathering ... with all the ways to interact with node enviroments .. No such interaction exist in NW ..
UO is an actual true Sandbox..
NW is a gated Themepark ..
And please stop with ohh but passives .. Lol most every game has passives and NW is lacking in this area also with very few per tree , and Spongebob Squarepants could pick out the useful ones on any given tree and avoid the useless..
Passives do not make NW any more challenging or complex ..
NW has the foundation to build on but is basically a BETA at this stage .. and has a long way to go to becoming even remotely resembling UO , if it ever can .. Which i would doubt highly ..
They are very different games ..
They are both PC games .. the comparison stops there..
They are both PC games .. the comparison stops there..
Tigers and house cats are both felines, and there are comparisons which can be made regarding their similarities.
Both are carnivores, can swim but don't care for it much, purr, have sharp claws and pointed teeth, are covered in fur, have tails, and can even be friendly with humans.
Their differences are largely a matter of scale between the two, except that as far as I've seen tigers can be trained to do tricks, house cats not so much.
Pretty sure that my house cats would try to kill me just like tigers sometimes do to their owners, but I'm kept safe being the only one between us who can open the little cans of cat food and can give awesome neck scritches.
So same with the comparison between UO and NW, as an outsider to both games I can see the similarities and note there is a significant difference in things like the amount of skills which are more a matter of scale than anything else far as I can tell.
If a character can have 83 skills I'd be very surprised if many were actually of much use on a regular basis, but I could be wrong not having played either.
Regardless, both games do not force a player to choose a class, use a particular weapon set or slot specific skills every time, which seems much like UO, but again at a much smaller scale.
While you may love UO and the many complexities it offered, playing it sort of damaged you just as EQ1, SWG and other early MMORPGS did to other early players, especially if they were one of their first games.
Those folks spend their lives searching for a better version of their first love which is unlikely to ever happen again.
I was that way with DAOC for the longest time, kept returning to it for years on both corporate and free shard servers, but finally learned to let it go.

Yes, the open skill based character development is akin to UO and AC1.

Since UO and AC1, there has been NO mainstream AAA MMORPG using that precise classless model.
Beyond that, be it if it's better or not, is a matter of opinion, and on that I don't deny your right to agree or disagree.
PS: beside that, I was in UO beta. Comparing UO now with UO back then is stupid. If you weren't there, you don't have an idea of how bland UO was back then. Yet it was still awesome in its time.
I remember UO back at launch, won Computer Gaming World's "(drink) Coaster of the Year" award two years in a row pissing off RG so much he had his developers add a Johnny Wilson "blob" npc into the game.
While the game had it's fans, it's detractors were legion back in the day and one reason why other titles with different designs were launched and thrived in many ways far beyond UO.

In every game, when I wield a sword I'm melee, If the sword shoots a flame and hits a target a hundred feet away. Its ranged, or.... is it magic? you take your pick
Games are supposed to be entertaining. It doesn't matter how many spells, skills, systems, etc. etc. there is in a game, if people don't find it entertaining it will fall flat. It could be the very best combat system ever designed for a MMORPG and the game could fall flat on its face because the combat might be boring to the hard majority of your market.
How many spells and skills in a game does the player base actually use? The remainder is all bloat and wasted resources. edit: I would just like to add that this is also *balance*

Can you not be any of those things in UO?
In UO back in 1997 I wanted to be a tank. I geared myself to be one, decked myself right out. The thing that made me quit the game in the end is that it was archery/mage or fodder.
Funny thing is me and 4 other guys played on release day. After the first 60 days I was the only one left lol.
I lasted 3 years.
I would love to see a UO2 based on the original ideas with just a little better execution
I say that lightheartedly. I loved UO and we all have learned so much since then.
You most likely made the same mistake many early Tank wanna-bes made and
that was ignore or lack of Magic Resist , was there biggest problem ..
Many also did not max Lumberjacking ..
All things that were learned as time went on ..
My
group had a Tank and it took a good year or longer for us to figure out
what was best at the time .. Which was Halberd/MR/Lumberjacking/
Tactics/Sword/Arms Lore/Anatomy ..In GM hvy Plate ..and GM Weapon for
the Arms LOre bonuses .. For our 5 man it worked great ..
Things have changed alot over the years now Sword and Shield are really well done with Bushido /Parry

They detected issues along the way and tried to resolve them? Or was all that balance in on release?
A lot changed when I played too including PVE servers. That's how they dealt with the imbalance when I played.
Glad to hear its improved over time. Sad that they haven't done anything grander with the IP in all these years *like giving NW a run for its money and I mean that sincerely *

Ya know i agree with ya i wish they had to , a UO that looked like NW would be perfect for me ..
But , i dont see it happeneing , that being said they have added sooo much to UO , so many improvemnets you most likely would not recognize most systems ..
And imo still the best MMORPG virtual world we have .. so its home for me ..
I am looking forward to the new Legacy servers coming son .. should be great ..

Loved EQ Classic and hates that carebears had it changed.
Both of you are acting a bit menstrual over it lol. You have a difference of opinion, it's OK, the world will keep turning xD

Indeed what we may be getting here from posters is the standard "this is not as good as an action game" response about non-tab target combat in MMOs. Is there a solution for that, I would like to think there is but I have yet to play a MMORPG where the "action combat" is great.
Perhaps it's time for you to do the same?
Cheers.

While the game had it's fans, it's detractors were legion back in the day and one reason why other titles with different designs were launched and thrived in many ways far beyond UO.
