Just because Amazon is a huge company does not mean they are smarter than anyone else. Maybe we are expecting too much, this is their first MMO.

One of my favorite examples of this is the Motorola Iridium project. Back in the late '90's, Motorola decided to launch a satellite-based phone service. Cell phones were brand new and not very common, and this new system didn't require being in range of a tower.

They launched over 60 satellites! And then went bust. They had predicted 500,000 subscribers, but got only 10,000. And lost over FIVE BILLION DOLLARS. That's even more money than Star Citizen has raised!

    Big does not mean smart.
The Iridium system was taken over by the military, and in the fighting in Iraq and Afganistan, it was the best communication system they had.  Every unit wanted an Iridium phone.   So the system worked, and worked well.  They just didn't have the right sales target.

Or else it was lacking the cool marketing videos and ship sales, maybe.

The story inside Motorola at the time was that a VP finally took a look at it. It was the size of a shoebox, didn't work inside buildings, and cost thousands of dollars each. Connection fees were also very high, on the order of dollars per minute. The question was why did they let it go on for so long?

So commercially, it was a flop. But I could see the military using it. Profit is not their #1 goal.

I was on another project there that involved design centers in the US, England, and Germany. After hundreds of employees worked on it for 2-3 years, they canceled it. We estimated an $800 million loss.

Ouch, that does sound bad for Iridium's commercial qualities.  After action reports on the invasion of Iraq showed a hodge podge of communications systems, with all sorts of issues.  Iridium was the most reliable one, with the least issues.

Hopefully, in New World, they will organize their response to issues and get better communication about them.  As it is the first big game they've gotten out the door, they need to have it show well, even at the cost of short term profits on it.  If it goes well long term, the profit is assured.  If they screw up things early, and it fades, then profit and reputation go out the door too.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

I think the problem was that it was far too expensive. I can’t remember offhand what the cost was but I remember thinking that they were nuts.

How do gold sellers get away with it for so long?
Going by Reddit threads people are getting booted a lot more often when standing stationary at the Trader or when fishing. The complaints about that are ramping up. Dealing with bots and cheaters while not affecting everyone else playing by the rules is a tricky situation.
The gold seller was advertising in /Area.
He was doing it for about an hour.

At $4 per 1,000 coins he'd have to sell at least 10 times to make up for an account ban, I would think.  Unless he's advertising on a hacked account...
Gold spammers typically buy games with stolen credit cards.  That's one of the reasons why game developers and publishers hate them so much:  they don't just annoy your real customers, but also make you deal with a bunch of chargebacks.

Even worse if this is not auto-ban cause then it means their team is just pressing that Accept button without proper review of reports.

I'm actually amazed how many people haven't thought it through that far.

So you are saying Amazon's moderators are either lazy or inept, same as their development team is often accused of being.

Does make sense when you put it that way, well, at least they are consistent.

Which development team isn't accused of being inept?

Minimum wage temporary workers inept? Where did you get that idea?

It's not necessarily about laziness or ineptitude.  It could easily be about how much time they're typically given to make a decision before deciding to ban someone or not.  If you take the time to investigate and make the right decision in each case, then maybe you'll only handle 1/3 as many complaints as come in each day, in which case, even the most blatant cheating gets ignored for weeks before you get to it.  Online game moderation would hardly be the only job in the world that is done badly because there aren't enough employees available to handle the workload well.

People in a lot of jobs like this are evaluated on several metrics, but always one of the key ones is how many issues they can clear in the least amount of time.

My wife had such a job where she regularly got dinged for spending too much time helping her customers despite her management regularly receiving unsolicited testimonials from the same folks for her caring and concern.

It's a fine line she got tired of walking which eventually led to her decision to retire a bit early rather than keep putting up with mgnts shit.

We do not auto-ban based on player reports. All player reports are reviewed by hand by our teams before any action is taken against a player
